I was just talking with the mom of one of the students in my son's class. The Academy on Bryant Irving was giving a 25% discount to people that were buying items for the victims of Katrina. I went and picked up two t-shirts and a pair of shorts and sweatpants for a 6 yo. girl that was on the list. With the discount it came to just over $25. I also learned that Benbrook will be taking in about 50 families at one of the local churches. I'll have to stop by and see what all is on their list. Might have to make a run to Sam's.

I have one family right now that I am helping to find a house here. They are fairly lucky all things considered. They only lost their house which was paid off. They got out of town and had plenty of money saved up and good credit. Their jobs also allowed them to just transfer here. They are going to buy a house and stay here and let their insurance sort everything out later.

I am also trying to help 2 other families. They aren't so fortunate. They need places to live but are really looking for cheap rental houses or apartments. The hard part is finding a cheap one that would be better for them to stay in than just staying with family. They will find one somehow whether it's through my help or not but at least I am making an attempt. I may be a real estate agent but I don't do rentals and am not trying to make any money off of them. I'm also trying to round up old furniture to help them out. Both families have nothing right now.

not sure if these folks would qualify, but these are some seriously nice section-8 type apartments. I believe they have 3 properties in the houston area. I know the company is trying to help evacuees.

My husband works for this company and heard them saying something about FEMA certificates or something like that, but I'll forward you the two complexes numbers and you can check them out.

HTH,
Rachel

Thank you Texas for stepping up and helping out your Louisiana neighbor. It is unbelievable the loss of life and property this Hurricane has caused. Any effort is greatly appreciated by the evacuees. I was amazed to find that 28, 000 fellow state employees lost their place of work. Thanks again for any help you offer to the evacuees.
