I'd go to England to try the same thing except I don't know how to insult an englishman any worse than letting them be who they are!

"Hillary for President" means you get you car stoned?

Is that what they were asking for?

It was a pretty funny episode, even if parts were scripted Borat-style to attain an over-the-top response from the locals ...

edit : RotaryGod, I'm not sure what you could say on the side of the car to insult the average Englishman to the extent that they would do more than raise their eyebrows slightly higher.

The only thing that comes to mind is their national religion - association football. I'm sure that driving a car in Chelsea colours through Liverpool with "Scousers Suck" on the side would probably be pretty dangerous ...

mess with the bull and you get the horns. it is one thing to be funny but it another thing to insult people at the core.

I thought it was really funny. I am a little suprised at the reactions. I live in the south and that must have been a really small town because ive never seen anything that psycho before.

im downloading the clip right now but i think its funny already - driving around alabama... known for being a slightly backwards state in some parts. If what ive read is true - it speaks bad on our part as a county for flipping out over something like that and resorting to mild violence over words. I'm in texas which is south and all conservative and **** (I'm not) but I think it shows how narrow minded some people down here can be when they flip out over someone having different views on things.

Just watched it -- the redneck **** at the gas station who "called up the boys" is your typical middle school drop out toothless piece of deep south trailer trash. Generalizing is a bad thing - but people like THAT are yet another entry on america's big list of problems.

I think its okay for "those" type of redneck bumpkins to think whatever they want, they can even SAY whatever they want. But the instant they start chasing people down and making violent moves on the film crew (throwing rocks) thats when they went from ordinary (i use the term losely) americans, to TRUE ignorant redneck losers.

Final semi-related point... the "culture" of being a redneck is cool with me, but the problem I see is most "rednecks" glorify ignorance, hate, racism, having a closed mind, and contribute nothing to society. I mean when you have confederate flag bumper stickers plasterd all over your shitty truck do they really think they are making a positive statement? All i see when I observe people like that is the statement of "hey look at me, I dwell on the past, i hate blacks, and refuse to open my eyes and join the 21st century"

If you are from the south and love the country and western lifestyle, horses, farms, tractors, trucks, guns, etc awesome... but when you hate and lash out at others for being different you show your true colors.

I think about the only thing that could be done in England with a result as scary would be to drive a British car painted like an American flag with the words "Princess Di was my bitch" and "English football sucks" written on the side and then take it right through the center of Manchester.

I doubt that would get much more of a reaction than "look at this ******, eh?".

Princess Di, while she is the darling of the Woman's weekly set, is hardly a hero of the violent types. And "English Football sucks" is too generic to raise a temper.

It needs to be tribally targetted. Target a specific highly strung team ...

If you were to drive through Liverpool with the "Scousers Suck", that would **** people off. If you were to target Liverpool by referencing the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hillsborough_disaster in nasty way, that would definitely **** people off.

But, when it all comes down to it. Are Americans really that thin skinned? The Simpsons is constantly ragging on England (teeth / peasants / Buckingham palace guards / Prince Charles etc.) and nobody really cared either way. The English culture is so self deprecating that any American insults wouldn't really stick.

The Simpsons had the Australian Prime Minister in a mud pit at the back of Parliament House and turned the entire country into a Mad Max episode. Nobody here (apart from a few highly strung people) really cared, and nobody would have resorted to violence.

Tell the POMS (Englishmen) that they can't play Cricket as they are a bunch of girls....that should do it....Australia just thrashed the touring English team here in 5 Test matches in 5 states...in the greatest game in the world...Cricket..

Australia won the series 5 to NIL!!

A single 'Test Match' is between two teams who play each other (bat and bowl) twice (2 innings each) usually over 5 straight days to find a winner...

SO it takes 25 days of play (6 hours each day) to play 5 separate test matches or games...each game has about a 4 day break.....

Mad Max rocked! You can't use Mad Max in a bad way. Not even as a parody. It just doesn't work that way. Anything mentioning it is a tribute.

Americans make fun of themselves all the time. Our southern rednecks should be sent off to our wars. They'd win on their own and they'd even take their own guns!

please dont do that. when that actually happened, the c**t of an editor of a national paper said he was glad it happened, tho he was eventually forced to apologize, he never actually meant recently saying so.
and to give you an idea how pi55ed people were, as they couldn't actually touch him, the sale of the paper had dropped very drasticly and never recovered; despite the tw*t no longer the editor.

bit of a lighter note, we take the pi55 out of ourrselves because we almost always know a person who's style is being mocked we don't care what others say. look at our 'distinctive' comedy (i know people will debate whether it is comedy or not :D), its been around from even before monty python but did not really hit off till the likes of 'spitting image' and 'harry enfield', and more recently 'little britain'.

Also write "Over 200 years later and I'm still America's Bitch.", "F1 Sucks", "Blair Luvs Bush", "I pay cheaper gas in America", "Screw a dental plan". Though the Di one will definatly stir up some trouble really quick!

So much for the land of free speech. C'mon, "nascar sucks" and "Hillary for President" and they were gonna get "what's coming to them."

Geez!

Cool Just the facts.....

"F1 sucks" and "Blair luvs Bush"

are just facts, you would get very little disagreement or reaction.

Tony Blair is almost universally reviled, and his sucking up to Bush Jr. has been undeniable.

The phrase "I pay cheaper gas in America" sounds like something 'Borat' would say - by the time the Brits stopped laughing at you, you would be long gone.

If we're talking stereotypes here, when a British person insults another Brit, the offended Brit will focus very hard to come up with some witty retort to regain superiority. With Americans, the offending person will simply get punched in the face.

Both cultures are very reactionary and prideful in my opinion. The difference just comes down to the mechanism of response. Saying that one is more enlightened than the other simply because of that is very bizarre to me.

Watched this last night and quite amusing. The only thing I regret is the impression the Brits and others probably have of all Americans being Fat, Redneck, bible thumpin losers.

Now while there are plenty of those in this country there are alot of people with class and an IQ over 100.

I take some exception to Clarksons remarks about New Orleans and Katrina "Why can't the richest country in the world have fixed this by now?"

The UK is what all the size of PA? So sure if we had just one state to worry about as our whole country with the level of taxation that England has it would be pretty easy to take care of things I'd think. Also you are dealing with privately owned property. You can't quickly just bulldoze everything and rebuild it. Someone owns that and what if they don't come back in a year to claim it? What are we supposed to do?

When in Rome right? If they do not know (which I believe they do) or have enough understanding of the local culture (again I think they do) then it is their fault. Mind you, I'm not defending the actions of my Southern Brothers and Sisters here. But if you are going to rattle the hornets nest then be prepared to run like hell. Which they did

Sorry but we shouldn't get a 'pass' on New Orleans. It remains a cluster-f and we deserve the ridicule from other nations for not getting it right.

Haven't seen the Top Gear video yet but it can't be too much worse than:
- Beantowners bagging on New Yorkers
- Californians ripping on anyone "back east"
- Pittsburgher's hatin' on Cleveland
- Residents of 49 Other states + Puerto Rico dissing West Virginia

I remember when the Pittsburgh and Cleveland rivirally was in top gear in the mid to late '80s when the Browns were actually a decent team. People would litteraly die if a Browns fan was caught in 3 Rviers, and Pitt fans would get hung if they were anywhere near the Dog Pound.
In a lot of ways I miss Pittsburgh (used to live there), the pride of city and such, and it's reputation of being such a bad-*** town.
