So let me know if anyone wants to meet up today.

~Baby Boy~ 05-18-2008 03:27 PM

Roxas what color 8 do you got?

Jethro Tull 05-18-2008 05:57 PM

I'm taking the last week of May off, so I could probably squeeze in a cruise sometime during that time. In the meantime I'm just swamped at work and home. Remodeling this summer but need to take care of a bunch of repair/maintainence issues first. Hell, a car isn't a real money pit compared to a house!

Put 5 gallons in the tank this morning, and a dose of premix. I've noticed that since I started premixing, I'm getting a little more carbon on my chrome exhaust tips. Not much, but enough to notice. Hmmm...

RoXas585 05-18-2008 08:34 PM

I have a Nordic Green with 20" aftermarket rims. Why do you ask?

bose 05-19-2008 09:46 AM

This weekend was not a great one for me, just bad times so there wasn't time for it, I'm totally pissed about it. But things needed straitening out so whatever.

And Holy BJezuz 20" rims? I suggest, get rid of those boat anchors and get some lighter wheels and you'll have better acceleration and depending on what you go with better handling.

RoXas585 05-19-2008 11:05 AM

LOL yeah a have to agree with you on the rims bose. I didnt actually buy them. The dealership that I bought it from put them on before I bought it. I do need to look into a set of 18"s.

bose 05-19-2008 11:36 AM

Ah, that was nice of them hell you could probably sell those and buy a new set strait up.

smartyfool 05-20-2008 04:59 AM

Welcome smartyfool!

I don't have a hard time with my 8 in snow- because I don't drive it. It spends the winter parked in my garage while I drive an Explorer. But a lot of other local 8 owners drive their cars year-round. For me it's not a handling thing- I just don't want to expose my car to road salt and sand. I ruined an RX-7 doing that here years ago. Also, I'm Mr. Stock. I have an '07 that I bought last year BN and so far have only added clear corners, and front and rear rotary accents, plus I bought the Mazda cover and front mask. This year I'm going to add eyelids, fender strakes, and front-and-rear splash guards. No performance mods until my extended warranty is expired in a few more years. But several locals are into mods and I'm sure they'll be posting soon. Bose is always looking for more hp, and DariusDemon has an aftermarket breather, that I'm aware of.
I have to admit that I'm interested in the Cobb Accessport and researching that one now- a possible purchase if it doesn't affect my warranty.

If we can get a cruise or meet going, you must join us! What are the details of your 8?

bose 05-20-2008 11:53 AM

Good to see you found the club smartyfool. Feel free to post any questions you have in either this or the other Utah thread. Also where are you in Utah? And what are the details on your car, year, color, mileage, any mods

Winter and the 8 are not best friends, if your like me and have no second car to beat up you'll need a good set of snowtires to manage. As far as oil goes I use castrol gtx 5-w20 right now but since it's getting hotter I'm going to switch to a heavier weight, need to do a bit of research before I do though.

As for mods there are alot of little ones you can do. What are your goals? More power, handling? Let me know and I will help steer you, but I don't have all the answers.

And finally Jethro, the Cobb accessport is not detecable as long as you reflash back to stock, I would say almost no chance they could tell you flashed it. And I only say almost cause I'm not 100% more like 99% just cause the way it works, it's like an ninja, no trace of it once it's gone.

Jethro Tull 05-20-2008 12:08 PM

I got the impression you leave it attached, so you could monitor certain parameters in real-time. But I guess you're right- nothing to prevent you from restoring the factory flashes before taking it in to Mazda...

bose 05-20-2008 03:45 PM

You are correct that you can use it to monitor many realtime things, but it doesn't need to be hook up to do the job, all it does is take factory flash and store it to it's internal memory, then puts it's map in place of the stock flash. Swap them as much as you like. (within reason)

Jethro Tull 05-21-2008 10:22 AM

Interesting... Have you bought one?

bose 05-21-2008 11:29 AM

Have not, my money is all tied up right now until my wheels and tires get here, then I want to do the mazsport 5speed conversion. (damned 4th gear synchro) But all my buddies with subaru's have them and they work the same.

Jethro Tull 05-21-2008 04:41 PM

I'm getting eyelids, strakes, and splash guards this summer...just might have to spring for the Cobb AP in August or Sept...

smartyfool 05-28-2008 01:36 AM

thanks for all the reply guys, i am in Pleasant Grove here, a silver 05, with all the aero package. I guess i have to stick with this car since i cant afford another ( nor the space) but i think a lil zaino once a while helps a lot with the paint.

Have you guys done any intakes for the car ? If so , what brand do you guys recommend ? RB one is just way too exp.... $650 :(

Jethro Tull 05-28-2008 02:47 AM

Check out DariusDemon's car. He has a custom intake.

Shawna_ 05-28-2008 09:10 AM

Hey Smarty,
I think I've seen you around town. I am in orem and have a pearl white Shinka.
not to many of us around here. I know the other PG dweller is a black one that belongs to the survivour winner of last year. I've only saw him once though. Well enjoy SEE YA AROUND!!
ZoomZoom

bose 05-28-2008 04:12 PM

I have had two intakes, right now I have the Racing Beat and last I had the AEM/mazdaspeed. In my opinion the AEM is not very good period, only cool thing is that it's LOUD AS HELL and does nothing for performance. The Racing Beat intake and duct it what I have now and I love it. Not annoying good throttle response and such. Any questions let me know. PM me or whatever.

smartyfool 05-28-2008 11:29 PM

maybe i should really save up and get the RB ones....

650 bucks...

bose 05-29-2008 09:47 AM

I should probably mention I got mine used, actually traded a guy my AEM for it, otherwise I was going to go with the k&n typhoon. Look in the for sale section on this site also check ebay. who knows maybe you can find one cheap.

Jethro Tull 05-30-2008 12:55 AM

Anybody got time for a drive this weekend? We should do this while we can still afford the gas!

bose 05-30-2008 09:20 AM

im up for it. canyon run or maybe out to miller and we could check out the superbikes maybe, kinda pricey though.

Klone 05-30-2008 09:21 AM

Like Bose said the Accessport does not need to be connected at all times. Just to flash the computer. Once the flash is complete you can disconnect it and store it, unless you want to monitor any of the real time parameters of the car. I have one for my WRX and it is great. Welcome to Utah and enjoy the 8.

RoXas585 05-30-2008 08:12 PM

I would be down for a drive, but sadly my 8 is in the shop....again. I got a call from the repair place and they said the catalytic converter is broken and that is was going to cost $1600!!! :banghead:

I am beginning to think the world hates me. :(

RoXas585 05-30-2008 08:47 PM

After talking with DariusDemon, he suggested replacing the entire exhaust system. After doing a quick search (I'm at work) the price deffinitely seems to be better for an entire aftermarket exhaust vs the cat from the dealership. Anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for? ex. brand, type, specifications..

I dont really know anything about this so any help would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks once again to you all!

Xiphoid 05-30-2008 08:51 PM

If you decide on getting an oem cat I can sell you mine for $150

bose 05-31-2008 12:15 PM

It depends on what kind of sound you are looking for. There's a bunch out there now. try looking on youtube for vids of different exhausts. The greddy sp2 is one of the quieter ones around I know, borla's one of the loudest.

Jethro Tull 05-31-2008 04:29 PM

Any performance difference between manufacturers, or are they all about the same? Does it really boil down to just a sound difference for your money?

RoXas585 06-01-2008 05:48 PM

Hey everyone I'm sorry if I am beginning to sound like a broken record always asking for help, but I am confused about the catalytic converter problem I have been having.

Recap: I need a new Catalytic Converter. The OEM one from the dealer is $1400. I was under the assumption that I could buy a new aftermarket exhaust system and they come with a new catalytic converter. I believe I was wrong in that assumption. I was looking at getting the Borla cat back system but I noticed that it connects at the catalytic converter and does not come with one.

My question is do I need to get a replacement catalytic converter? If I were to buy an aftermarket exhaust system, are there any that come with the catalytic converter or a similar pipe that replaces the catalytic converter? I read all through the Exhausts page and there wasn't any info on what I need. I know there are a couple of people on the Utah board that have aftermarket exhausts and I was hoping I could find some answers from you.

THANK YOU SO MUCH! You guys are awesome and I appreciate all the help you have given me.

PS Xiphoid, if it turns out I do need a catalytic converter, I will probably take you up on that.

MILITARYMAN 06-01-2008 08:36 PM

You can hollow it out and it will work but you need to keep your resinator on for back pressure the rotory needs back pressure

RoXas585 06-01-2008 10:56 PM

After spending all day reading different posts I figured out that I should get a high flow cat. I noticed from the signatures that bose and Xiphoid have Rotary Performance cats. How are these working for you? Do you have any problems passing emissions? That is my biggest concern purchasing this.

I guess there is also one available from rx7store.net. If anyone here has this or has experience with it, please let me know what you think of it!

bose 06-02-2008 11:06 AM

Most after market exhausts you see being sold are 'cat-back' exhaust, which do not include a cat pipe, you would have to buy a seperate 'cat, or race pipe' as some companies call it. I have the Rp as you noticed, I haven't had to do emissions testing so not sure, but I haven't had a check engine light related to it so as far as I can tell it does it's job. With High flow cats you should have no problem.

Shouldn't your cat be covered under the emissions warranty? I thought it was and 80,000 mi. thing, not sure but I would look into it.

RoXas585 06-02-2008 11:23 AM

Thank you so much for the info bose. You are correct about the warranty being 80000 miles, however my car has 88000, so i just missed it. where did you get the RP high flow cat? I checked on the Rotary Performance website and it only has the Super Cat Midpipe. Is this the same as yours? Do they make it still? I guess there is also a high flow cat on rx7store.net, but I didn't know how the quality was on that one.

bose 06-02-2008 11:52 AM

Ah I see, I actually bought mine used, but he got it from rx7store.com. The one they sell is the RP supercat, they have revised it a bit but all in all it's the same but improved. So weather you go through rx7store or rotary performance it's the same one just get the one that's cheaper.

And don't worry about the questions. That's what this place is for :)

Jethro Tull 06-03-2008 12:37 AM

OK people, EVERYONE needs to read this thread:

https://www.rx8club.com/rx-8-discussion-3/8-years-100-000-mi-extended-warranty-147287/

It's for REAL, I got my paperwork from Mazda today!

bose 06-03-2008 09:30 AM

I got mine last night, I wonder if this means they never fully voided my warranty? Not sure what this means for me but it's still very cool of MNAO to extend a hand to us Rotarians.

It's for REAL, I got my paperwork from Mazda today!

so it applies to everyone or do you have to get a letter from the dealership that says you get it? and is it if you bought it from a dealership? i got mine from bountiful mazda

Jethro Tull 06-04-2008 10:07 AM

It applies to every RX-8 made to date, regardless if you bought it new or used.

The packet contains a form for getting reimbursed for engine core expenses already spent, and an outline of the warranty extension. That's the really nice thing about this extension- if you've already spent money on core repairs (and kept your receipts), you will get reimbursed by Mazda.

Even if you didn't get a packet in the mail, your 8 should still be covered.

The packet is sent from Mazda corporate offices, not the dealers.

DariusDemon 06-04-2008 10:21 AM

yup i just got my packet in the mail yesterday> I thinks that's pretty darn cool ;)

RoXas585 06-05-2008 12:29 AM

Havent got mine yet and I dont know if I will due to me only owning my car for a little over 2 months now. I still think that is awesome information. :)

bose 06-05-2008 10:14 AM

roxas you may need to call mazda north america and make sure you are the registered owner in their system. Make sure you have your vin number and just I want to update ownership on this vehicle.

All in all a spot on move by Mazda.

rx8snowboard 06-07-2008 10:43 AM

bose 06-08-2008 10:40 AM

110th and 13th E. I am a daily driver so you should see me around:lol2: I think we should have a meet this weekend as well.

seriouscoin1 06-08-2008 04:20 PM

welcome rx8snowboard! You guys rcv. a warranty ext. in the mail? It says that the warranty is extended to 8 yrs. 100k miles. Let me know if you guys got that.

RoXas585 06-08-2008 05:47 PM

Hey rx8snowboard. Im pretty sure I have driven by you a couple of times. I live really close to you: 11400 S 1300 E. I would totally be down for a ride this weekend. Got nothing else going on.

I did end up ordering the RP high flow cat. I am hoping to have it in the next day or two. I am a car noob, but I really want to install this myself (more of a self accomplishment thing.) Has anyone done this before and could give me some pointers or help? I read that it was a fairly simple bolt on part, but I am not sure.

Also with my 8 having 80k+ miles on it and having recently bought it (not knowing how well it was kept,) I was wondering if I should take it to a dealer and have them do a tune up on it. Does this sound like a good thing to do?
