I don't really understand how confidence from the general public fits in with aftermarket turbos though, they're inevitable.

What is going on? I never said they should produce a turbo car, nor do I want them too. I clearly said the should produce an aftermarket turbo, or at least design it and sell the rights to it. You know, since they can do it in an afternoon.

I think Ike responded that way because internally, an SRT4 and a Neon, or a WRX and an STI are very different.. they are not the same.
However I see what you're saying.....they look the "same" on the outside and thus to the "general" public they ARE the "same"... SRT4 to the avg joe will always be nothing more than a Neon and this would be a factor to the many people who actually care what others think of their ride...
Ike apparently does not care....
Just a difference in opinion i suppose

I am inclined to disagree!

Your preaching to the choir here. I was just making a comment about Cas' thought that anyone can slap a turbo in a car and call it a day. It's simply not the case, and you're just reenforcing that notion. I am really not trying to justify mazda's involvement. I couldn't care less what they do

I think the reason most people give so little respect to Evo's, Sti's and Srt4are because of what they were, not what they are.
Let's face it, you can buy a civic and mod the crap out of it and it can give you awesome numbers ( the vid of the civic beating a viper comes to mind). Upgraded suspension, drivetrain, engine, wheels, tires, exhaust system, turbo, intercooler, and computer system. All upgrades to a basic car. What these companies did was put on all the after market mods that you would have put on, before they sold it too you. Thats why they get no respect. Awesome performance numbers but little respect.
The Iroc Z was still a modded camero, the cobra is still a modded mustang, and a SRT4 is a fast bastard but it IS...still a neon.
Ike, I know you can mod Sti's and Evo's to be faster but I was talking about stock from the dealer, right out of the box.

I can see how it would be nearly uncontrolable from a dead stop, given the torque steer, but what about with a street start? Would it blow the doors off of most sports cars?

After watching some SRTs in action at an autocross, I will never buy a turbocharged FWD car (not like I really was planning on it anyway).
I srts from stock to modded 300+ hp on the track, and while it was funny to watch thier fronts go up in smoke on every corner exit, I felt sorry for them. My RAW times were faster than all the SRTs, and when the class-leveling PAX handicap was applied... i destroyed them in my stock 8. LONG LIVE THE 8
Also saw some STis and EVOs in action... while better than the SRTs, they still understeered too much, though i imagine with some suspension tweaks and/or ACD settings, they could be set up to handle pretty well in autox.
You still have to give props to mopar for giving a bunch of young drivers access to cheap speed.... wonder what the insurace rates on those bad boys are

If I'm gonna spend $25000 on a car, and my #1 concern is speed, I'd rather get a last years' base model 350Z with no options than a FRIGGIN NEON.
Besides the turboed engine...it's a Neon. The outside? Looks like a neon. Inside? Yep, looks like a cheap *** Neon (unless you consider the 'luxury' upgrades like a new shift ****...woohoo).
Seriously - at the end of the day, it's a Neon. Plain and simple.

This thread is so pointless that I thought I should post in it.
Everyone has a difference in taste, there are many views on this topic. Not everyone likes the SRT4, EVO, STI, or RX8. People have different wants and needs when buying a car. So get over it!
