I do like the Axcela/3. It's a great move forward from the Familia S-Wagon/Protege5. My S-Wagon Sport 20 looks sporty and 100% stock, it's handling is pretty damn tight. Too bad the ride is a bit stiff... hitting bumps and stuff can make a brand new CD skip. Power... well it honestly has some great low-end torque. It's tuned well for daily driving in Japan. Hit the highway or need to make a high speed pass... no good and watch that fuel needle drop! I was following a friend in a Nissan Stagea (basically a 4 door Skyline Wagon)... which of course is T/C stock. He obviously blew me away on the highway. Not even racing... just him passing cars... I couldn't keep up. Coming back to the Axela/3... the new 2.3L engine is a nice improvement... good for its class, but not enough umph.

I'd have picked up a Atenza/Mazda6 instead. I love the looks of that car in the 5 door/hatchback (not wagon) model. And in the US you get the V6 (Japan only has a 2.0 and 2.3 I-4). Or waited for the Mazdaspeed 3. FF, but it has the same engine as the MS6. The Imprezza WRX might have been another choice...

I think the Mazda 3s are great as sedans. mazda 6s are great too. Seeing them around reminds me of my 8.

The RX-8 does not cost that much more to own than any other comparible sports car or SUV out there. I spend roughly around $150 a month on gas, before I got this car I had an SVT Focus, which I spend around $90 in gas when it was much cheaper for roughly the same amount of miles. The 8 is worth that much more just for the fun of driving it. The highlight of my day is going to and from work in my 8. And then there is oil, hell that is only a couple bucks every 2 months. You bought a sports car, it is going to need more attention, and cost a little more to have, just because it is a blast to drive.

Umm. It sounds like you are arguing with yourself. Compared overall to many daily drivers, the RX8 is at the bottom of list in cost to own. That is stating Captain Obvious. Some people look into the future, and need to make a decision. Someone like you doesn't care about costs by using RX8 as a daily, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Depreciation and longevity was the key factor for me when I owned the RX8. I just did not see the RX8 giving me 150k miles trouble free, but I'm not saying it's not capable. The Mazda 3 is a nice choice to save money, get more long term reliability, and still have a fun car to drive. We all have different personalities. Many on here do not use their RX8 as a daily for some of those reasons various people unload their RX8 for a more practical car. I guess sometimes we buy a sports car, then the reality hits that if you wanna play, you gotta pay.

Looks like us American are overlooking one big difference that SilverBullitt has handicapped over us, Canadian gas prices!

A few weeks ago, 120 cents Canadian per liter = $3.86 per gallon USD

At its peak, some Canadians were paying almost 167 cents per liter in Montreal, thats about $5.36USD/gal

I used to do half a tank with my RX-8 about 189KM (max i did was 220 and i drove like an old lady). gas 91

With my new Mazda 3 GT, i did 300KM half a tank.. WOW!! .

I do enjoy it, low torque power is great.

Already applied 4 layers of Zaino... Looks great on black..:D

Mod. Maybe one day..

I appreciate the relatively huge 15 gallon tank in my Protege. Small Mazda sedans are very nice to own, especially one with 18" rims and 245/40 tires with gas shocks. The 3 is a great design, and the Mazdaspeed version should be a real piece of work when it comes out.

But I will still get an 8, and that day is coming soon. I drive only about 7500 miles per year, so the gas cost difference doesn't trouble me much. And I think we'll see prices trend downward in the coming months anyway.

Yes, it IS a sports car- and that makes all the difference.

My wife drives a 2.3 mazda 3 and it's a great car. It has the RX8 steering wheel and controls, with a good sound system and solid mileage. Fully loaded, we walked out for around $20K. It's slightly bigger than my WRX (mostly a bigger trunk), but trounces it in ride quality and stereo system.

Hey, me and you are in the same boat. I have a msp though and I will have an 8 but only as a nice day/weekend car. I drive a little over 20k miles a year though and I will be at the gas station everyother day with the 8
