If you convince jon to do the dremel piece, i'll do the rest of it...i love installing car audio components...I actually had a lot of fun working on Jon's last night, and i can't wait to see it after he dremels the ash tray...it should look a lot like mine...copy cat. Sorry i didn't make it last night, but i hope you guys had fun.

Harry,
If you want to do your stereo, just order a pie adapter, the M-Bus to RCA or Mini (I got the mini cable) and get a sat radio head unit. We can work out a way to do it, but if you want custom stuff done to the ash tray, wait until I do mine first, lol.

I'll be doing it either tonight or this weekend since I have nothing better to do (except go buy stuff for thanksgiving and clean my apartment.. blah)..

Hopefully, I can get it all cleaned up and the way I want it and it'll be awesome.
I'll probably pull the bulb out from behind there too and wire in a blue LED. I just happen to have a few of those sitting around (tho I dont know what voltage it outputs to that bulb and if it's 12 volts, I'll need to build voltage divider circuit to drop the voltage to 5).

Either way, doing your install is no big deal at all. It's not hard, just a little time consuming the first time through.

And yea, it goes a LOT faster if you have a second pair of hands to get the stereo and stuff out.

I have about 400 of them somewhere, lol. They're ultra bright and I'd need to re-download the part info from mouser so I know what Vf is. I dont remember if it's 5,3.3 or 12 but I have an old computer case that I have about 20 of them in, lol. Anyway, yea.. They were cheap so, if I get one working in there, i'll let you know.

I just finished the interim install. It's much neater and cleaner now but I haven't cut anything. I still cant close it. The reason for this interim install is 2 fold.

1. I'm having a hard time removing the bulb adapter from the ashtray and I don't want to do any cutting in the car.

2. W/O doing #1, I'm not sure if cutting this thing will even be worthwhile. The reason being is that I'm not 100% sure that I can even get this thing in the way I want it anyway as the ashtray is not a flat surface on the bottom (the right side is slightly more intrusive than the left because of the removable tray.

So what i've done in the meantime is removed the metal clip that holds the tray in place (since I've removed the tray, it's unnecessary) and I'm now using the hole from the clip to route wires. The install is much cleaner now.

I've also moved the power from the ashtray to the console outlet. They're both switched on ignition so it powers on and off properly. The wire runs out of the console on the right side and through the pass through under the shifter panel and up through the ashtray hole. I used some adhesive wire covering to cover the wire in the center console so it looks decent. This allowed me to use some velcro to secure the head unit itself. It now sits in the ashtray instead of in front of it but the door still cannot be closed.

I'd need to move the whole unit about 1/2 an inch back to get that door closed. To do that, I'd have to dremel 1/2 an inch out of that center divider and probably flatten out the right side (remove the intrusion I mentioned before). I'm not saying I'm not going to do that, but until I figure out how to remove that bulb, no cutting will take place. Once I figure out how to remove the bulb, I'll most likely move the power back to behind the ashtray so it doesnt have to run to the center console.

I'll take some pictures of it here in a few but my camera battery is dead at the moment.

Very Nice. From this board i've sound so many uses for that ashtray.

I want to do the iPOD hook-up in the middle storage section. Since you have done all the wiring... that should probably be very simple.

You can add an iPod hookup pretty easily. Just put a splitter on the mini connector that goes to the sirius head unit and run the second to the iPod. However, that wouldn't allow you to change tracks on the steering wheel like a denscion(spelling?) ice-link plus would.
I'm not sure how those connect yet but we can surely find out.
You MIGHT be able to run both of them thru the pie adapter. I just dont know.

DFW: BJ's in addison last one of the year (for me) 12/15 7:30pm

Well guys.. It's been an incredible year. We saw about a 2-3x increase in member (drinker) growth this year as well as had some great meets.
So who is up for one last meet this thursday in addison? I'm out of town until the 30th after next monday so I won't be able to be at one on the 29th.
Anyone interested?

Jon

wow...we might be in the same place at the same time...I wonder if that will destroy the fabric of the universe...or at least make it shudder.
