Since your from Cali, you will fell the power loss that you get at this high an altitude with a naturally asspirated car. It pulls great up here. I've been a few times through the mountains. The farthest Driven would be from Denver to New Castle .just drop it down a gear on the steep inclines and your cruising passed every 4 and 6 cyl. on the highway. Turbo it and you won't have and problem. My bros GN and Diesel just fly up those hills with no problem. If you have run your car down the quarter expect a 1.5-2 sec drop in time. My runs up here have been no better than 15.9 and I only got that once. Mostly I get 16.3 16.4. That's before my car got a new motor this past August. Wouldn't hold compression and now it's idleing rough. Gotta call the dealer on monday. My worst runs have been 17.9, bad take off and the car would not go ito second for nothing.

Spinbreakz 10-08-2007 12:50 PM

Damn!

I was thinking about getting a turbo'd subaru or audi before i move out there. Ill be in the mountains alot and when i drove my uncles audi allroad with the turbo, it had great pick up with the turbo. I think if you live in the mountains, you definetly need a turbo in your car. That way you have an equal stream of air going into each cylinder or what not. And you dont have to worry about the thin air and compression :)

Sleepy Buffalo 10-12-2007 12:58 AM

This is my first post! Normally i just read and get everyone's opinion on products, but your question about mountain driving made me speak up. Everything Crazy said about your car running slower at elevation is true. Coming from Cali you will feel like the car is slower, sorry but there is nothing you can do about that. However, I have a group of friends with a wide arrange of cars and here are some of the comments that they had to say about my 8.

Situation, rx8 vs. highly modded STi
Going uphill sucked don't want to talk about it. Going downhill different story altogether.
My friend had a hard time keeping up when it came to the corners. The only thing that kept him close was his power from the bigger turbo. He was right behind me as we started, but once we got to any turn, he had to hit the brakes hard. All I had to do was hold on tight and let the car speak for itself.

Situation rx8 vs. Crossfire
After changing the oil and washing both the cars, we went out for a drive. Hit the first turn, enough said. A couple of days later all my friend could say, was I wasn’t allowed to lead on anymore mountain drives. He said that once we hit the second turn, and everyone after that, we would enter into the turn and the 8 would just sit down and keep on accelerate where he had to slow down just to keep his line.

Situation rx8, rsx, audi a4 1.8T, mazdaspeed6, crossfire, AE86
My friends and I went on an aggressive mountain drive, and everyone of them said that they wouldn’t go unless I was in the back.

Every car and driver have their moment to shine. In a straight line I loose. It is my personal opinion, the 8 was built solely for the purposes of mountain driving. Nothing else can compare to the handling. As for snow, I have a fullsize blazer for that. Plus, they say this years winter will be rather mild.

Hope this helps some.

Greek Racer 8 10-12-2007 03:37 AM

^ I complete agree. The most fun your going to have in the 8 is in the mountains. I drove one of my buddies evos threw a few turns and it really didn't compare. (at the time he was hitting 13.5s on the quarter now he's hitting 12.7s) He has the power to pass you but not on the turns. Sea level the eight is an alright dragster but taking the turns hard and fast is alot more fun. But I still love to drag at Bandimere. Be careful going down hills you'll be going 55 and in a split second you could be nearing 10

What year is your car. Have you got a replacement engine yet?

Sleepy Buffalo 10-12-2007 01:40 PM

I have an 05 with 27K miles. I took it into the dealer but there was no need for a new engine...yet.

(i have the REVi, act prolight fly, Clutch Master stage 1 clutch, and RP short shifter)

Greek Racer 8 10-12-2007 06:28 PM

wow you have more miles than me. I have an 04. Needed a new motor this past August at 24,000 miles. I think I have like 25,500 now 1,500 on the new motor and it has high idle. I also have an ACT prolite flywheel but not installed yet. My bros house burnt down so now I have no access to a lift and tools. ACT clutch was put in when the new motor went in. Be carful the dealers try to blame bad engines on the after market intake. Atually they try to blame everything on it. And AM exhaust.

Sleepy Buffalo 10-14-2007 01:39 PM

Where do you go for your work. I have been working with Burt Mazda over on Arapahoe and 25 for my warranty work. The service manager’s name is Ed. I took my rx in after i replaced my gear oil and 2nd and 5th started to grind. After it was all said and done i got a new transmission sent and put in under warranty. During the initial conversation with ed, i mentioned that since he had the transmission out anyway, he could swap out my flywheel with an aftermarket one. I needed to replace my clutch as well, so I asked and he said that he would install what ever clutch I wanted. He can’t warranty the clutch anyway, even if it was from Mazda. The total cost to me was for the one hour of additional shop time for the tech to swap out flywheels.

Greek Racer 8 10-14-2007 03:40 PM

I go to Lakewood Mazda. It's the closest and used to have the best service.
Come on over to ColoradoMazdaClub.com and join the forums there. meet alot more Mazda owners than here. If your not already there.

Frynge 10-16-2007 01:36 PM

the mountains... ooohhh I love the mountains in this 8. buffalo has it right, the 8 is totally made for the corners... it's not going to be beaten if it has a decent driver behind the wheel that can do more than go in a straight line. :)

it's not the greatest car, no, but it's definitely under-rated.

gotrotary 11-05-2007 10:52 AM

wow.. i don't own my rx-8 anymore but its good to see that people are finally posting on here.. when i was around this club was dead!

I take my 8 to Burt on Arapahoe as well. My work place is across the street up from McDonalds. They have been pretty good so far. My 8 is an 04 AT and has 10 K on it. Had a CEL, and car was dead once so they replaced the plugs, new battery and a stronger starter. Works fine so far after those changes. I just get my oil changes there. I leave it in the garage for the winter because I don't like the front getting sand blasted from the road sand during and after snows and then the chips in the windshield so it sits mostly until the streets are cleaned. It has the summer tires on it so its useless in snow anyway. I thought about snow tires but that's all I have done it think about it. Still a good car I think.

yeah...Rx8club.com scared a lot of people away with the constant "search" replies and things of that nature...among other problems. Check out www.coloradomazdaclub.com. A much friendlier environment.

I still like this site when I am looking for information or messed up threads, I'm just saying the other place is friendlier.

huzer21 06-27-2008 02:49 PM

Yup...feel free to check us out at Colorado Mazda Club. We had an RX8 meet back in April, and had 10 RX-8s show up (and a couple of RX-7s). I'd love to get some more RX8 folks on the local forums. If nothing more, keep an eye on the meets and stop by. We are averaging a couple of different meets per month. If we could get another 8 meet together, that would be great.

Check out this thread for some pics of the last RX8 meet: https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-multimedia-photo-gallery-6/colorado-rx-8-meet-144494/

Activity! Thanks, I'll check out the link.

Greek Racer 8 07-01-2008 08:17 PM

Yup hope on over to CMZC. We all mainly just use this site as a tool. Just to get info from and that's about it. Been very useful and helpful.....the site not the people.

huzer21 07-07-2008 10:32 AM

We're looking at August 23rd (tentatively) as the next RX8/rotary meet in Colorado. Check out the thread at Colorado Mazda Club. We'd really like to get some new folks out at this meet! If you've got any input, post here or in the thread link I posted. We had 10 of us at the last meet, let's get more!!

lancer 07-10-2008 04:31 PM

I will come to the meet, let me know or email me the info(phamhoangloi@yahoo.com)
I am new to this website too, so... I don't know much about it. :spank: :banghead: :icon_no2: :uhh:

Hey Greek, are you running boost? Is anyone boosted here in Colorado, specifically the Denver area?

I keep searching for a tuner, or a rotary specialist somewhere in Denver, but the only thing I found was "Rotary Specialists" (rotaryspecialists.com) and it seems like they're out of business, their phone number is not in serivce either.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sadly not yet no. I will one day though. There is a guy in the springs we did the greddy install with. UPP down in the Springs will tune rotaries that's who tuned his with the AP. Or you can try SR-tunning. I know that Steve kahn is supposed to be here sometie in August and and the spring next year doing some tunning. Last time he was here he was at Import Sports. They are in Denver and may Tune rotaries. Don't know. http://importsports.net/home.htm

I am checking on buying snow tires for my 04 RX auto with 18 '' wheels. I keep seeing that Blizzaks are one way to go. What about the wheel sensors? Do they come off or will they stay on when the new snows are mounted on the wheels?

Thanks again. This is my first time to put snows on the RX and I hear lots of folks say the car is good in the snow with good snow tires or all seasons.

DarthRX8 08-18-2008 06:23 PM

I am not sure bout the snow tires. I drive my 8 in the winter without them :Eyecrazy:

I have always been fine without them as long as I don't get crazy and its not more than a few inches.

Tayninh 08-18-2008 09:30 PM

I hear if you keep the summer soft tires the RX is basically useless in any sort of snow accumulation. I think one of us CO guys used snows and it was the best. I am not sure to go either snows or all seasons for the littleton area. I drive to around the Denver Tech center C470 route each day. I have never had the RX out in snow until this year. I only have about 11,000 on it with the original soft summer tires OEM stuff on it. I have the touring 18 inch wheels. This winter I don't have a choice so the car needs to be equipped with snows or All Season. Not sure which yet.

JRichter 08-19-2008 09:50 AM

I was able to get around fine (on a daily basis) the last two winters with all-seasons (Khumo ASX's) in the Colorado Springs area. Ground clearance/ice on up slopes were the biggest issues but most of the major roads are plowed here regularly and if you pick the right roads you can manage.

Tayninh 08-19-2008 10:16 AM

Ok, so now I need to make a decision. I have 11K on the summer tires but they seem to be ok so far although I believe their life ends at 20K. If I get Firestone snows then that means when the snows are gone, I have t o switch back to the summer tires which are noisy. Or go to all season tires and have four used summer tires to keep around but for what I don't know. They would most likely go another 5 k perhaps. Did you use the Rack to get your tires or did you use the local discount tire stores?

JRichter 08-19-2008 04:19 PM

I used Discount Tire back when I got mine out of convenience as I was moving at the time. Having moved from Texas a couple of years ago, I have no experience w/ snow tires and was worried about driving around w/ them throughout the season when the roads were dry and I was driving my car hard. This might not be a problem with modern snow tires but I'm not sure and haven't looked into it. I also didn't want to come up w/ an extra set of wheels and didn't want to have to swap the different tires to the wheels I had. I figured all-seasons would be the best compromise and managed pretty good on those. I don't think I ever strayed from my area or Denver area throughout both the winters I've lived here except for a vacation trip during December so not sure how the car would manage in the mountains or heavier snow areas.

I also found the OEM summer tires that came w/ my car (Bridgestone Potenza's) were not even useful in hot central Texas when the streets were wet, slick, or greasy at all for the most part and I wore them out at around 10k miles (gravel roads probably helped do them in) so that and knowing I was moving to CO is what convinced me to get the all-seasons. I couldn't imagine how the car would get around up here w/ those still on (especially w/ me at the wheel :) ).

Also, if you would be putting the snow tires on the stock 18" wheels, then you should be able to keep the tire pressure monitoring system in tack or some of the aftermarket wheels accept the TPMS sensors also.

huzer21 08-19-2008 04:41 PM

I've got summer tires on my RX8. Last year was my first winter with the car, and I might have left it parked 4 or 5 times. Even then, the main reason is that my work parking lot is a steep decline, and I was worried about if being unplowed and sliding into the metal gate.

I will say that even after driving RWD cars growing up in northern NY, the RX8 can be a little interesting to drive during the winter months. I've toyed with the idea of dedicated winter tires on separate wheels, but for the cost, I'd rather just get a beater.

As far as where to get tires, Discount Tire matches prices (I bought my Kumho Ecstas for my Mazda6 there). Be sure to check the prices on Discount Tire Direct as well, and have the local store match those. I've seen good deals there, as well.

Tayninh 08-19-2008 04:44 PM

Yeah I guess I'm lucky with the OEM tires so far. I took the car to Wisconsin a year ago and that's the last time I take it with the touring sports suspension. It was a bit bumpy and noisy as all get out. When I put the numbers on paper I see its better to go all season otherwise I am stuck with buying two sets of tires in one year which makes it a bit expensive for 18 inch wheels low profile. I'll just need to look around for the best all around all season tires. Not sure Firestone is it just yet. Snows are soft rubber much like the summer OEM tires and so if you leave them on during the summer, you'll wear them out real fast. I see some buy two sets of wheels, new sensors so to have tires for both seasons. That's more than what I want to put out so I guess I'll go All season then. I keep seeing this car is excellent in the snow with good tires so I guess I'll find out this winter then. Seems the Springs area gets a good amount of snow than up here in Littleton area.

r-enzyme 08-20-2008 06:46 PM

I've been using the Goodyear Eagle F1 All-Seasons (225 45ZR) for a good year now and they are great in snow, ice, rain, whatever. No complaints.

Tayninh 08-20-2008 08:41 PM

That sounds like a good tire. I'll check it out

doccable 09-04-2008 09:22 PM

For what it's worth, I put a set of Pirelli P-Zero Neros on mine a couple of years ago, and although I do my best to avoid winter driving conditions, the few times I had to drive in the snow, these things performed perfectly.

I haven't seen that and...wow, that's frightening.

Ok I just received a quote from Firestone for All Season tires on the RX auto 18" wheels. Bridgestone UNI-T AQ II Potenza RD 960AS pole Pos 225/45R18 40K mile limited warranty. Mount tires, balance, road hazard protection, new stems tire disposal. Bottom line is $1,001.03 The tires are $191.49 each and that's their discount! ouch. What does anyone think? I have not tried discount tire yet or anyone else.
