Tesla S makes its Official Official debut... really this time

http://www.boston.com/cars/newsandre..._s_electr.html

So it appears after the leaked photos a short while ago and then apparently another set of leaks on twitter this morning Tesla has officially announced and shown the pics and specs

The production version of the electric sedan, absent a $350 million loan from the Department of Energy and a manufacturing plant, will be tamer in performance but no less striking in its respective segment when it arrives in late 2011. Hours after embargoed studio photos of the concept car, above, were posted to a Flickr account, Tesla revealed the specifications at the official California launch: a 300-mile range, 45-minute charging, and zero to 60 miles per hour in 5.5 seconds.

At $57,400, the Model S is priced in the range of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Jaguar XF, and other premium sedans. But Tesla buyers can now claim a $7,500 federal tax credit for electric and plug-in hybrid cars, which President Obama announced last week in addition to $2.4 billion in federal grants for electric car and battery manufacturers.

Tesla is a scam.

They will disappear with all the deposits.

You heard it here first,

Why would you call it a scam? I think it's rather brave for an upstart auto manufacturer to attempt such a daring venture.

They will take the deposits and run the Big 3 out of town because they're actually looking towards the future, rather then rehashing 50 year old cars with obsolete propulsion systems.

0-60 in 5.5 seconds, not bad for a sedan full of batteries. It'll outrun an 8, and with only 1 gear.

Huh? They've already delivered a number of units and are building up their San Jose manufacturing capability, with the full blessing of the Govinator.

I'd love to have one, but $100k for an electric Elise vs. half that for a gas-powered is tough to swallow. I wish them well tho' as this technology is, hopefully, the future.

wow it looks nice... almost like a combination of a Jaguar, Maseratti, Aston Martin, BMW 650, -and- an RX-8.

$57K is still kinda pricey though...

News

Tesla released the new Model S just last week (March 26) and it has already received 520 orders.

Now, they just have to build the car.

The Tesla Model S is an electric 5+2, 4-door sedan which accelerates from 0 to 60 mph (100 km/h) in 5.6 seconds and can go 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge. The car sells for 57,400 US dollars (43,400 euros) but comes with a 7,500 dollar (5,670) tax credit from the US government. It can be charged using a 120, 208 or 240 volt electrical outlet, which takes hours, or from an external direct current line in about 45 minutes.

The San Carlos, California-based company is currently applying for a 350 million dollar loan from the Department of Energy's Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Program which it will need to build an assembly plant in California to manufacture the vehicle.

You mean, they don't have a plant yet?

Hey, it's an electric car. There's always something about it that's not quite perfect yet

I like it, looks wise.

It sucks though that all you get is a hummm as it speeds off...I like the sounds of an ICE.
