Thumbs up 6/23: RX8 Meet and Run (Pics on Pg 2)

**EDITED** I've changed the dates and added a route map below. I moved the date out so folks can plan. I'm set for this so PLEASE attend!! I had to start a new thread as I had no ability to change the date in the title.

NEW DATE: Saturday, June 23rd at 11:30am

If you are late or miss us, go straight to Hell (see map) and wait for RX8s to fly by the "Dam Site Inn Bar and Restaurant. " It's where the left push pin on the map is located. We will make loops around the area there but the small strip with the ice scream (no kidding) shop and restaurant is where we will take frequent stops for water or snacks.

Meet up at the city park enterance along Huron River. Exit Barton Drive off of M14 (one exit east of Main Street) and head North. The park enterance is right there at the overpass on the north side of M14.

We'll stay there till 12:15pm. At that time, we'll head out onto M14 and get off on Main street. (Stay in the right lane) Immediately after going under M14, hook a right onto Huron River Drive. The fun starts here.

We'll follow this to North Territorial Rd, up Dexter-Pinkney then cut over to Hell.

We'll take about 20 minutes to get there. We'll stop at the Hell Bar parking lot. There's an ice cream shop there and other tourist stuff.

Basically, the roads around Hell make a loop going right back to the same bar. The loop is pretty fun in the 8 and the scenery is great. We can depart from there when ever we get done or hang out a while at the biker bar.

I plan to head to the A2sportcompacts.com meet at 8pm (same place as a couple of you have show up to). You are welcome to join in for that as well.

Please post up if you're interested and I'll PM you my cell #.

Hope to see ya!
- The Phreak

Here's the route and a loop highlighted for spirited driving.

(SIGH) I may have to be out of town for ANOTHER wedding event. I may be able to get out of this one -- and, if I can, I will try to come. I'll repost a day or two before that Saturday to let everyone know. Would be great to get as many Michigan drivers there as possible.

Chuck, are you a wedding singer? We're going to have to book you to come to one of these events in casual clothes. LOL.

Hey, I'm still wanting to see those clears on your pearly white! Hope they came out OK. Sorry I could stick around to pop em in.

Anyway, hope to see you all there on the 23rd!

Nah, no wedding singer here. Just a lot of family friends and relatives. This one is a wedding shower for my sister's daughter, my niece. I'm supposed to drive my wife and daughters to the other side of the State and then take care of my mother's financial stuff while all the women are at the shower event. But, maybe my wife and daughters can drive themselves and I can take care of my mother's stuff another time? Maybe not, tho'? I'll have to see what the situation is closer to next Sat. Best I can do. Wedding then is in August.

The clear corners look great. Appreciate the stealth bulbs! I pulled out the small reflectors inside the side markers so they shine much better when lit. Hope your trip to Asia and elsewhere went well for you. If I ever need some frequent flyer coupons, I sure know who to ask!

The spot where we will start is along the Huron River so it sould be a generally good photo opportunity.

There are a few other good spots depending on the time of day and lighting angles. Noon is the worst time for photo opportunitites. You usually want low level lighting coming from behind you. Not straight down.

I'll have my digital SLR Canon EOS along with a tripod. If anyone plans to bring a passenger with a video camera or has a clevar way to take video from inside the car, let me know. This route has more turns than the map shows. It should be a good video.

We can grab some lunch at Hell Michigan if you'd like. I know you all have busy schedules so this event is a short one. You can always break free and easily get back to I-94 at anytime you wish. I figure we'll be back to the starting place by 3:30 - 4:00pm. We can go shorter or longer routes. We'll decide as a group at the meet.

If anyone has good two way radios, please post up. I will have maps available for everyone the day of the meet. (Giving exit routes to anyone who had to drop out for some reason.)

Please post up if you have any ideas or requests.

Thanks a bunch! But I'm not really taking much, the RX-8 doesn't have much trunk space after the spare tire's put in

But, let me talk to my friend (whom I'm moving in with) and if it's cool with him, we could have a meet at the house one weekend soon. Everyone could bring a couple friends, the family.. We can barbecue, hang out in the pool and such.

Everyone else I asked is afraid to drive with me because they say I take corners too quickly. So I'm gonna try to duct tape the camera to the dashboard or something and see if that works.
It's OK if your friend wants to come. The more the merrier. I did this run last year with the Michigan Ferrari Owner's Club. I offered to take the rear in the RX since I was the slower car. Turns out I kept up just fine because you can only go so fast on public roads with traffic.

Any issues with my inviting the Ann Arbor Sport Compact Club to join in? I'll keep the RX-8s in front since I'm leading the route. A2SCC is mostly Subies and an EVO or Two. A Mazdaspeed6 may show. All of them are capable of keeping a good pace. They're a good bunch, no idiots in Hondas sporting fart can EBay exhaust.

Talking

For my 2c worth.......go ahead and invite 'em to join us, after all they were good enough to let us come to their Sat nite gatherings. Besides, RX or otherwise, it is all about the madness of cars.

Here are some pics to put you in the mood. These are from last year when I took this run with the Michigan Ferrari Owners Club. (My RX-8 did stick out a bit but kept up nicely.) Again, you can only go so fast on these roads.

Enjoy these then come enjoy the real thing.

LOL - Part of the group got lost. We found 'em.

One RX-8 and a bunch of Stallions

We litterally had people stop and try and take pictures with their camera phones.

Most of Huron River Drive looks like this.

It was a lot of fun. A gathering of car nuts like this is bound to be a good time.

I just avoided a disaster. My boss wants me to fly to Minnesota tomorrow to inspect some gear housings. I managed to catch a return flight that leaves 540am on Saturday and arrives around 940am. It cost an extra couple hundred to get back early but by God, I'M GOING ON THIS RUN!!!

My car will look like hell. I originally planned to take tomorrow off and install some springs and clean her up. I have literally no time to clean. Heck, my suitcase may be in the trunk when I get there.

Don't panic if I'm a few minutes late. (I shouldn't be since I'm not flying NWA.)

Looking forward to seeing everybody on Saturday.

Ahhhh.........more of life's little surprises. If it is any consolation my car won't be so clean either, I have had zero time to spend on it the last couple of weeks. Forecast is for rain Saturday anyway (assuming you believe forecasts.........the only job where you can be wrong 100% of the time and still HAVE a job) so if you sprinkle some soap on the bodywork the rain will wash it as you drive. (uh-huh).
Have a safe trip!

I should be able to attend the run tomorrow.
Let me know if it is cancelled due to weather.
How long should I expect the event to last?

Hey there Everyone. Tonight, I'm at a Hilton next to the Mall of America in Minneapolis. My boss asked me to be here again on Monday to escort an engineer from Japan.

Here's my dedication to our meet, I'm flying out on Sat am at 540am and returning to MN on Sunday night. LMAO!!

I will not miss this run. Rain or shine, I will be there so just come anyway. There is 0% chance of cancellation. I'm going through too much to not do it now.

I am geeked to see a few more 8s coming. The group is looking good. BTW, my car will be covered in the nasty film from the airport parking and the wheels covered in brake dust. Heck, I packed my driving shoes and clothes for this run so I don't have to stop by the house. (Just go from the airport to the meet.)

The list so far:
- PhreakdOut
- Sleddog_racer
- Casedogg + friend? (the more the merrier)
- Kors-Jan (Definately a possible maybe for sure, ... I think)
- Purch96
- Dagious
- One guy from A2SC
- Still pressing my neighbor to come too.

This is a decent amount of cars. Should be some good pictures. I've got the camera charged up already.

You can always cut out when you need. I figure it will be over and back by 3:30 at the latest.

Future meets we can keep extending them.

So sad that I gotta drive to the West side of the State today. And to make it worse, gotta take my Pontiac Vibe rather than my RX8. Hope you all enjoy Hell!

We missed 'ya Chuck! We really needed your car. We had a silver, a blue, a red, a yellow and a black. We were missing a white and a green to make it a complete set.

Will post pics soon.
