Except the TDI still doesn't have the Sky D engine, which is dramatically different in many ways.
Calling 2 engines similar just because they use the same fuel is quite an injustice to both. After all, our rotaries feel just like those V8s don't they? Both use gasoline, so they must be.

diesel isn't gas. Calling diesel dirty gas is like calling moonshine dirty beer.
And you clearly don't really recognize modern clean diesels and how clean they really are.
Did you watch the video I linked? Did you notice the part where it meets european emissions regulations WITHOUT any exhaust treatments? Set aside your preconceptions.

Sorry, i deleted my recent post. I never knew that diesel is cleaner than I thought. I just need to learn more about the modern diesel.

And yet most people here bought RX-8's as their DD's
I can see that the diesel would be great if you often carry lots of people, and/or want to tow things into the mountains. But 90% of my driving is just me commuting. No towing ever. No kids to drive around now, but maybe occasionally taking another couple out to dinner. So if the diesel accelerates about the same as the gasoline engine, I'm just wondering if and where I'd ever notice the difference in torque?

We were heavily considering the Sky-D variant of the CX-5 for the future. Unfortunately we have come to realize that we would really have to go out of our way in NYC to get diesel, and there is a HUGE mark up in metro NY for diesel. I don't travel to NJ often either. Not to mention 87 oct gas(Sky-G has no problem with that) is much cheaper, around 40-50 cent a gallon difference at times. I would really love to have the extra oomph without a doubt, and wouldn't hesitate paying the premium for the Sky-D for it, but the convenience (or lack of in NYC) is a huge factor.
Either way, we will be leasing a Sky-G CX-5 soon. The biggest reasoning for leasing is because we are undecided about the diesel which should be coming the first quarter of 2013.

So, if you need to find a diesel fuel station, look for one that either has a really high roof thing over the pumps, or no roof thing over the pump. Then, just look for the pumps with the green handles.
Every single town is going to have a station with diesel, no matter where you are in the US.
As for you living in and around NYC, there are stations with diesel.
I used to live there, and saw it at the bulk of the larger stations, even on Queens Blvd in Long Island City. If you can't find it, its because you have never needed to look for it up until now.

I'm not an SUV fan. Not even small ones. Saying that I'm a huge diesel fan. Gasoline is dirty dirty crap and is responsible for most of the gunk inside your engine. Yes even your rotaries so don't blame it on the oil metering. I really want a new Skyactiv-D next gen Mazda 6.
