Efini, was the high line division that Mazda was trying to get to compete with Lexus and Infinity. Mazda did have several Efini models in Japan. The third genRx7 was badged Efini for part of its Japanese life but not all of it. I believe the 929 and Cosmo (3 rotor) were also part of the line. The symbol is very cool and kind of looks like a rotor with lightning (actually the Japanese symbol for infinity I was told). The line was never launched in the US--obviously. Some of my info here could be wrong, but this is what I have been told, so thought I'd share.

Interesting. I recall that Mazda originally had a line called Amati (which happens to be Miata spelled sideways), that was supposed to compete with Infiniti and Lexus in the U.S. I guess the name became Efini and it was limited to Japan? Who knew.

Most Mazda's cars beside being name after numbers, eg 323, MX-5, RX-7 they still got a name to them, eg, Austina (one of the 323), Eunos/Miata (MX-5) and Efini/Savanna(for the RX-7). So is there a name for the RX-8. I wonder?

Efini was started around 1996 for the 3rd gen RX-7, though I think there was an Efini 2nd gen too in it's last days. The symbol is an infinity mathamatical symbol "artistically enhanced". The car was "enhanced" with several redesigned bits ("Y" pipe for one - the cast aluminum pipe that joins the output of the two turbos). I think all RX-7s from 1996 to 1999 were Efini models. It was not a "model" name, rather a designation of enhancement or quality of performance.
You can buy Efini badges from Rotary Performance and other sources. They get stolen from cars even faster than the stock Mazda seagull badges.

Efini, Amati, and Eunos were other names for Mazda. Like Lexus/Toyota Infinity/Nissan. They were not other names for the Miata, RX-7, etc. The Miata was the Eunos Roadster, the RX-7 the Efini Savanna, like so.

I think it would be cool if the 8 had an efini name.

btw: for sticklers, don't say it "ee-fin-ee", it's "on-fin-ee" (without so much of the "n" sound)...
if you've ever heard the japanese equivalent of "uh huh", you'll know what i'm talking about.
