Jeff, i have questions about the cat protection and cooking it that i am concerned with.

i would guestimate that EGT is highest in the highest part of the torque band, approx 4500-6500rpms. that said, i will only have the car with the AP installed for 3 months before i go to Honduras for a year, during which time my mother will be driving the car weekends only.

Now for 3 months i WILL hammer the car, mom wont for the next year after. I'm a bit stuck between getting rid of the cat now(which my parents will hate) and keeping the cat till i get the car back and move to Europe.

I'm not sure i'm ready for the noise of a catless rotay and i know my parents will hate me for it.... on the same note, i'm quite cautious about leaving the car with my parents and having the cat die out on them, for them to deal with. i dont like that idea...
I fully understand that you cannot predict anything with certainty or see the future, but what would you reccomend?

yeah thats ONE issue i have with losing the cat... since i cant see myself getting any of the other resonated pipes. the other is paying $470 for a resonated pipe....

i very hesitant to go that route as i leave Hawaii the 1st of august(roughly) which means all my stuff will be packed up and gone 3rd/4th week of July... i dont know if i would even get the pipe before that, if i went with Mazsports

Well I took a cruise. Back from the track it was 135.4 miles
The AP said 26.6 MPG avg. It was up and down hilly through the mountains then down hill to the beach. From 72mph to 70 and then the last 20 miles at 68mph.

When I filled up it was 22.968 MPG
Is anyone else experincing the AP to be off?

Or is it the gear ratio? 18x255x35 vs stock 45 height.

The AP reads the OBD-II mileage calculation, which is based on airflow.
I don't think it is particularly useful at all.

Are you saying we can't really even take the mpg calculations as a close estimate? They all look a little too much like Kia numbers not typical Rotary mpg's.

I'm bummed. Everything is working on my car now so I have nothing to do with it.

Hey Jeff, can you give me a crappy tune or break something in my map so I can wonder what's going on with my car and create a bunch of new threads on the forum?

Ah well. turboXS exhaust arrives on Tues, so that gives me something to look forward to.

I could suggest a stop at Safeway to pick up a few Idaho potatoes.
Those do wonders for your exhaust system.

I'm actually in the same boat. I am just left with a bunch of cosmetic things that I must address, but my car's function is where I always wanted it to be, so I am a bit anxious.

AFR reads way to high

I just got my Cobb a couple of weeks ago and am very confused. I have an 05 GT that is nearly bone-stock, just a K&N filter in the stock airbox. About 13k miles on the car mostly highway or rural, (yes, I don't get nearly enough time to just drive).

I installed it with the Cobb map first and didn't really have time to check anything, but it seemed happy enough.

I got the MazdaManiac maps and went through the procedure. Car did not need any additional trim, it was right near zero on the STFT. I did notice at idle the STFT seemed to drift +/- 3 at times. Normal driving saw the STFT bound around a bit more than expected, +/- 6-8, particularly on a shift. Seemed odd, but nothing I was too worried about. I started driving it and acceleration did not seem completely smooth. I thought this was probably just paranoia. I checked the AFR and it read 14 at ~5k and drifted close to 15 around 7500. This seemed bad so I quit messing around.

I switched back to the Cobb map and the AFR read a little higher than that, getting well over 15.

I've switched back the the stock style map, but haven't had a chance to check the readings yet.

I don't know whether to suspect the maps or a problem with more car. Since I'm not seeing anybody else reading so lean, I'm most suspicious of the car. I'm thinking I could take it to the dealer, but I'm not sure how to start the sentence. "I bought a computer reflash unit and have been reading lean on my AFR...." My dealer kinda sucks so I wouldn't expect that conversation to go well.

Has anybody else seen this? I searched and didn't see anybody else describe this, but it is a long thread.

Thanks

I have a few questions about the AP that have not been asked yet.

1) My AFR is in the mid 13's @ 6500 - 7,000 rpm. Jeff has sent me a few new maps but has not been able to solve it yet. Can I take my car to a local Cobb authorized tuner and have them dyno tune my car with the MazdaManaic maps or are they locked?

2) Once my AFR are in the high 11's low 12's is it safe to increase the boost? Will the PCM calculate the increase and add more fuel?

Once again, YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING THE DIRECTIONS!!

Do not even bother to look at the STFT again after the initial start up. DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT LOOKING AT IT.

What does it say at the bottom of the instructions?

Not even close. Look up "AxialFlow".

You do realize it is the weekend?
Do I get any time where I am not everyone's personal bitch?
Really.

I know the tone of this e-mail is anything but nice, but you people are unbelievably self-centered at times.
What other company gives you 24/7 personal tuning information?
Even when you wont read the instructions?!?!?

Yes, they have been asked.

Yes. The calibration will work right up until you run out of fuel.

You might want to stick with the process a bit longer.

Considering it takes dozens of tweaks to tune a car I can actually sit in, a few weeks of iterations over the internet should not seem like a major commitment on the part of the owner.
It took weeks of hands-on time to get my own setup right. Think how long MYSQL was at it.

You guys need some patience because mine is wearing thin.

I can understand why you feel that way. The amount of people emailing you for new maps must be insane!

Something has gotta change or you will wear yourself out!

Besides a minor tweak for the open loop cruising map, every single other issue I've had with the accessport was due to non-accessport reasons. The too-rich-afr situation was caused by sub-par intake setup. The bogging issue at mid-high rpms was caused by ignition coils.

This situation is kinda like doing tech support.

"My computer isn't working!"

"What are the symptoms?"

"I donno. It doesn't work"

... hours later ....

"Did you plug it into the wall?"

"Oh, I have to plug it in? I thought it ran on batteries."

No Prob.

My Bad, I forgot it was even Sunday. I've been working the weekend shift for about 2 years now so my weekend has turned into Tuesday-Wednesday.

I sent you the datalog the first time about 2 weeks ago, but I didn't put a good subject line in it and it probably got skipped over. I just looked back at it 2 days ago and realized what I did I was trying to kiss a little butt and get moved up on the list with the new email.

If I mailed out the mini keg tomorrow you would have it just in time for next weekend

I can understand why Jeff wants to lock his maps.

What we really need is "open source" base maps so that we can get them tuned in person at our local Cobb authorized tuners.

There already is an "open-source". Its called a base map and every RX-8 comes with one.

Send a check - it'll save you $20!

I've sold about a dozen to 4-port folks, but only a few of them have been FI.
