Sneak peek: Mazda RX-7

"Power for the new RX-7 will come from a reworked version of the RX-8's compact 2,6-litre Renesis rotary engine. With wider rotor chambers and other detail changes to stiffen the block and enhance cooling, the rotary unit is being bumped up to around 3,2-litres and should also boast a higher redline for better performance"

I hope that picture isn't accurate... the colour and the mags make it one ugly car compared to the '8.

Question Bolt Up?

Umm....wonder if that engine would bolt up to the RX-8 when it is released?

If it does that would be a awesome aftermarket for us RX-8 owners.

Hehehe 300hp RX-8 Zooom Zooom

Relax Gentlemen,
Those of you who followed the RX-8 since it was just a concept should remember that the concept model and the final 8 model look completely different. The current version looks 10x better than the concept. Even the RX-8 prototype they demo'ed at the Tokyo AutoShow was not even close to the our production model in terms of styling. (the prototype look far less agressive and looks very boring complete to the final version)

I'm pretty confident that Mazda will make sure that next RX-7 will be the prettiest RX-7 yet.

How did that article come up with 2.6L size for the Renesis Engine? Did they compute it as 2 Rotors x 1.3L = 2.6L?

If thats the case, we can extrapolate that the new RX-7 will have a 1.6L engine... is that correct?

The Renesis displacement IS 2.6L when moving.

If I was confused before...now its worse.

Please exlpain why there is a difference between an engine displacement while stopped & while in motion.

The manual specifies the Renesis as a 1.3L engine...0.6? Litres per rotor.

So how in hell they came up with 2.6L for the Renesis...that would be a friggin' 4 rotor wankel (0.6? L X 4)

:D

Journalist's magic!! they can make the stupidest statement sound serious (just like me)

as far as the reason it is classed as a 2.5-3.0l motor...

....Traditional swept volume measurements are confused when tackling rotary engines. A rotary engine has three chambers created by the gap between the rotor itself and the rotor housing, as opposed to a the chamber between the head and piston in a reciprocating engine. The motion of the rotor moves the chamber itself (with the mixture contained in the chamber) from the inlet port, compresses the mixture, moves the chamber in line with the spark plugs to ignite the mixture, then moves the mix to an exhaust port... there are three chambers doing this constantly. So it's a very different process to a traditional reciprocating engine. That said, in motorsport and as far as many government bodies are concerned, a rotary engine in displacement is consider to be the equivalent of a reciprocating engine of double the capacity. In this case, RX7s are generally consider to be the equivalent of a 2.6 litre piston motor. On a four stroke there's only one intake stroke for every two revolutions, so from a breathing standpoint, displacement is how much combustion chamber volume gets sucked in over two revolutions. for a rotary, with one intake stroke per revolution, that means measuring two combustion chambers per rotor, not one, like mazda says. each chamber in a 13b displaces 654cc, so by mazda's two-stroke method, a 13b is 1308cc.

i hope my cut and paste from the internet helps.

I see fit to point out "...is considered to be the equivalent..."

Doesn't quite cut it when we start fiddling around with standards....A Renesis will still be a 1.3L (1308cc) engine...for me at least.

According to the quote above, the Renesis is in fact a...[suspense]...3,924 cc (4 Litre) engine ??

654cc * 3 combustion chambers * 2 rotors = 3,924cc

or

654cc (per rotor housing) * 2 = 1,308cc

or....maybe I should shoot myself.

ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

The persons doing the "consideration" include the FIA - for racing purposes, a 13B engine is classed as a 2.6. The new RX-7's 15B or 16B would be classed as a 3.0 or 3.2 litre engine. Even the Engine of the Year committee (which awarded the Renesis 13B engine top honours) placed the 13B in the 2.5-3.0 category).

Regards,
Gordon

From the logic of that article we need to go out and double the displacements for all 2-stroke engines too. Stupid.
