I also looked at the 350z & mustang GT before deciding on the Mazda, the mazda was the best deal overall. The RX is fine as a daily driver for me
GTI's can be had at invoice or below. Invoice on a Package 2 (leather, sunroof, sat radio) is $24k. Invoice for a sport package RX-8 is $26k. Plus the RX-8 doesn't have leather interior or a sunroof at this price. If you go down to a package 0 GTI... fabric interior and no sunroof... you're looking at like $20-21k invoice pricing. A decent gap. Plus better gas mileage and similar 0-60 and 1/4mi times to the RX-8. It's not a bad deal on paper.

All the VWs I've owned have been nothing but problems. When my wife got rid of hers I danced a jig. I don't know anyone who hasn't had the usual electrical system quirks in their VW, Audi, or Porche. Sorry, I'll stick with my currently quirky, but in a fun way, RX-8.

It was also a boatload moe money to buy as well. Different class here. That wasn't my point. I was just reviewing my opinion on the rabbit in it's price class. If you would like to compare it to another car in the 16-18k price range, and argue what's significantly better then it, then I'm all ears. Naturally I'm not about to compare this car to something out of it's range. I was just pointing out how with my massive miles I drive, already having an S2000, that even this little old 150hp Rabbit can indeed make a nice replacement for the STI. If I didn't have an 06 S2000 sitting in my garage, then there wouldn't be a chance in hell I'd consider unloading an STI for a Rabbit. I'm talking car for the money, and after that test drive, I simply was impressed, just as I was with the GTI. IN fact I'm more impressed with the Rabbit really, because it's a lot cheaper, but feels almost as nice. There's a reaosn why these cars are flying off the showroom floor, and after my test drive, I discovered that reason. Great value PERIOD.
I'd be very interested to hear how a loaded Fit Sport compares to the Rabbit.

I had leather in my last car [VW] and would not do it again here in TX. I can live without the sunroof - not to fond of the sunroof style on the RX anyway. The vw did have a nice sun roof, but at the expense of some head room. I paid less than invoice for my RX w/sport.

numbers are nice & all, but I never got compliments on my VW

The golf can accomodate 225/50 16 tires no problem, the golf has a real rear suspension, and how long until bilstein make something.

The fit sport is nice, stock, the 195/55 15 tires are on 55mm offset wheels http://www.collegehillshonda.com/sto...sportwheel.jpg , that limits how wide you can go without hitting or rubbing. The automatic is drag limited to 110mph in 4th gear, and 90mph in 5th. the 5 speed stick guzzles gas on the highway because 5th is way too short. The special 'Honda Factory Performance' wheels are still 55mm offset, and are only 6.5" wide, 195/50 16 is the correct tire for that size wheel.

I just wish the golf's top gear was 33 1/3 mph per 1000K, so 125mph would be 3750 (drag limited at peak torque, good for crossing montana)

I test drove a new Jetta and thought it was a ripoff for the money. The interior materials are only on par with the current Honda, the steering has no feel, the suspension is mushy and had a lot of body roll, the gearbox shifts like a toilet plunger. I was prepared to like the car before the test drive, but it was a complete disappointment. Five years ago VW had the interior and styling, but the Japanese have basically caught up. I've heard the new GTI is a good drive though.
