Another Lower Wacker Crash

http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2...ker-crash.html

Five critically injured in Lower Wacker crash
November 30, 2008 at 7:47 PM

Five people, including a child, were in serious-to-critical condition this evening when the car they were traveling in crashed into a pillar on Lower Wacker Drive near Columbus Drive, fire officials said.

Fire officials had earlier said that four cars were involved in the crash.

Five ambulances responded to the scene at about 7:20 p.m. and took three of the victims to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, officials said. The other two were taken to John H. Stroger Hospital of Cook County.

Fire officials said the car, a Ford Crown Victoria, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with the pillar.

Further details are pending.

This appears to be near the same place of the fatal RX8 crash from a couple of years ago.

Thats sad, lower wacker is a dangerous street, I take it everyday going home from work, I drive pretty fast because Im very familiar with the road and know where the turns are and how fast the car can go around it, but i play it safe now since there is snow but point is ppl think its an expressway and drive nuts, especially taxis.

Moving on, I'm running Blizzak LM-25 tires on my stock rims. I highly recommend them. This will be my third winter on them and after this morning's test they seem to still be running strong. They stick when you need them and break free when you want them to.

i also hate the snow ( damn army making me hate things ) and i would move down south but cant afford it. also it doesnt help that i install sat dishes for a living.

once again i would be more then happy to host a bbq. and if people want to chip in i can make my kick *** ribs you wont find better any where else

Stopped for speeding for the first time in my life.

I wasn't even driving the 8, it was my dad's 325i. We were doing 49 in a 35 in Hinsdale.

The cop let me off with a warning. Nice guy, I guess he was looking for stupid teenage Hinsdale drivers drunk out of their skulls.

Meh.

And I drove the 8 in snow for the first time today. Any jab of throttle...back end is out. It seems like it would be a lot of fun in a deserted parking lot but was not so on the street.

Your still young. You will be pulled over a lot more. esp in the 8... and to make the 8 a fun winter driver..invest in a set of good winter tires such as Bridgestone Blizzaks.

I think if everyone who comes brings 10 bucks for a half slab or maybe 20 for a full slab we could have a decent meet, but we'd have to know how much meat to buy for the meet so we have enough to eat.

Who else is interested?

Also will the size of the wheel affect the traction of the tires?

I know these are noob questions, but I really hated driving my 8 in winter weather with my summer tires two days ago and need as much traction as I can get. Any other tips for winter driving in IL?
Easy on that gas pedal!

you do not need any bags of sand or anything.. the tires will do just fine.. easy on the gas and thats it.. if you want you can do ONE bag. but only use it on bad days. I have those same tires that i used last year and it was like 4x4. lol.

No, you shouldn't have to add weight. Yes, it will upset the balance. Yes, the size of the tires will affect traction. Narrow tires will slice through snow better and less likely to hydroplane in the wet. Wider tires will put more rubber onto the ice. You pick.

gotta be over 17" to clear the brakes unless you have the stock 16's.

Doesn't make much difference outside of that. Smaller will be cheaper, both for wheels and tires.

Don't be stupid, drive the speed allowed by the conditions. Remember to add at least 3X the braking distance to stop. If you bust traction trying to start up, switch to starting in 2nd gear.

Although, with the amount of torque you probably won't have problems.

I agree with Al here. Don't add weight in the back. The only real trouble I've had in the winter is the front end "plowing" when trying to turn. Putting weight in the back will just make that worse.

I run 245 size all-seasons. I've been running them year round. In the spring I'm going to get a set of wheels and summer tires, since I've started going to the track fairly regularly. I will still use the all-seasons as winter tires until they wear out. After that I'll probably switch to snow tires since I'll be switching them out anyway.

The pirelli all-seasons actually didn't do too bad on the track. But one of my last track days my instructor told me I was getting to the limits of my car, which of course means time for better tires

This was the guy that was my instructor, so I trust his advice: http://www.ericfossracing.com/index....tpage&Itemid=9

He won the MX-5 cup this year, and will be running in Speed World Challenge Touring cars this next season.
