This kid must be an idiot. He posted that's he's in SC for awhile, in his rx8... The car he supposidly parted out (stole all our money to get his engine fixed). God I can't wait for these charges to get to him, if not I'll go out there and handle it myself and get the police and MPs on the ball to get this all wrapped up. I hope someone out in SC does meet up with him...

Realistically, being in the service doesn't make you a better person. Just because you sign on the dotted line doesn't mean that you automatically become the savior of humanity. A lot of enlisted personnel join because they don't really have any other option, so in my opinion you actually have less trustworthy people in the military than the normal populace that goes to college and then finds a career.
Being in the military just makes it easier to catch them hahaha.

People (enlisted and officer alike) in the military should be held to a higher standard. You are almost certainly right about what motivates a significant portion of the people who join, and the raw material (new recruits) that arrive at the front gate of the various boot camp facilities may need significant work, but the professionals (in all services) that do that initial training do a damn good job instilling some basic values and ensuring that professionalism and discipline will be the norm rather than the exception. With all that said, there are always going to be some bad apples. Imagine for a minute this guy worked for McDonalds or Target. How much help would his employers be providing to those that this guy ripped off. I'm betting that 99% of employers would do nothing.
I agree that just signing on the dotted line does not make you a better person, all the stuff that comes after the ink dries is what should make a difference. It’s too bad that you actually think that enlisted personnel are less trustworthy than the general populace. I’ll get off my soap box now.
I have also heard many disparaging comments about the generation who is currently finishing high school and trying to find their way to adulthood. The current generation is fundamentally no different than all the generations that have come before them. The difference is how the rest of us treat them. They only know what they have been taught, and the problem lies with us. If we make the expectations clear and hold them accountable for their actions, then their performance will be stellar. I have seen this with my own eyes, so I know it’s true. I think all of us know what I am saying is true, its just easier to blame someone else. Even the most vocal critics of this generation wouldn’t suggest that the change is due to some dramatic evolutional shift that took place in the last 10 years. So if it’s not nature it must be nurture. So the next time you want to say that the kids today are messed up be sure you are standing in front of a mirror. That way you will be talking to the right person. Expect them to be untrustworthy and unreliable and they will not disappoint you, do the opposite and they will surpass your goals and move on to achieving their goals. One thing that we did right with the kids of today is we have taught them to have ambitious goals and dreams.

How did you go from the character of military members to kids? Half of that rant had nothing to do with anything that was discussed here.
People in the military are held up to a higher standard, the UCMJ is a lot more harsh than the normal laws the populace has to abide by. However just because the punishments are harsher and a higher standard is held for people covered under the UCMJ doesn't mean it's going to work. It's all up to the person, it's nobody's fault but their own.

You are both right. A few weeks can't change a person completely, and I wouldn't suggest that boot camp will turn a sinner into a saint. What it can and should do is lay the ground work, and introduce a solid set of values. It is up to the rest of the folks in the military to make sure that those values remain. I also have known plenty of folks who were fine at work, but would be a handful at the bar in the evening, or worse over seas. Many steps have been taken to stop that type of behavior, and the general population of the military is coming around, slowly at times.
I am just disheartened by Vet's or active duty folks having so little faith in the enlisted folks in the military.
Paul, I think you hit the nail on the head when you characterized the military as stressing responsibility at work and ignoring personal responsibility when off duty in the past. Many who are still active duty have come to the same conclusion. For the last several (7-10) years there has been a conscious effort on the part of all parts of the chain of command to address that issue and things have improved drastically even during the short time I have been active duty.
The “kids of today” rant was just thrown in as a bonus. Take it or leave it.

thats about as long as I've been around, and though I cant offer any realistic better solution - the majority of the efforts I see are IMO simply babysitting efforts. Almost more of a "keep the egg off our face" than anything of a higher purpose

I was refunded and taken are of... $1600! Did you guys do the PayPal dispute process. When Marlon replied to me he said all disputes were refunded. I am still not convinced that Marlon isnt Allen but who knows? Allan is a piece of crap no matter what and I hope he is deployed.
