And the WINNER is ALABAMA state for all new Mazda/Toyota joint production plant.
NC was in the final running , but Alabama was chosen and I guess this state has extensive suppliers on-stream for Mercedes, Nissan and a few others I think...
Does NC state have any car plants?

I work for Eaton in the automotive sector, and we've got a lot of manufacturing plants here in the South. Valve train, supercharger, and truck transmission are just a few of the types of plants we have here.

In my opinon this plant will not produce small/medium cars.
I think that both Toyota and Mazda will produce a SUV, and not small or medium.
There is a concept of a SUV from Lexus this month in NAIAS.
MB is producing SUV (GLE) for all the world in Alabama
Honda is producing, Odyssey, Ridgeline and Pilot there.
BMW have the core of world SUV production in SC (spartanburg)
just my 2 cents

However, I don't think modern ATs "suck *****". We are not talking about the Toyota 4AT that was used for over a decade or the ATs found on the RX-8. We are talking about the 8AT found in Corvette, and 10AT found in the Accord. Even the new Mustangs use 10AT now, all the while MT is capped at 7 gears right now, and only a handful of cars have 7MT('vette and 911). Having driven a Corvette 8AT, the AT is pretty solid in that car, shifts lightning fast, and the car is exciting even with an AT. The Accord 2.0T paired with a 10AT is pretty zippy from what I have seen, and remember, AT = no gas pedal release between shifts = no boost drops.
As for rotary range extender, I think it could be a test bed for some of Mazda's new ideas on rotaries, like direct injection, thinner and longer rotors, etc.
EVs are good for commuters. Wish I have an EV so I can go to school quickly without having to drive my 8 for such a short distance.

ASH8, NC has a huge Honda plant. Southern states are picking up many foreign automakers. They have weaker unions plus right-to-work laws and are giving huge tax breaks ,plus additional financial and infrastructure incentives to these companies to locate there. It is all about the bottom line for these companies. Also wages and costs of living are generally lower in the Southern states than the big northern industrial states.

A decision by Toyota and Mazda to build a joint factory in Alabama instead of rumored rival North Carolina is another miss for one of the few Southeast states never to land a modern carmaker.

Toyota already has a big engine plant in Alabama making 4,6 and V8's which will be less than 16 miles from the new MazToy plant which will make 300K Corollas (a small car) and a Mazda SUV for 2021 opening.
NC was never in the running really, logistics for Toyota put Ala in the box seat, and the Ala site was shovel ready, all others were not.

Not unless it equates to profit, which means it would only work as a generate for a hybrid/EV. Toyota is a soulless manufacturer with nothing but corporate mindset bean counters.

Gotta love how their CEO got mad at people for call Toyota cars boring. Gee, I wonder why...
I will take my slow-*** 8, thanks.
If you are looking for straight-line acceleration and straight-line acceleration only, why get an ICE at all? Model 3 is still plenty quick and affordable.

Yep. They are the champ at making the most boring cars.

Hot hatches are for a different market IMO. The new Civic Type R is great, but would you really like owning a car that's overpriced by dealers and full of the rice look?

Hyuandai & Honda are on the list too for alabama manufacturing. Honda is the biggest employer for about a 75mile radius in my area. The companies that work in conjunction with vehicle manufacturers are bountiful.(Think interior pieces, exterior pieces, etc...) Alabama was a no brainer. I figured we would get the bid. I was a little upset they chose a place so far from me though.

I know what I am seeing every trip, ASH8
Cheers
ASH8; IF you read back at my posts you will see it was not I who made the claims about car plants in NC (or lack of them) but other publications, so I suggest you take it up with them?
Reality is and was that Alabama first as the sole state in the running as Toyota already has a huge Engine plant about 10 minutes away, plus many more suppliers for many other car brands exist in Ala not just one.
For every reason Alabama was the only choice, clearly. Basic Business common sense 101, logistically, just in time and costs.
