Good dealerships
Unfortunately the closest dealership to me isn't my first choice. You may be closer to where I bought mine, Legacy Mazda in the city of Orem, about a 20-minute drive south of where you will be living. There is also Bountiful Mazda, which is close to where I work, north of Salt Lake county. My last choice is D. Dahle Mazda, which is the most centrally located dealership in the Salt Lake valley. They are smaller than the other two and are currently undergoing an expansion, lots of gravel and dust right now. Almost no parking.
I just got my RX-8 last month, just barely 1,000 miles on it. I don't commute in it- I drive my faithful old Explorer to work. The roads are just too terrible to drive a nice sports car on a daily commute. Much road construction along my route right now. There is no-way I will drive my 8 in snow- way too squirrely with those wide tires and all that high-end power. And here they use a lot of salt on the roads so rust will set-in fast if you drive in winter. And the sand they use will pit your paint, windshield and headlight lenses. The 4WD Explorer or our Subaru Forester are our winter/commuter cars.
I used to own a (brand-new) 1980 RX-7 and just loved it. Sold it to become a responsible member of society, start a career (I'm probably much older than you if you are still in school). It's been in the back of my mind all these years and when I paid-off my mortgage this past winter, I decided it was time to get another rotary rocket.
Snow today, you'd think it was still winter! You have quite a change in store for you from San Diego- but the area is really nice, don't listen to the mormon stories. They are good people and you CAN have a great time here.

Mine has ASA AR1 wheels, his has stockers.
I see several red 8's in the area. I did follow one this afternoon, eastbound on 39th south, and it then turned north on 27th west and headed toward the mall. If that was you, I was about 200 feet behind you. I continued west on 39th, was headed home.

I drove the Explorer today, wasn't me. But one of our members works at the mall and he drives a silver 8 also. He usually parks in the east lot at the mall.
