You and ...everyone else.

I'm in Maryland and there is a local AccessPORT super-tuner who handles a lot of the major STi and Evo tuning here. I know a guy who works in my same building who owns the shop car (a sponsored 550 whp Time-Attack STi) who introduced me to the owner and he said he would be happy to tune a FI RX8 but his shop will not do any install work on the cars because they are too "fragile". That means I have to get the turbo kit installed somewhere else and either tow it over to the shop to get it properly tuned without even knowing if the turbo kit is working or... What I was hoping is to get the base FI maps from Jeff so that after the install the car can at least be started and run low boost to make sure everything is solid with no leaks etc before I take it from the install shop to the tuning shop. Unlike 99% of people I'm not even asking Jeff for a custom map at this point, I just want a base map so I can start my FI car without exploding it.

Once again - an FI-ed car can be started up and drvien out of boost without a new map. So if you have an installed doing your turbo they can leak test it and everything.

I cant wait for my tune.... but as from someone else... I can wait... 1 reason... the tune will be correct and my engine wont blow up in a couple of days....

All I can hope for is that I get my tune soon because Im more worried about saving than power... right now i only get 15 mpg tops and its killing me....

blackenedwings,

where in Maryland is this tuner you're talking about? I'm the DC area and it looks like I'll have to pay for someone to tune my 8.

The AccessPORT guy I'm talking to about dyno tuning the car is Hill McCarty at Agile Automotive (http://www.agileauto.com/index.php). He isn't cheap, but he has a very good reputation amongst the Subaru crowd. I've discussed tuning the RX8 and he said he is definitely willing to do it, but I don't know how much experience he has with rotaries. Considering I'm not going for a razor edge tune eeking every last whp out of the car, I think his considerable experience should be enough to get a conservative tune which will be safe for the car.

Now because his shop will not do any install work on RX8s at all, I have to go to a different shop for the turbo installation because I'm not trying to do a turbo install on jackstands outside in Maryland winter... it could be 80 degrees and sunny or raining hail the size of golfballs... no way to know ahead of time. For the installation I'm looking at JE Import Performance (http://www.jeimportperformance.com/) which I've heard some positive things about from local folks. I'm going to consult with them about the install, and if I'm confident they can do it thats probably where it will go. If not, then PF Supercars is also on my list. It's much farther away from me, but they have a long history of dealing with rotaries.

Well - we are a "no go" for this weekend. Our boy had a bad O2 sensor (we think)... but Faille got to look at the Cobb Tuner software and he is pretty postitive it will work with Baseline no problems.... so as soon as we get some good logs then we will be back at it.

Big thanks to Justin (J.Cab) for letting us play with his car; hopefully we can get his issues resolved soon.

Thumbs down

Nope, haven't received anything from MM...

I officially hit 80 days tonight at midnight since I sent my data to MM. This has to be by far the worst buying experience EVER for me. I've sent numerous emails along with my data twice already. I posted in the good guy / bad guy thread "Worse service ever: Mazda Maniac" my experience with him. Maybe that will get his attention...sorry MM, you left me no choice. I haven't heard from you via email, pm or any other means of communication.

To be honest the only thing that has put me off buying an AP is the waiting for maps. I realize that its more of a hobby and complimentary service MM does.. but that is really what breaks the deal for me. The AP was on my mod list way before any exterior mod I've done after my exhaust.

For waiting, you sir are a much smarter man than I. If you're staying NA, save your money. If you're NA moving to FI (like me), save your money. If you enjoy feeling like an *** waiting for crumbs to fall off MMs table, then the AP from MM is a worthy investment.

Let's see September, October, November...65 days for me and no response/no map.

I'm setting a target of Jan 09 and then I'm giving up on the AP and moving on.

Here's an idea. Let's help MM and potential AP buyers by making an AP list. Please adjust the rankings as necessary.

The format:
ranking, name, days in, short comment (eg response from MM/no response from MM)

1) IronLu, 80+
2) DynamicDookie, 65+, no response from MM

I would like to point out that while I understand many of you are waiting for calibrations for air/fuel, the benifits of the AP include extending the life of your motor through improved cooling, oil metereing increases etc. These adjustments are able to be made using the accesstuner software and won't endanger your vehicle.

These items are included as part of the base calibrations which MazdaManiac provides with an AP purchase and come pre-loaded on the AP.

This is a device which, in my opinion, every RX8 owner that has an understanding of their car should own. I wouldn't hold out buying the AP.

Don't get me wrong, the AP is an awesome idea, but to me, without maps, changing when the fan kicks on and uping the omp are not worth $700.

Out of curiosity, did you buy an AP from MM and if so, does he respond to you?

Value is in the eye of the beholder I suppose. There's plenty of products for the RX8 I wouldn't take if you gave them to me so I understand your position.

I'm local to Phoenix and know MazdaManiac personally. I had my RX8 tuned at a Mazda Club dyno session we had a few months back.

Speaking as a webdesigner/developer I'm pretty sure that a lot of the "mess" in here would be non-existant if it was organized in a way so that people knew Jeff had their information and such. He wouldn't have to open his inbox and yell every time :P

For instance, all map requests had to be uploaded on a webpage where you create a user, log in, then send current map, graph of AFR and other information in a form. This would be put in a database, and Jeff would have a page that lists all pending map requests, if he's done with one he can mail it from the page, and just check it off the list. The users could log in and see their line in the queue.

If someone's got some php skill and some sparetime I'll help with the design bit

Seriously though, it's gotta be an annoying situation for Jeff too, and it probably doesn't help that there's 50 people he can't identify that asks where their map is.

I think because of the large scope of work needed to keep this tuning service rolling that some kind of automation will be necessary. We have people within the community that can provide solutions.

Well if someone is willing, I'd be able to help with the front-end stuff. (the stuff visible to the users in laymans terms).

Can you let him know I've waited 65+ days for a BASE CA map for the Greddy turbo, stock injectors/Mazsport cai and that if he could provide me with an update on when I could expect a BASE map....I'd be very grateful to both of you.

I'm trying to give everyone the benefit of the doubt here, because I was always extremely impressed with the service MM has provided. Mostly that he would do all the things he said and had been doing, essentially for free. (Yes, he "hooks" people into using his tunes to start, so that he could charge them if they needed work down the road, but even so, this was an extremely generous move on his part.

With that said, I think just a few calming words of explanation would be appropriate here....
