Jeez dude, rent a U-haul! Or were you going to rope the sofa to the roof of the Z?

Enigmah 07-20-2008 11:11 PM

Hey, have you guys had the July thing yet? I am new to SLC and have never met another owner, well one up in O.G. Den but he was a total mid-life crisis-er and none to friendy. I've got a stock black '04 GT, nuthin fancy, plenty o miles and constant rain /sprinkler spots.

Enigmah 07-20-2008 11:20 PM

Ok, here's the thread I was lookin 4. I'm up in Ogden the weekend of the 26th, how bout fri the 1st? I am a baby to the scene...

Jethro Tull 07-21-2008 12:13 AM

Welcome, En!

The weekend of the 1st is a possibility for me.

I'm nearly 50 though...but I swear I'm friendly even though I'm the "grandpa" of the local group.

If you live in Sugarhouse, you're close to Darius.

I've got an '07 Sunlight Silver, Touring, bought BN in March of '07, 6,300 miles.

Enigmah 07-21-2008 12:49 AM

Yeah, I could tell by the name ;) hope I didn't offend.

I've had mine fer 2 years but been busy, never joined a club cuz I hate 2 show off.

Jethro Tull 07-21-2008 10:23 AM

^^Never offended. Always glad to meet another 8 owner, no matter how young and inexperienced. ;)

bose 07-21-2008 10:31 AM

glad you found us dude, Well either weekend works for me so let's get somthing set, I don't know if we have enough people that know they can come this weekend so the weekend of the first should be enough time to set somthing up solid.

Good to have you, no matter your expirence level your more than welcome. If you have any questions post them here or pm us.

Hey guys I have been thinking of racing at the salt flats in September. Here is the web page
http://www.saltflats.com/index.html
I am going to get into the 130 MPH club this year if all goes well. Next year I want to get a cage and a few other requirements and go for the 150 club. I know the 130 will be a breeze but the 150 I am not sure if our car can break through, I think our top speed is 149 but I will give her hell trying.

Yeah, it's 148 for the '04, I don't know if it went up since then. I would hope so, ha! You can do it!! Represent

153 is as fast as I have heard of but it becomes airborne at that speed. Need additional front end down force to do it safely. At speeds upto 150 the car is stable (a little light, but stable) but somewhere from 150 to 153 the front end is not in constant contact with the ground.

bose 07-22-2008 08:51 AM

I got mine up to 147 in 6th gear at 6400 rpm so I still had room but I backed off cause I felt it get a bit squirrelly. So shouldn't be a problem with some downforce adders.

Jethro Tull 07-22-2008 11:06 AM

I've only had mine up to 115. But at 115, the car is rock-solid as you well know.

(Edit: I actually would have gone faster, but had the wife in the car at the time. Top-end attempts need to be done solo.)

Maximum torque is delivered at 5000 rpm on a stock engine... I wonder if you had a tail wind that day.

Pretty fast, bose, you win! :)

Bose got that out of a stock engine? Whoo that is moving in a stocker. Hell I've got quite a few bucks invested and don't get that much more out of mine (I don't wish to fly without wings).

Floyd, you can hit 130 on I-80 on the way there.

My trick is to wait for someone to blow-by you doing 90+. When he's about 3 or 4 miles ahead of you with no other cars in-between, and doesn't light up his brake lights, you know you've got no HP between you and him, and that's the signal to hit it. Once you close to within about half a mile, it's time to bring it back down.

bose 07-22-2008 12:31 PM

Yeah at the time I had only had it for a month, don't know how I got it to that speed but I did. Mind you no one was around and the only danger was to myself.

Enigmah 07-22-2008 04:49 PM

Oh yeah, no need to scare the passengers; it makes the friends think yr crazy :eyetwitch

Our top torque is actually at 8500 RPM, wow I know! For typical engines it's around 5,000.

yeah put a little front weight or down draft on that baby and go for it! I've been around 120, like tull said, rock solid!

Jethro Tull 07-22-2008 05:23 PM

I want to die peacefully in my sleep, like my uncle.

Not screaming in terror, like the passengers in his car.

I think you are confused, En. Top horsepower for the Rennie is at 8500 rpm, top torque is 5500 rpm.

Check it out:

bose 07-22-2008 07:27 PM

^^^ :bigok:

Enigmah 07-23-2008 12:01 AM

oh, retarded. Yeah I totally meant to type 5500; no way you can have max torque just before the suggested "redline". But our torque comes later than cylinder engines. Sorry, wasn't tryin to put misinformation out there. But either way, with all the engineers designing this beast and how tight the config's & tolerances are, I'd be surprised if we could gain much HP or Tq by modifications & tweaks. ..but I have been wrong b4 ;)

bose 07-23-2008 09:04 AM

Yeah it's a very well designed machine indeed. They only REAL power adders are FI, cramming more air and fuel into it is the only way to get big gains. Other wise the bolt ons we can buy only really change the sound and perhaps a h.p. or two.

04rx8gr 07-23-2008 10:42 AM

Hey guys!

Im finally all moved and settled down ( yup we did end up renting a U-haul) but regardless all settled. Give me a time and a place and me and mel will meet up!

What I'm reading is that by changing some programming (AccessPort), varying things like timing, fuel metering, combined with better breathing, you can approach a 20-25 hp gain, at the cost of other things like mileage, and risking detonation. You're right, FI (turbo) is really the way to get significant gains. And even there, you're going to blow seals sooner or later unless you are very, very careful. It's a finicky engine, and the engineers have worked hard to get it where it is without a lot of sacrifices.

If/when I ever start to seriously mod this motor (post-warranty), I think it will be wise to have 2 engines. Be working on one while running the other, so you're never down more than a week or so when you blow one up.

Enigmah 07-25-2008 12:45 AM

Hey are any of you guys goin to sevenstock? Vagas guys are cool with us caravaning down there with them...

bose 07-25-2008 09:36 AM

JT about those eyelids I'll just wait until you have yours done, my paint guy is extremely busy so I'll just wait until your's are done as well.

I wish I could go to sevenstock this year but there is no way in hell I can get the time off, unless business goes down the shitter and I have no more work, but I don't think that will happen, doing so much record breaking right now we probably won't even slow down during the winter.:icon_no2: too much work.:banghead:

Enigmah 07-25-2008 05:30 PM

Hey, I saw a silver one parked down from Broadway Centre Theater today. Was it any of you guys?

Sorry to hear it Bose, I need a roadie. That's good though that business is booming especially with our economy so bad right??

No sweat. My guy is just delayed matching the color. I'm going to paint them myself as soon as he gets me a good match. Hopefully next week. :)

bose 07-26-2008 01:32 PM

Sounds great C, I'm stoked!

Wasn't my 8. But yeah we're doing good cause two of our competitors have gone out of business and we hired their best guys, so now we have all their customers too.:lol2:

Nick 07-28-2008 12:53 PM

Hey everybody, I see that a new Utah thread is opened, the old one got deleted, and I have no idea why. Just wanted to introduce myself. I've got a '04 VR sport/appearance package. I've had it for about 2 years. Before that, I owned a Titanium Gray (AT) that my wife and I bought brand new in 04. After I found the 6-speed VR for sale, we had 2 RX-8s for about 6 months until the lease was up and my wife wanted a CX-7 (more practical, or something ;))

Here they are:
http://www.nickchaves.com/photos/VelocityRed_1600.jpg
http://www.nickchaves.com/photos/DSC_1101.JPG

Both have had engine replacements, and the gray one was in the shop 4 times from various accidents.

I'm getting the red one back from the shop today -- a girl in my parking lot at work forgot the parking brake and her car rolled into mine. Sad thing was that I'd parked away from other cars to avoid door dings!

I'm usually down in Utah county though I am often in south salt lake as well. Hope to see some of you guys around.

Jethro Tull 07-28-2008 01:51 PM

Welcome back, Nick!

The Utah sticky is still there, but it does look like some other Mountain threads have disappeared in the last day or two. Only admins, mods, and the thread starter can delete entire threads, AFAIK...

I've got an '07 Sunlight Silver, bought BN in March of '07, currently with 6,400 miles on it. It's just a weekend car, I don't commute in it or drive it in winter.

My wife's Subaru will be paid-off this winter and she's thinking about either an 8 of her own, or more likely, a Miata. We only have one kid and she's nearly all grown-up, so no mini-vans for us.

bose 07-28-2008 02:20 PM

Nice to meet ya, Nick...all my car info is below in my sig. Hope we can get a meet going, maybe in the next little while so we can all meet, just hard to coordinate everyone's schedule's. Hope to see you around.

Jethro Tull 07-29-2008 10:55 AM

Hey, Nick, that VR would look good with a pair of eyelids...hint-hint...

04rx8gr 07-29-2008 11:14 AM

AGAIN!! CAR WARS This saturday!!

Any one interested?

Jethro Tull 07-29-2008 12:14 PM

Remind me again just exactly what "Car Wars" is...and where.

rx8snowboard 07-29-2008 01:14 PM

In and Out of the shop

Hey guys, just got my car back from the dealer:icon_no2: I had some grinding going into 2nd 3rd and 4th so they replaced my syncros under my extended warrenty and I paid to have them replace the rest of them while they had the tranny apart. funny thing happened though, while they were doing this somone broke into the shop (at the dealership) and took a couple catalitic converters (one of them being mine:rant: ) so they replaced it free of charge:lol: . So if any of you are having problems with a part just take it to the dealer and have somone steal it while its in the shop:uhh: ha ha ha.. Really though, I have heard that cats are becoming quite the high comodity and people are stealing them while you go into the grocery store:icon_no2: anybody else hear about this?

bose 07-29-2008 01:27 PM

I would be but I only have stock system so I'd just get laughed out of the place. I don't really listen to music in my car usually get listen to the car talk. I'll probably check it out though.

I have heard of CATS being stolen recently, it's because they are made of two high priced materials. Platinum and Rhodium don't know how much they are worth can't find the figures and don't feel like looking it up. At least they were honest and didn't say it was plugged and it needs to be replaced so they could charge you for it and get money from the insurance co. too.

Jethro Tull 07-29-2008 03:11 PM

Catalytic converters have been stolen from trucks twice here at work, from the employee parking lot in broad daylight.

An RX-8 wouldn't be a thief's first choice due to very little ground clearance. They prefer SUV's and pickups because they can get under them without having to lift them first. But if it's in a shop, they've got all the tools they need right there. I suspect it was an inside job.

Just today a co-worker told me that his gas tank was disconnected and drained, right in his driveway.

I'm going to get one of those infra-red driveway alarms. I park my old Explorer in the driveway. Our Subaru and my 8 stay in the garage at night.

Hey bose, now THAT'S an avatar! :icon_droo

Isn't Joe Cocker playing there too?

I remember a Steve Miller concert in the '70's, I think it was at the Salt Palace when it still had the arena...we found a huge bag of weed in the men's room!

Thank you JT, I don't know who it is, just a nice picture I found. And you are correct sir Joe Cocker is the opener.

Yeah, I'll probably check out the carwars but I'm not entering, I don't even have bose stereo system in my ride. Kinda funny huh?
