Road race at Texas World Speedway, College Station
Hey all, this sounds pretty fun, i probably won't be able to go but I encourage others to attend I'm posting this to help out-
Hello racing enthusiasts,
You are invited to our Lone Star region SCCA road races at Texas World Speedway, College Station on March 6th-8th (Fri-Sun). You can come out just as a spectator and walk around the infield of the race track, configured to run the long road course of 2.9 miles this time. Or, if you would like to participate in the event, volunteer to help in one of the race specialties.
I’m inclined to encourage volunteering in Flagging & Communications (F&C), which gets you paired up with an experienced volunteer to be out at 1 of the 10 corner worker stations located along the course. If you are not that adventurous, there are volunteer spots in the Pit area call Grid, which gets the cars lined up to go out onto track, checks the drivers for proper safety gear, etc. Other options include Timing & Scoring, Sound Control monitoring, etc. These duties are all carried out by trained volunteers, and we need more help in just about all the areas. New volunteers are always encouraged, but by no means expected. If you just want to watch the races and look at the cars close up, that is fine. There’s no charge for either when you get to Registration and sign in before it closes at noon. Otherwise, you may need to pay a small track entrance fee after that.
The SCCA is the largest amateur racing car club in the nation and has been around since the ‘40’s. It sanctions auto cross, rally, and road racing at just about every public race track in the U.S. SCCA workers are primarily used in the vast majority of professional road races in the U.S. If you like youtube, please check out the following videos which give an idea of what the F&C side of things are about (these are from some other tracks; I recognize a lot of these folks from when I’ve worked at out of state tracks):

SCCA races 6 different groups, everything from open wheel Formula cars to GT-1 tube framed Corvettes, Mustangs, Porsches, and everything in between. There are production car classes with all brands of domestic and international (regular sport cars with a roll cage). Speeds on the main straight can get over 150 mph. It is an exciting experience out at a turn station, the second best seat with the exception of the driving seat. 25 min practice / qualifying sessions are held in the morning and then each group has a 25 minute race in the afternoon. There are cars on track about 75% of the time, so it does not get boring!
We provide the volunteers with lunch each day and a Fri and Sat nite party social. This year it's beverages and snacks at the track Fri evening after the cars are finished, then for Saturday night it’s a party at the Plaza Hotel in College Station. Also, volunteers are provided with a gas card for each day (two $25 cards for the Friday) of participation.
Here’s a link to a satellite view of TWS to show you what a great track it is:

You can see the road course wind around inside of the old NASCAR oval and out the backside to create a 2.9 mile road course. Some NASCAR teams have been using the banked oval portion of the track for off season testing, SCCA may return to utilizing this portion of the track in the future, stay tuned for the next seasons plans. Check out the link to the TWS website fact page, the track’s 40 year history is significant: http://www.texasworldspeedway.com/in...p?action=about
I hope you are able to come out to TWS, and I look forward to meeting you. If you think you can make it, please contact me and I can answer any questions and provide more info.
Best regards,
