The ecu itself implements a seed/key authentication mechanism before it will respond to certain diagnostic commands, such as flashing. Cobb changes the key, but uses Mazda's algorithm.

This is different issue than the protection used on the tune files and AccessPort.

I've poked around at it, because I'd like to add features to my AccessPort. However, the firmware updates for it are obfuscated somehow as well, and no source is available (gpl violation.) I'm sure someone actually good at reversing could figure it out easily, but I think I'll save my limited brainpower for the ecu itself.
