Nice to see you've found our little cult. What to you have done to your car?

I'm always up for a meet or whatever. I live in Sandy have a Silver 04 with a couple mods. If you have any questions about the car or whatever post'em up. Next weekend is GT Live @ Miller.

Welcome!

Funny you mention a new differential. I just read that on the '09's, Mazda has changed the differential ratio to help accelleration. I wonder if you could swap-out an old ring and pinion for the new set?

I may be up for a get-together this weekend. Even if we don't cruise we could meet for coffee or something.

I replaced the ring & pinion on my '77 Plymouth Arrow for the same reason; at the time MoPar had the part available and it did make a noticeable difference on that car (that was before all of you were born, lol), along with the cute little header I put on it.

I guess if the '09 RX-8 is identical in all other respects, it would be a straight swap in our cars. But pricey.

It's also critical to get them installed perfectly. If the gear mesh isn't just right, the gears will "sing" as you drive. The faster you drive, the louder the noise. This indicates excessive wear- and that accoustical energy also means heat is being generated, and a small amount of power loss.

Sweet, is your buddie s2k yellow? I got beat up big cottonwood by one a couple months ago, bloody things are light and quick.

Saturday around 2? works for me, don't really care if/when we eat just somthing to do. I'm more for the driving anyways.

04rx8gr-did you do the limited slip and clutch yourself? I want to swap final drives but don't want to deal with outrageous labor costs.

Nice, my sentiments exactly. My only problem is I don't have all the know how...yet. I'm looking at two swaps currently may need to employ your knowledge, if you don't mind.

I disagree, gents.

My time is a lot more valuable than a mechanic's shop rate. Additonally, I always choose someone who offers some kind of guarantee in the event of a problem. Thirdly, I won't put myself into a possible warranty voiding situation with a car this new. If I wanted a new differential gearing, for example, I'd buy Mazda and have Mazda put it in, thus preserving my warranty.

I've had my car 15 months, and still only have 5800 miles on it. I'm going to take the warranty to the limit on time, not mileage. I paid a lot of money for an extended warranty- 8 years, 100,000 miles, for EVERYTHING- not just the "engine core" warranty extension.

So if I get the urge to mod it before then, it's going to be with Mazdaspeed parts, at a Mazda dealership.

Mike, I know you are down on dealership service, but you just admitted yourself that you lack the experience. What are your options if you massively screw something up that you did yourself? "Joe Rotary" who owns two RX-7's and has been doing it for years might be willing to help you drop something in, but is he willing to buy a replacement for you when the first one blows-up?

Oh, I understand. When I was your age, I spent a lot of time upgrading my car, too. And it was fun then, I have to admit it.

People change as they get older. Probably only one in a hundred of the young people who like to work on their cars will still be enthusiastic about it when they turn 50. You'll see, your priorities might change, too. My next-door neighbor is a professional mechanic. Makes good money at it, too. But he refuses to work on cars on his own time now, won't do it at ALL, lol. Pisses him off to have to even put a new set of plugs in his engine. Says he'd rather be in his boat, on the lake. He doesn't even own a car, just an F350 pickup that he only uses to tow his fifth-wheel and boat around. He never drives that truck for anything else. Seven years old and still looks brand new.

Out of curiosity, how many hours did you spend studying the rotary engine in your 2-year program? Was it local? SLCC?

Yeah, I may not have all the know how yet, but I will in time and at this point Chuck I have no choice anyways, I have NO warranty so if ANYTHING breaks I'm on my own anyways. And I don't wanna pay for Mazda parts=twice the cost.

So to each their own. If I had a warranty I may feel differently but...
