Solstice wins Red Bull Drifting World Championship

I know most of you guys don't care for drifting, but I just wanted to pointed out that Rhys Millen Racing and his Solstice won the Red Bull Drifting World Championship.

http://www.autoblog.com/2008/11/17/r...ng-world-cham/

Gathering at the Port of Long Beach were the top drivers that compete from Formula DRIFT, D1GP, D1 New Zealand, DMCC, Drift Australia, EDC, FD Singapore, IDS, Nordic Drift, New Zealand Drift, and Pro Drift. This was a battle of the champions and Formula DRIFT 2005 champion Millen came out on top.

The event was held at a special venue on the Port of Long Beach that featured a purpose built drifting track that was highlighted by a very fast entry and 6 technical turns. Event winner Millen set the speed bar high by also claiming the highest entry speed of the event with a speed of 103.7 miles per hour during the finals. The track proved to be challenging with many drivers falling victim to the walls and barricades and other drivers stepping up to show off their total car control.

Are they ever going to have drifting on a circuit track? I know dirt track racing has the outlaws which drift in one direction and usually on a small oval, I think it would be cool to have 8-10 cars racing on a circuit track , drifting on every turn, for the cars that don't drift around the corners, they get penalized by having a few point shaved off there total score for the season or per race.

I am sure the tire industry could make a tire strong enought to last 2-3 laps of grueling tire spinning at insane speeds. Would be cool to see cars drifting at tripple digit speeds! I know....to much Ridge Racer on the brain.

Rumor has it that in a JGTC race, one of the drivers was so far ahead that he started drifting the corners. That is how drifting came out of the Japanese mountains and into public view. The last event at Las Vegas had the cars approaching triple digits at one point on the course. An actual drift race would be impossible. A race is a contest of speed and drifting isn't the fastest way around a corner. That is why drifting is a judged and racing is a timed competition.

Is Sam Hubinette to drive that Challenger next year?

hmm JGTC started in 94. My oldest cousin (masaki) who is 43 now was drifting back in 87, with his first gen rx7. Then my uncle (hiro) father of my cousin was drifting back in the 70's with this 1971 RED GTR hakosuka (which he still has) . from what my mother told me while i was growing up. so i think drifting has been out over 30 years now. I jsut know i did it from 93-97 before moving to US.

but it would be cool to see a 8 car on a track. certain corners would be for drifting (with no overtake allowed) then the other turns would be used for overtaking along with t he straights. but as for how many laps can be done with those tires and before car over heat is my only question. Over heating would be a big problem for the non piston cars. I can only get 5 sessions going up moutain and down in my fc. whre my friends who drove s13 at the time can get at least 7-8 sessions before parking the car to cool down.

That was Tsuchiya Keiichi that drifted the race. That's how he made it popular.

I agree that what has now transformed into 'drifting' has been around for a while. When I was in Japan from 86-90, there were several racers who ran in the hills, expressways, and mountain roads in Northern Japan (Tohoku Region). I was one of three 'gai jin' to hook up with a group of J-cats during this particular time. There were Datsun Fairlady Zs, Toyotas, a few 1st gen RX-7s (my roomate had one), and some Skylines - my first RHD, stick car. I sucked bad until I got the hang of it! Dudes with money showed up with new FCs, 180's, and Toyota Soarers - which looked wicked sharp back then. Funny thing is everyone back then called it "sliding". What we did was a combination of rally, time attack, and plain ol' street racing - sliding the car around turns was just a part of it and it usually scared the **** out of us until we kinda figured out how to 'control' it so we wouldn't spin out or worse.

I can definitely vouch for the fact that it was going on before I was there.
