At a media event in Sweden over the weekend, the Swedish manufacturer chose to show off its latest technology: the new collision detection system on the S60.
You know how the tech works: sensors in the car detect obstacles in the road ahead, applying the brakes to slow or even stop the car before a big crunchy mess occurs.
A fine idea... so long as it works. Volvo's finest engineers released the unmanned S60 from its hutch at a speed of just under 30mph, sat back and...
Well, fast-forward to about 30 seconds into this clip and you'll find out. It doesn't require a firm grasp of Swedish to figure out that it doesn't go well.
Volvo blamed the failure of the technology on a battery issue which, it says, would have been easily spotted by a human driver. The collision detection system had also worked perfectly several times before the crash.
Maybe it was all a cunning PR ruse to demonstrate the effectiveness of the S60's crash structures.
Maybe, however, the Collision Detection System worked exactly as hoped, informing all and sundry after the impact that, yep, there had indeed been a collision.
We fear not. Whichever way, someone's going to have to go a long way to top this as Fail of the Month...

What happened to the Air Bag Deployment?..
AHH..Don't worry the Chinese "GEELY" will fix it...

I don't like this braking system. There are small country roads where you have tight turns and concrete\rock walls that may be detected as obstacles. I'd rather use my brain to brake...

This is pretty worrying - as is the recent TV ad I saw for a minivan with sensors that not only stop you reversing over your kids, but also look left and right so that you can continue to accelerate blissfully out of your driveway, secure in the knowledge that the car will take care of alerting you to things that you ought to be paying attention to yourself.
Grrr.

Yup. More devices aimed at letting the driver ignore more of their surroundings.
If you want to drive from point A to point B without any interaction with the world around you, while being able to text, talk, type on your computer, do your hair, makeup, etc..., for about 5 cents per mile (60 miles per gallon a $3 per gallon)...
...we have an answer for that. It's call the BUS.
Use it and leave the road to those of us that are willing to pay attention, react as needed, and have fun doing it.

car manufactures are making cars easier to drive but once the system goes wrong its just gonna be like the Toyota gas pedal accident. car users should learn how cars work not just rely on the electronics.

The way I see it, ppl just need to be taught to drive.
Everything went to hell when driving became a right instead of a privilege.
If you suck, you cant drive. Period. Idiot drivers kill people but apparently killing people < Killing the Economy.
Oh wells.
