Subaru 2.5I Sedan
ok i've decided to trade in my car. I went to the mazda dealership while getting an oil change and i asked him what the value of my car was. 23,000 miles, automatic grand touring package, and 18" oem rims, tinted windows, and a customized xm radio. He priced it at $22,000. Now i was wondering if i can go to the subaru dealership and ask for a 2005 subaru 2.5I sedan (mspr19,000). Now my question is if i can go to the dealership and just trade in my car without losing any money out of it. I just want to know if i can trade in my car with just paper work. I'm in college i dont know anything about this stuff. my parents bought the car and they support my decision in tradingt he car in as long as they dont have to pay anything.
I would appreciate any response

I don't think you are recognizing all the variables in this transaction
after taxes and title/etc. you are looking at a very very poor deal

I think he is fallen into the pile of bullshit that says you can't drive in snow unless you have AWD. I know soccer moms fall for it all the time, but I would expect more from a car enthusiast. At least, I assume he is an enthusiast since he sought out a online forum for his car.
Anyhow, why not go ask a subaru dealership?

Despite what some others have said the RX-8 will not handle as well in the snow as the Suby. However with the proper tires it will certainly be fine in all but the worst of conditions. I'd understand your trade if it were for one of the turbo Subys (very practical yet still fast and fun), but for the 2.5I you're cutting down on the fun factor big time (save for in the snow).
If you're still set on doing this at least consider a used WRX, especially since there will be a lot of nice ones on the lots from people trading in for the 06s. If you don't want a used car like the WRX then just get yourself some snow tires and have fun with the RX-8 IMO.

i like driving in the snow and the 8 can do it better than my old 626, but it is far from an excellent snow car, it cant go up steep hills or through the deep stuff. You have to pay a lot of attention to what you are doing otherwise small errors can grow to become big errors and grow to become accidents. Now an Audi A4, thats a fun car in the snow, the quattro really is a fantastic system and you can be plowing through 4" of snow at 65mph with little problem, you can climb hills and everything.

yeah i didnt see that one coming either :p something is wrong with Ike.
neways back on topic - I understand your situation. Im in college too, and it snows here quite often in the winter in Maryland. However, you will take a serious hit in the trade in.. i guess it dosnt matter that much to you since its your parents money. I personally wouldnt trade in the rx8, with the right tires it would be just fine. AWD is overated, its all about tires. Even if you have an lancer evolution, without the right tires it still handles bad in the snow.

I live in williamsport, and drove my 8 for 2 winters before I got rid of it. As a matter of fact have a set of 17" wheels that I used with snow tires if you'd be interested. You'd just need tires because the tires are going on the STi ![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
Also if you're set on trading, I'd go with a used WRX personally.

I didn't see any objective advice, just a bunch of criticizing and opinions, so I'll be the guy to help answer your question. I'm unsure of exactly what you are asking, but I'll answer it anyway. First off, if you own the car outright, you can trade it in for a new car and pay nothing. There's a good chance you will not see that $22k, and could get lower then that amount. Dealers tend to low ball on trade in if you purchase something of lesser value. What you are suggesting leaves an open door for them to take advantage of you, so do your homework, and be ready. You can walk into a Subaru dealership with your title to RX8, and trade it in for a brand new car. Assuming trade in value matches the car you are buying, you can walk away with an even trade. In this case, they should cut you a check for the difference of trade in value vs purchase price of the Subaru. I suggest going to Subaru, finding the car you want, and negotiating a price. Then show them your trade. If you pick up a Subaru for lets say $18000, and they give you 21k for your trade in, you will then be cut a check after all those little tag fees ect ect. I know in my state your trade in deducts the sales tax, so depending on where you live you may be able to avoid sales tax. If you decide to buy a base model 2.5I, you most certainly should receive money back, along with a new car. What you get back depends on how smart you are to avoid being ripped off. Good luck!!

NJ is same way, as I used to live there. I can't imagine having to pay full sales tax on a car when you trade in something of a high trade in value, but I did hear somewhere that some states don't do that. If your state doesn't have it, you'd be better off selling your RX8 privately for trade in value, or demanding at least half of that off the price of the car. I can't imagine life without it.
