I traded in my 350Z for the RX-8... I had the Z for 11 months. At first, I really enjoyed the car, but after a while, I could see the obvious flaws in it's design/materials.

The heat from the summer sun started curling out the plastic peice underneath the passenger side's dashboard. I had the Lemans Sunset orange; my front bumper looked like a connect the dots book. The smallest pebble or road debris would chip the bumper. The sewing on the driver's seat started unraveling... I had the car for 11 months! There's no reason why it should be doing that already...

Believe me, there is no competition between the RX-8 and the 350Z...

JivenMushu 01-23-2004 12:43 PM

PS The paint on the Cobra was awesome! I had to take a couple pictures of that. I loved it!

Landon_Starr 01-28-2004 01:46 PM

I finally broke down, I went and purchased the strakes yesterday. :( I'm so weak. Paid $200 from Murray (there seem to be cheaper prices, but after shipping this is about what the cost equates to).

DragonStar4681 01-28-2004 01:53 PM

Landon,
sorry for the break down. give me a month and i bet im right there with ya.

Landon_Starr 01-28-2004 03:16 PM

They just look SOOOOO cool. :)

Canz sells the exhaust finishers for 152....so that'll be where I get those.

im from utah. i ended up buying from freeway in ogden (even though i live in west jordan) as they gave me no hassle and the best deal.

unfortunately my car is in the shop at bountiful mazda. last weekend i went to vegas and when i came back on sunday night it was snowing. i hit some ice getting off the bangerter i15 exit doing about 15 mph and slid right into the island. im sure any sailor within earshot of my car during the slide would have been a nice shade of red. i ended up cracking both the drivers side wheels and bending one wheel hub. im just really glad i didnt mess up the suspension.

sorry i know this is kindof a derail from the current topic of conversation but i wanted to pop in and say hello.

-project

edit: doccable i just noticed your avatar. i bought a yoyodyne propulsion systems parking pass sticker but im too weak to put it on my car. blue blaze irregular represent! hehe

DragonStar4681 02-03-2004 12:13 PM

Project
No worries on the topic change. Welcome to the forum. im really sorry to hear about your 8. hope if comes back alive and well

Landon_Starr 02-03-2004 04:58 PM

I second that. It's terrible to hear such horror stories. Good luck in getting it fixed. Plan on replacing the stock wheels, or going with aftermarket???

I'm optimistic beyond normal levels.....something broken is an opportunity to upgrade to me!!

Good luck & welcome to the forum!

project 02-03-2004 05:06 PM

yeah i was so close to just going with the ms-01's but i just couldnt convince myself that i could afford them. bountiful mazda quoted me a price of 2675 for the set. if it had happened say this coming winter i would have definately bought them.

landon, where did you get your tint done? what level is it and how much did it run you?

doccable 02-03-2004 06:22 PM

project,
Where on earth, (or maybe another dimension), did you find a parking pass for yoyodyne? I've got to replace a few of my yoyodyne items, but have never seen one of those. I know - I'm off-topic, sorry!
-doccable

project 02-03-2004 06:25 PM

got it at a local gaming shop here called hastur hobbies. i saw it half buried underneath a ton of other stickers. the quality is poor but ill try to scan it and show you (if i can remember where i put it).

Landon_Starr 02-03-2004 11:24 PM

I got my tinting done at Utah Window Tinting (I go nowhere else ). They do an awesome job. As long as you pay cash, no questions about tint %. =) Ooops, did I say that out loud?

Mine are 20% all around. I paid $150, but I've done all my cars (6 or so..?) there, and I've gotten to know the owners pretty well, they might give me a discount. If they do, tell them you know the guy with the red 8, and tell them I said they'd give you the same deal. :D They're pretty easy to work with.

Utah Mini-Meet?

So who else would be interested in setting up a mini-meet in UT prior to the big one? I know our new member project suggested it again in another thread.

Jiven, Dragon? Interested? If nothing else, we could coordinate the trip up to CO, and get a Utah RX-8 caravan rolling East. :)

Since the weather seems to be quite the drag when owning a RWD vehicle, how about something like the weekend of March 27th, 28th?

I'll be able to provide some information on some of the local performance shops, etc. I'm currently working with a local performance shop to have my car entered in the Autorama, March 18th - 21st, so I'll be able to provide you guys some info. from there.

Let me know if you're interested--

--Landon

P.S. I installed my strakes on Monday, and the directions that came with them were wrong. Make sure you read the DIY strake install thread prior to installing, saves quite the headache. :D

i just called them before i noticed your edit and they quoted me $129. an added bonus for me is they are about 3 minutes from my house. the guy on the phone seemed pretty nice and i think im going to end up getting it done there. thanks for the tip.

as a side note, bountiful mazda gave me their dealer mazdaspeed brochure. ill try to have scans up later. but for now i can give you the prices they quoted me.

front tower brace- 345
rear tower brace - 235
mag wheels - 7000
ms-01 aluminum wheels - 2675
front roll bar - 418
rear roll bar - 388
shocks/springs combo - 1204
brake pad set - 308
front bumper w/ fog light- 1715
front bumper w/o foglight - 1600
side skirts - 945
rear bumper - 945
spoiler - 1110
flywheel - 900
muffler - 788
cf inner handle bezel - 147
cf door switch panel - 127
cf console kit - 522
shift knob - 118

all items plus tax.

personally i think these prices range from slightly more than average to ridiculously high. the funny thing is the service guy told me that i should wait and soon people would be making fiberglass copies of the body kit for less money.

Mazdaspeed...

Trussville is still consistently cheaper than your dealer quotes. Check em out if you get a minute.

--Landon

Landon_Starr 02-04-2004 03:38 PM

There are already fiberglass copies, but who really wants fiberglass if there's an ABS plastic/polyurethane option? I destroyed 2 fiberglass bumpers on my accord coupe a couple of years ago, I'm not interested in going down that avenue again. :)

It seems that Bountiful is charging more than what Trussville claims is RETAIL. I think I got even more expensive quotes from Murray. <shrug> The internet & globalization is a wonderful thing. :D

DragonStar4681 02-09-2004 01:30 PM

new sighting. I saw a yellow 8 in bountiful that had the xmen wing (or something really similar) on Saturday.

Landon_Starr 02-09-2004 06:08 PM

That's cool....I'd really like to see one in person, I think I've decided on the Mazdaspeed spoiler, but X-men is pretty unique....I may consider it if it looks awesome in person...

P.S. Dragonstar, were you interested in cruising up to colorado for the rocky mountain group meet???

--Landon

DragonStar4681 02-10-2004 03:51 PM

Possibly, thats pretty far out to make solid plans with the way my schedule works. Think it might be cool though.

Landon_Starr 02-11-2004 12:19 AM

Hey, a maybe's better than nothin'. :) I'll hit ya up a little closer to the date, if you end up coming, we should cruise up together, only thing better than a road trip in an 8 is a road trip with 2(possibly more..?). Also, Dragon, if you're interested in parts, etc., let me know. I'm currently working with a Utah based performance shop on getting some dyno figures on a combination of different mods (exhaust, etc.). It will be nice to see how the mods perform at our altitude.

Anyone else in the Utah area interested in the Rocky Mountain club meet in June? Let me know, we can try to organize a group drive up there. PM me or post here.

--Landon

DragonStar4681 02-11-2004 01:08 PM

Sounds good. as soon as i get some money pulled to gether i want to get exhaust and CZ1. until then im gunna get the clear corners. ya know cant run %100 stock.

JivenMushu 02-11-2004 06:27 PM

Hey, Landon!

When is the meet going on?

Omicron 02-11-2004 09:13 PM

June 5th for the Colorado meet. :D

Landon_Starr 02-12-2004 11:36 AM

I'm trying to talk the performance shop into purchasing CZ mods (10+ for the discount). They seem to take an R&D approach to modifications, and take pride in their own tuning (they may lead more towards an PEMS-type solution) but I'm trying to convince them into saving some R&D expense & using existing research/maps, plus that will open time up to do R&D on other things. :D

I want to purchase the CZstage 2, got an e-mail from Maurice saying they're looking to start producing the end of this month.

Nice thing is, we can get the 10+ discount even if we order 5 stage 2's & 5 stage 1's. I'll be running some dyno times stock, with the K&N filter replacement, & the GREDDY SP2 within the next month.

Keep me posted Dragon, when you want to order Stage 1. Let me know if you're interested, too, Jiven...

--Landon

JivenMushu 02-12-2004 02:36 PM

I have to admit that I don't know the first thing about cars, so all that talk you just said... :makes motion over head: Ya lost me. LOL It sounds cool, though!

Aight, Dragon... Were you on I-15 this morning? I was heading to work and ran into a titanium RX-8 right when I was hitting North Salt Lake...

project 02-12-2004 03:19 PM

so i think i have the worst luck in the universe.

saturday morning i wake up, weather looks ok. a tiny bit overcast but thats ok. i decide to take my car to work instead of the train. i get off work at 5. at 3 it starts to snow. you can imagine my snow paranoia from the accident i just had a week and a half ago. i get out of work, and the snow is coming down but the roads seem ok. no snow just really wet, not even slush. not wanting to try my luck with the freeway again i just decide to take state st all the way home. im being very careful, keeping about 8-10 car lengths away, only doing about 20 mph. around 50th s the streets start to get slushy and i start to get nervous. making the final approach to my neighborhood its getting kind of bad. im doing about 8-10 mph when the light turns yellow right at the moment. you know the one where youre going to fast to stop but too slow to make it through before it turns red. i lightly apply the brakes and lose all traction, slide through the intersection up onto the curb and hit a telephone pole. i want to die.

after a few moments some people come help push my car back onto the road. one of the ladies says my car looks fine other than about a 2 inch long scrape in the front bumper. when they finish i thank them, one of the guys compliments me on my ride (which makes me feel like an even bigger jackass) and the lady then tells me about a dent that 'isnt too bad' that i should be able to get taken out easily with a fix a dent kit. so i get home, check out the damage. and find the dent. the dent is right over my passenger side wheel. im thinking what the hell, i hit the pole dead on, where did this come from? there were no marks on the paint at all so did it buckle? after a few days of thinking about it i realized what happened. one of the guys pushing my car was standing right where the dent was. he dented it trying to push me off of the curb. the scratch sucks yea, but the dent is by far the worst damage on the car, and i didnt even do it. i cant be mad at him, he was only trying to help me out, but it still sucks. ive learned my lesson though. the car is in the garage till march. next year its going in there in november and not coming out till spring, snow tires or no.

DragonStar4681 02-12-2004 03:50 PM

Jiven, Nope that wasnt me. I have seen another titanium here in bountiful, but it lacks the spoiler.

DragonStar4681 02-12-2004 03:56 PM

Project, so sorry to hear about you 8 :(

FYI folks, we are going to be working out a Group Buy arrangement with many different Vendors through the Rocky Mountain RX-8 Club. This'll be one of the benefits of club membership. ICanrel-8 is our Vendor/Sponsor manager, so if you're interested in getting a group buy on anything, get in touch with him. PM me for his email if you want it.

Wow!!! That really sucks man! Glad your're ok though!

Project, you reeeeeeeeally need to get yourself some all season radials!!! Everyone that has them says they make ALL the difference in the car's handling and traction in the slick stuff.

So, are you going to get your dent repaired?

Landon_Starr 02-12-2004 05:02 PM

That really sucks, Project. You really have some of the worst luck....:(

Ya know, you all seem to be seeing more 8s than me. I've only seen 2 total, one winning blue, the other titanium at the Sears Grand on Bangerter (no spoiler). I guess I don't get out much.

My odometer seems to think otherwise, though (over 9000 miles). <shrug>

Good to hear about the group buy, Omicron. How many interested buyers do we have so far? Also, do you plan on upgrading to the stage 2, or are you satisfied with 1?

--Landon

project 02-12-2004 05:05 PM

yea i know i need to get them, my plan was just to never drive in the snow again. heh we all know now how effective that was! as far as the dent, my roommates dad is having a truck restored for him and he thinks he can get his body guy to hook me up either free or super cheap. as far as the bumper goes, i think ill just leave the scratch till i buy either the autoexe or a mazdaspeed replica kit. hehe hopefully i can get that taken care of before the meet in june.

Omicron 02-12-2004 06:27 PM

Sounds like a plan. Man, I'd LOVE to see the AutoExe bodykit in person... you'd make us all jealous as HELL if you showed up with that one! :D

And all season radials are in my near plans too. In the mean time, when the roads get crappy I just drive my Jeep. Boring as compared to the '8, but effective. ;)

project 02-12-2004 06:35 PM

i kept my jeep instead of trading it in. i was planning on just selling it myself and using the money to pay off my only cc. after this though im pretty sure im going to keep it and only insure it for the winter months. btw, can you guys check out my oz wheels thread in the tires forum and let me know if you can help? ill get a link for you in just a sec.

Hey guys.

I live in SLC (part time St George), Sugar House area. I attend the UofU....

Just wanted to pop in and say hi to fellow Utah Rx-8's :D

hey glad to have you on board!

ok which one of you were driving their titanium rx8 southbound on 3rd west near 2100 south yesterday? we passed each other but you were looking the opposite direction at the time...

Landon_Starr 02-16-2004 02:33 AM

Welcome to the board, Guy! Hope you find this place as awesome of a resource as I have for my 8!

Good to hear we have a fellow velo red in Utah cruisin around. =)

Omicron 02-16-2004 08:49 AM

Hi JERCS, and welcome... Glad to see you here! :D

JERCS 02-16-2004 11:09 AM

lol, I've been driving around since August! I got mine at the dealership in Mur. and those techs are idiots and don't even know how to drive a stick.... do you guys know another dealership that does better?

DragonStar4681 02-17-2004 03:05 PM

Welcome to the utah board JERCS.

Twas an interesteing lunch break today. on the way home say a silver crossfire on the way back saw a silver Evo VIII

Landon_Starr 02-17-2004 04:49 PM

That's cool....I've seen a couple of crossfires around, but I have yet to see an Evo yet. Crossfires would be cooler if the back of them weren't so, um, weird lookin'. My articulation and descriptive abilities are shot today, I've been reading too much code. :(

Murray techs do suck, Jercs. I was totally unimpressed when chattin' with em.

--Landon

JERCS 02-17-2004 05:17 PM

Looking at code all day? take it you are a programmer too.

I just bought my intake from RE, it'll be here in a day or two! So excited...lol.

drphill 02-17-2004 10:04 PM

Not technically "Utah", but since I got my 8 at Dahle in Murray, I'm back & forth between WY and SLC for service, shopping, flying out of the airport, etc.

shep fc3 02-17-2004 10:17 PM

Hey guys, I don't know if any of you know about the local rotary "crew", but here is a link to our forum www.slcrotary.com/forum I just added a RX8 specific section, so feel free to post and meet more local guys. We are having a dyno day on March 13th, so if anyone wants to get their 8 on there, please let me know. So far its just 7s that are dynoing. Well look forward to meeting some of you. Also feel free to come to the dyno day even if you aren't going to put your car on it. We will be hanging out all day. Cya.

JERCS 02-17-2004 11:30 PM

I'd be down for that, where at and what time?

Landon_Starr 02-18-2004 02:06 AM

Yeah....I'm a programmer. I concentrate on the software admin. & risk analyst(banking) parts a little more, though, so staring at code all day every day isn't something I've accustomed myself to.

It's weird, a lot of 8 owners seem to be in the programming field. :) I guess programmers' salaries are perfect equilibrium to maximize RX8 purchases. heh heh. Someone in the mazda sales department should check into this.

Landon_Starr 02-18-2004 02:31 AM

Congrats on the RE intake, Jercs!! You'll have to let me hear it sometime. They say it adds some AWESOME sound to the 8.

My KN filter replacement came in on Monday. Not installing it until dyno time, though, later this month. Going to dyno stock, with the filter, and then with the filter and SP2 exhaust. Should be some good data. <shrug>
