Might move to Austin
Might move to Austin and trying to find a good place to live. Been looking at condos like Sky Bridge and Village on Congress but it seems that construction isn't finished...has anyone heard or seen the progress over there? Have any of you guys heard of Edgewick? Thinking of that place too. Any recommendations? I will be working in the downtown area if I take this job.

I don't have any idea why people would want to live anywhere near downtown, especially when you can have a pretty nice house in a nicer area for about the same money as one of these nutty *** overpriced trendy condos.

Yeah, I'm trying to move into a house by Slaughter and Manchaca, rent is 1300/month for a 3 bedroom 2 garage, which is awesome. So definitely check out Olympic Heights, I highly recommend the neighborhood.
And as stated before...traffic sucks. They finally started installing traffic cameras here in south austin because everyone was running reds.

Nice, if it goes through though, that's not gonna be for another 2 months until my lease is up for my apartment, I live over by 290 and mopac right now, so far west that sometimes I feel I'm not part of Austin. But it's nice for work, because I've got <5min commute to both my jobs.

1. downtown views are awesome -- not that austin has the best skyline yet, but i'll take a night city view of a hill/lake view anyday of the week.
2. proximity!! houses are great, don't get me wrong, but some people love being able to walk to bars, coffee shops, restaurants, shops, etc. again, i'd love to have a house/yard/garage/dog, but some people just prefer being close to things - even the best of neighborhoods/suburbs, you can't walk to much.
anyway, good luck if you move here. it's a great city. sorry i don't know anything about those particular places you mentioned. fyi the traffic does suck, but it's really not that bad, it's all relative - just depends on what you're used to.

1. views are awesome ?!? Are you kidding me? what's so aweosme about looking around and seeing cranes, unfinished skyscrapers and/or condos? You obviously have not been to the right places around here if you think that rocks over "hill/lake" views, pffffftttttt c'mon man, you can't be serious.
2. With the way this place is exploding everywhere, this is a weak argument as well, most of the newer neighborhoods have tons of retail surrounding them, sure it's not 6th street (which is WAY over rated by the way, the hip place now is South Congress, and even that gets annoying quick as it's filled with all these lame *** scenesters walking around trying to look cool etc.) but I for one have a Starbucks and a couple of other places within walking distance, and I don't get pummeled by homeless people when I'm out walking the dog in my neighborhood.
Another reason I'd hate to live anywhere near downtown is parking/privacy - It's free to park in my own driveway, or in my own garage, which I can do whatever I want to with, or build whatever I want to in it, or change my oil or do whatever in my own driveway. I don't have to worry about my car being in some parking garage guarded by some miserable high school drop out who hate his/her job and is jealous of my car to begin with, and I never have to worry about anyone parking next to me and dinging my ride, or vandalizing it. My neighbors are across the street, and on either side of my house, not on top or bottom of me, playing annoying loud music or owning a dog that won't quit barking, or whatever. I also don't have rules that prevent me from working on my car or doing whatever I want to with my house, ****, I'd paint it pink if I wanted just to prove a point
Right now these places are the fad and hip etc., houses never go out of style, and are a much better investment in my opinion, it's all good though, some people want to be in the thick of things and suffer all the above for the sake of being able to say "I live in a condo downtown", so more power to them, I just don't see any good reason to put up with all minuses for what I'd have to pay, when I could have my own house (and a nice one at that) my own yard, my own driveway, garage, way more privacy, probably more equity long term etc etc for the same money, but whatever, different strokes I guess

you can't compare you living in the suburbs walking to starbucks or cvs to living in a city and having over 100 different bars/restaurants/shops to choose from. i'm with you, 6th street IS overrated, and soco IS a fad and quite annoying, but that doesn't change that i, personally, would rather live in a downtown vs the burbs. i've seen PLENTY of scenic landscapes, sunsets, etc., i grew up near a lake, water skiing, etc., i just personally like the city better. of course a sunset over the lake, etc. on any given day is unbeatable! i agree w/ the parking too, it's obviously better to have a garage and a "guaranteed" parking spot, but that itself isn't enough for me to waver.
don't be fooled into thinking condos don't go up in value like houses - you have less of a chance to personalize a condo, but i don't think you realize just how many people DO want to live in a city ... condos' values will ALWAYS go up over the years, just look at ALL major cities around the country.
anyway, you like your house, i like my (pretend - b/c i'm poor) condo
back to the OP, if you need more help, my buddy is a realtor. def let us know if you move so we can meet you at some point. altho i've been here a year and haven't met any fellow 8's...

I wasn't trying to say I'm right and you're wrong, all I'm saying is I just think it costs too much for what you get. I'm not doing a good of trying to say that but whatever, didn't mean to argue or make it seem like an argument. My personal opinion is I'd rather my home be a refuge and away from everything, that way when I don't want to have deal with anything I don't have too, plus to me paying what those things are going for and only getting a half of the square footage of a nice house for the same money etc. just doesn't make sense, but like you've mentioned, some folks might want that and don't care and/or just handle the compromise between the 2. I suppose it really comes down to priorities and compromises really, if your priority is being close to town then the condo/apartment thing works, if your priority is privacy and having space to do things then a house works better, it'd be nice if you could have both, but I don't even want to guess how much that would cost
joe's pic is pretty sweet, until you wake up one morning and the lift is down or you don't have electricity or you lose a car in a building fire etc.

I would think this place being rated as one of the top 3 "recession proof" cities and everyone and their dog and puppies and puppies' puppies moving here for the jobs is why there is traffic, we didn't used to have soooooooooooo many people crammed into this place before, plus most of them can't drive or speak english for that matter

Haha, I'm one of those new people in the past year. I came here a year ago to start school, but there is no way I could stand living downtown or on riverside, because I like to keep to myself alot, and only party when I actually want to.

Heh...I live between westlake and bee caves...
Its HELLA sweet over here...the overpriced area keeps the ghetto out...
Only thing I have to worry about is getting run over by a succor mom in her lexus at the HEB parking lot...

Or watch out for people who intentionally will nail a car for fun. One of my friends works at the Target at 620 and he parked his car far from everyone to not get it hit, so naturally someone had to dent his car.
To think I was considering transferring out to that Target location, because mine doesn't have enough hot girls working there

so does that thing have multiple lifts? what if you and your neighbor want to go somewhere at the same time?
