Which is rumored to return with the Lexus V8 @ 500hp for the top model and a V6 for the entry model. Supposedly will also have a convertible hardtop model too...

looks being subjective, I like the Pontiac's. It looks much better in person. And much better than the 350Z, imo. Add some body work, and it looks fantastic. Interiors are no contest...GTO, hands down. EPA mileage is a toss-up between the 2, though a friend at work exceeds those ratings in his GTO, not sure about the Z. Modability...GTO. Potential for weight reduction...GTO. Exhaust note...GTO. Drivetrain strength...GTO. I wouldn't even consider the Z, if I was looking at the Pontiac. With a little work, it can handle fairly well, it's not bad stock just not confidence inspiring like the 8.

There's no reason to believe that the Rx8 is any less reliable than other cars on the market. People has had problems with this car but you have to remember that the people who cries the loudest typically gets heard. Cindy Sheehan is a good example of this. There are people who does legitimately have problems and there are others that have problems due to abuse or simply they're cry babies. But on a forum like this, it's not surprising to hear more complaints as people with complaints or problems will typically speak out and ask about the problems while people without any problems won't say anything. Not many people will start a thread saying, I have no problem with my car at all....

Here's the LS2 GTO Top Gear vid, just ran across it, and this seems a good place to put it. BTW the D1 drift team likes it .

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but you're just ignorant. Consumer Reports has listed the RX-8 as "recommended" as far as reliability is concerned. Other than a small number of very early build cars, the 8 has an excellent reliability record.

The 8 is build in Japan and is a non-turbo rotary. Many people on the RX-7 forum with non-turbo cars have gone over 200k on the original engine while driving the car hard. There's no reason to expect the many RX-8's won't be able to do the same.

you are 18 and have a RX-8, isnt thats good enough?we sure are a spoiled generation.. anyways..

at that age i can understand the urge for more power... and since you dont have the $$$ to shell out for gas and psot-warranty expenses, my recommendation is go for a SRT-4, has everything you need 4 doors 4 seats, luggage room and lots of power with tons of aftermarket potential..

you will save money on the trade and spend less on gas.

as wellyou shouldnt be worrying too much about the future, as you stated youre 18 and your tastes will differ as you further experience life ...

i based my recommendation purely on the fact that you like a fast 1/4 mile with streetability and pracitcality of a sedan.

a torquey GTO isnt the best combo at the tender age of 18. just a thought.

maybe when you are older get out of school and can afford to run a more expensive car you can go for the torque monsters, and rumour has it better cars might be coming out in the future like the supra and GT-R so you never know... when it comes to sports cars .. you can never think long-term especially if you are the type that always wants something new!

why even waste the time and money?

if you want a drag car out of the GTO, get a set of long tube header, pup cats or no cats a good 3 in back exhaust, and a 50 shot, that will net you high 11's on the 5.7L motor or mid 11s on the 6.0L with a good set of tires and a good launch.

That is plenty fast for most people.

If you're after brute horsepower, get the GTO. Since I actually read your whole post and you're looking to buy USED, not new, you can't go wrong with an '04 GTO. Yeah, they have the LS1 instead of the LS2, but there are WAY more mods for the LS1. It's a proven powerplant; slap a supercharger on there in you're in the high 400s HP-wise. It's already a 13 second car bone stock.

The plain jane looks of the GTO may well save your *** when cops are around. They'll be busy hassling the ricers and you'll just cruise on by.

We have both an 04 RX8 and an 04 GTO. As soon as the Goat's out of warranty she's getting the Supercharger. I can hardly wait. :D

True but the GTO is Australian born and the quality seems to be much better.

To the creator of this thread, if you are seriously looking at a GTO then many of your questions about mods, reliability, aftermarket, 1/4 miles times, etc. will be answered on
LS1/2 GTO

More of your realibilty questions can be answeed on the Australian site for the Monaro (our GTO version). There's a link to that site on the GTO Forum. The car has been out there for quite a few years so they would have some good feedback.

My opinion on your choice? Well, consider what you want the car for (straight line power) I would say go for the GTO.

I will be shoping for a car very soon and the RX8, GTO, and G35 are on my list.

I've owned 16 different cars in my life time ranging from old school muscle cars to imports (had a turbo Supra :D). Right now I have an 03 Nissan Murano (family car) and a 92 Acura Legend coupe. Right before I got the Legend (this summer) I had a Pontiac Grand Prix GTP that was slightly modded. Lots of torque.

Now that I have my Legend, the thing I miss about my GTP is the power, otrher than that, it was a piece of crap...quality wise.

I remember being 18 and to be honest, straight line acceleration was more fun than great handling but when you live in the city (Chicago) torque is more useful.

As for the EVO, STi suggestions, I'm like you, to me those cars are not appealing.

Good luck.

You guys need to understand the kind of investment you need to make to get past 500hp (at least on the RB26) if thats what you mean by serious power. Serious power is impractically expensive on both these cars no matter how many vids you've seen.

Supras are still very pricey. Excessively so for a car that's getting old. The looks are dated, and it's difficult to find one that isn't modded (most times, heavily). If I'm dropping $20k+ on a daily driver, I would want one that's a little newer and a little less driven. I don't care how reliable a car was when it was in production, 8-10+ years later is asking for all sorts of problems. And they're usually the expensive, electrical kind of problems.

well. my recommandation will be the 06STI or the EVO 8 to 9.
if you want to drag them, with just some modification like exhaust and air intake, they will kill the stock GTO which is very hard and expensive to modify. STIs and evos are very easy and cheap to modify. but, i was totally disgusted by the STI's and evo's interior. wtf?? those two companies are dumb. if they can have a leather option, their cars will be one of the best super cars. moreover, STIs and evos out handles 350z and GTO. also, they are "sedans". they have relatively huge trunk space and leg rooms. very impressive.
a second hand one will probably be close to the new 350z's price. so yeah.
mine idea= STI or EVO
i like the "relatively huge trunk space" comment but aside from that i agree the sti and evo is a more rounded car as they can be fast and handle well but then again it comes at a price of ugly for some
