Canadians No-Go?

Ok, as of about an hour ago, I didn't receive any tunes yet so I decided to try the stock Cobb tune. I plugged this thing in with the car off and on just key on etc. unplugged it, plugged it back in and tried every combination. It gives the same error that it can not communicate with my vehicle. So unless I'm doing something wrong, I'm going to guess it wont work on Canadian cars.

So I guess I have to find a USA PCM? Does anyone know if it's this thing on ebay?:

Thanks.

****!

Yes, that is what you will need to replace. Just make sure you get the same model year. There is a 2006 and 2007 PCM for sale on ebay for under $300. I need to find a 2005 version. Grrr! Welcome to ******* Canada. With my luck the USDM pcm wont work on Canadian models either!

I did a little searching and I find this.

The ECU itself is useless without the immobilizer halo and other security pieces
Is this true?

****, what a pita. so i need a 2004 and it still might not work? I think Cobb needs to change all that "north american models only" to USA models only.

If all we need is a new PCM I can handle that.

If it becomes more complicated, I might just ditch the whole idea.

According to the RB flash:

This flash service is performed on YOUR PCM unit. Each RX-8 PCM unit has been programmed for each specific chassis and is intended to communicate with the security “immobilization” system. For this reason we do not offer a PCM “trade-in” service, we MUST flash the PCM unit for your car. (The immobilization information is retained during the Racing Beat flash and is not overwritten.)

I wonder if the Cobb overwrites the immobilization info, then wouldn't that mean that if we got a US pcm, and flashed it, then it would work?

I don't know if I would be giving up so soon.

I still have the communications error issue popup once in a while, and I have a pcm that the unit was designed to talk to. I made a thread on the cobb forum about it:

http://forums.cobbtuning.com/forums/...ad.php?t=39433

It's intermittent, maybe my AP is funky.

Why would the Canadian cars have a different PCM than the American ones? That wouldn't make much sense as they both have the same flashes.

You can use an Access port on a Canadian WRX/STI...

According to RB, they can only 'void out' the immobilizer bit on '04 ECUs. So that's the only 'other' ECU you could put in your car and have it work, if they reflash it. If Cobb can do it other years, good for them, but better ask as that's the only way you're going to use an alternate ECU.

So how much does the immobilization system cost?

Is this even doable?

Just think how I felt during my testing when the AP did that while in the process of flashing the ECU! Thankfully, all went ok after an AP firmware upgrade.

It's not a thing by itself. It's something that can be done (turn off the bit) when you get the RB '04 race flash.

This is strange.

So the new USDM PCM would need to have a RB race flash in order to work?

Couldn't you get the Immobilizer system activated again by having the dealer reflash the computer?

Maybe it's getting confused about the French language.

No just kidding.

Just wait a little I'm sure someone can solve this issue.

Did you tell the unit you are a USA car?

Is there a thread of list that gonna be made for noobs, maybe in the intro of this forum about what mods can be tweaked with maps made for the AP. I was suprised that the TPMS settings could be played with, could be, I know Trey isn`t from the legal point. But still, pretty awesome.

yes, ****UNLESS**** some other flash tool can do the same thing. It's a SOFTWARE BIT that can be on or off, so SOMETHING (Cobb, efidud, RB, or whatever) that can FLASH IT (the bit) has to finger it. Make sense? I just don't know which of the other tools can do it because I don't have them.

yeah I saw that ,but with mine, i never got it to communicate even once. and i spent quite a few minutes trying every such way. I noticed that when I opened the box and looked at the obdII/usb adapter thing that one of the pins looked like it was sticking out more than the rest but i doubt that has anything to do with it. i also posted my problem on the cobb forums.

That's exactly why I was so sure it'd work, because the canadian subies work and they advertised 'north american cars'. I'm sure there will be a fix soon so I'm just gonna keep mine and patiently wait for my tunes to come in the mail. I'll go fiddle with this thing some more today.

I don't know if this is true with the AP, but many connectors have the ground pin sticking out further so it connects before any of the other pins.
