Thinking about what car to get next..

So anyways, I'm sick of taking the bus and the Civic is gonna leave soon.. plus I miss my FC dearly..

So either I do a mildly modified TurboII (~15k worth of mods, paint, restoration, gp sports body kit, etc) that will still pass smog (sniffer and visual) and what not. It'd be my 7th (and final FC) Goal would be no more than 250rwhp, and retain full streetability.

Or..

2005 RX-8, riced out (AutoEXE body kit). 18" or 19" Advan Kruezer 5's, lowered, ecu tune + catback at most for performance (damn smog, plus I'm tired of the smell and noise)

Or..

1985 GSL-SE, my first first gen, freshen it (engine, general restoration, new paint, wheels, suspension, etc etc but still constrained by smog.)

yes, I'm a ricer.

past FC's were in the ~230-~250rwhp range.

past FD's were ~300-~350rwhp

Well, I was being sarcastic.

I cut and pasted this since I posted it on an RX-7 Forum too.

oh, and before anyone asks why 2005 -- because I want white.

I would say RX-8 (just don't rice it out! )

If you dump $15k into an FC, then that money is instantly gone because no matter how nice the car is, it still won't sell for much more than any other FC.

The RX-8 will depreciate of course, but it will do so gradually over time so if you get into a situation where you need to sell it, you can at least get some of your money back. Plus you have the warranty, whereas with the FC the repairs will be costing your time and money.

Well, the last 3 FC's I've sold were $8k-12k, well over bluebook, because they were mint and tuned well. Obviously thats not 15k, but I haven't put that much into the previous ones.

Yeah, the RX-8 is tempting because its new and the warranty.. I actually just went to the dealership with a friend and he bought one, I'm jealous.

The 8 would be only riced out to the extend listed in the first post, rims and tasteful body parts. No need to throw lots of speed goodies on it, want to make sure if a better version comes out later I can swap parts over.

Well, if you are really going to modify the RX-8 like that, then I guess there's really no financial advantage over the FC.

I would say go with the one you can really drive and enjoy the most. For example, I could easily afford to get another FD right now, but I'm thinking to get a used Miata instead. They're cheap, reliable, and plentiful so I could do lots of autox and track days, and basically just beat the **** out of it every day with no worries. With a nice FD I'd be too worried about putting miles on it or damaging it to really do that to it. I don't know if you would feel the same way after finding a really nice FC, but it's something to keep in mind.

I would feel the same way. Actually this is intended to accompany my mint low milage FD.

Thats a bonus for the 8, if I put too many miles on it I can just sell it and get another.. plus swap all the parts over. (Which is what I've been doing with FC's, but nice ones are getting harder and harder to find.

Thanks for your input.

It is fun. How is it any more expensive to fix up compared to an FD or FC? I did a little bit of research and I haven't really seen anything for the 8 that costs more than for the FC or FD (besides wheel costs, due to larger sizes)

GET THE FIRST GEN!!
I might just get one for the heck of it, since they're so cheap. The only problem is parking three cars.

Name something that you think is expensive on the 8. I'm curious to see if there is any price difference at all.

Yeah, so upgrades for the 8 aren't really more expencive. I'd venture to say that upgrading FC/FDs is more costly, since you have to do mandatory ECU/fuel upgrades along with turbos.

I do not think those are expensive enough.

Coilover 2000
Wheels/tires 3000
Bodykit 3000
Big brake kit 1200+
Anything that says Mazdaspeed $$$

Yeah, all the prices are the same. Its not like Mazdaspeed charges any less for their products on other cars.

I had Mazdaspeed coilovers on my FC, they were nice. Wheels.. well, I'd have gotten them if Mazdaspeed USA sold them - if they do now, it's too late, already got rims.

I Big brake kit is much more than $1200, probably ~3000.
