Are you a skilled driver?

I was wondering how many people feel they are a talented/good/skilled driver. I get the impression it's kind of one of those things everyone thinks they're good at.

To clarify, I mean a skilled performance driver? (Good handling, Car Control, skills, technique, fundamental understanding of automotive engineering, good judgment, etc.) BUT, I don't mean professional racing drivers either. Think more along the lines of safe and confident with performance driving.

So the Poll question is: what percentage of people do you think ARE capable performance drivers?

Should make a poll asking wether or not people would consider themselves skilled drivers and then compare it to this.

I consider myself very skilled.

Not at 'driving' per se, can't heel/toe to save my life, but for what I do I'm good....

Rev matching, smooth transitions, anticipating traffic and just knowing what the other guy will do - as a 'driver in traffic' I'm awesome.

.....and that's what counts 99% of the time.

I haven't seen anything that specifically addressed "performance driving", but there have been studies that ask how good people think they are at driving. The results almost always show that most people think they are better than most of the population, which is obviously problematic.

I was considering this with the thought of new cars being produced with such high performance potential and available to be purchased by 'the average Joe'.

I know a lot of people who would only be dangerous when they decide to 'drive fast'.

Like my buddy who was amped when he got his accord hybrid v6. He thinks he's some super fly driver in his auto hybrid. He scared me to death, flinging his car around recklessly at high speeds with one hand on the steering wheel. I'm pretty brave, but I had to speak up and tell him to slow down some and put both hands on the steering wheel, and if he can't keep both hands on the wheel then he better keep it at least at the speed limit or let me out.

There's a lot of people who probably narrowly escape death everyday. I was in the fast lane the other day on the highway and I was cruising with traffic at 80mph and I have some idiot in a Mercedes riding my bumper and then swerves into the next lane and floor it to pass everyone at 90+mph. I wonder how these people stay alive.

I believe I have less flaws as a track driver than I do as a street driver. There is a lot more to keep track of on the street.

I voted for: less than 5%.

And I'm not anywhere near the rare few. Nothing wrong with working on it though...

The top 5 most common mistakes I see on the road, I have been guilty of at least once before. So in reality I'm no better than anyone else. If it were not for good brakes and my guardian angel, I'd be dead many times over.

A major factor of accidents other than fatigue, distraction by scenery or phone, or drugs, is aggressive driving (gestures, blocking, tailgating). If I were truly a skilled driver I would avoid all those things all of the time. However, I am a big fan of aggressive gestures.

I have been given gestures in the past, and I have to say they have made me a better driver.

I said less than 5%. Everyday I see someone on the road who is endangering others. I see people just changing lanes without even glancing at their mirrors, tailgating, speeding, or weaving through tight traffic. I admit to talking on a phone while driving, sometimes you just have to, but texting is much more dangerous. As far as car control, i think most people have none. Most people don't realize that on wet/icy conditions, their cars won't brake and maneuver like in the dry. All the time I see someone driving up to a light and hit their brakes when they're 10 feet away and just slide through the intersection. If it wasn't for ABS and stability control, there would be a lot more accidents, especially during the winter. The other day, there was a light dusting of snow on the ground and a car decides to weave through traffic and pass everyone. A mile later everyone passed him because he had spun out and ended up in a ditch. I laugh everytime I hear someone say they're a good driver because they can drive straight from light to light. I don't claim to be a great driver, but I am careful.

If most people were not skilled in handling, control, judgment, you and I would still be stuck in traffic right now.

Probably 99% are skilled drivers. Everyone slows down in the rain. A few oddballs I observe each day, are nothing compared to the hundreds that move along unobserved.

I dunno, I don't think driving in a straight line from light to light requires much skill or control. I think if you were to take a random person and put them in a situation where their car starts to lose control, like the back end stepping out, most likely they wouldn't know what to do. I think most people would panic and stomp on the brakes. I think we have gotten used to fwd and automatic transmissions and driving has become something that people think they can do without being fully aware or in control. I dont know, that's just my opinion.

I went with 5-10%... But it depends on what you mean when you say "skilled". If you are just talking about people who are fully capable of handling a car very well then I say 5-10. If you are talking about people who are truly master performance drivers then definitely <5%

Well, I thought of the percentages this way....5% equal 1 out of 20. Up to 10% could be up to 1 out of 10 drivers are skilled. I just happen to think that the cars, and blind chance saves most people.

As I get older, I'm determined to not be like other older drivers I see. I know I'm a safe driver because I have to be very aware of the idiots on cell phones around me. I avoid accidents every day by being conscious of what some incompetent drivers around me are likely to be up to. Take a street survival course sometime. It makes you a much safer driver!

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my Grandpa. Not screaming in terror like the other people in his car did.
