Where did you buy gas recently? We used to have trouble with our grand am with the cheaper stuff (grocery store, etc). A service guy I trusted at the time said they never had problems with shell, BP, mobil, but they often had problems with the others.

Octane ratings are the resistance to detonation of your fuel. It allows motors to run at higher compression. Some motors are premium required, others are premium recommended. Since our car says premium recommended, I figure I'll spend the extra 2 or 3 bucks per tank for it. Otherwise the car has to reduce igntion timing, which reduces power. Some people have reported no problems with this (BlueRenesis), but I think some people have reported their car doesn't run well on regular or mid grade. Anyone know if that is correct?

Although I was a bit curious when i heard the 8 need premium... I didn't think our compression ratio was high enough.... but then again, Id hate to see what knock does to a rotary compared to a normal engine

Buying 87 over premium doesn't save much in the long run. For me it's a tank every two weeks. 93 is $.20/gal over regular at Shell multiplied by 13 gal = $2.60 over the course of a year (multiplied by 26) and we're talking about $67/year extra. If you fill up weekly it's only $134/year. Not worth skimping in my opinion.

I just noticed something with the cheap gas too.
At first i thought it was the reflash but for a few fill-ups my mpg shot up from 18 to 20. But i've bee back down at 18 for the past few fill-ups, 19 was my last fill-up.
Dwelling on it, I was probably doing 20 mpg with bp/thorntons gas [i see thorntons trucks going through the bp refueling station all the time on elmhurst rd, but 92 is their highest octane offered]. The cheap 93 gas I get at Murphy's in Walmart seems to net the low mileage.
This week I'm going to experiment strictly with bp/thorntons to confirm my results. I fill up about 3 times a week.

For those of you who didn't know, I got stuck in a hailstorm 6 weeks or so ago, ended up with just under $2000 in damage...I finally had my life slow up enough to get my hail damage taken care of, so after 2 days of driving an exciting Chevy Cobalt, I got my car back last night and it looks awesome! The guy I went with did an outstanding job, even the big dings on the hood are completely gone - you can't see them at all - plus, he fixed all the paint chips (not caused by hail damage) and even a tiny dent over one of the wheel wells that was there when I bought the car! He even buffed it, waxed it, and polished my exhaust tips. Anyone in the Chicagoland area (western burbs) southern WI area - PM me if you'd like his contact info. (plus he is a former 7 owner) Great end to a lousy situation. Thanks to all here for good advice.

thanks chris.. i will have to give him a call. i dont know who bashed out my window. the one night where i had to park on the street. my window got bashed out ($500 to replace and $40 to retint it) and the hood and trunk got dented and paint chips... but im looking into it and have a few leads..

13 tickets?! Holy crap, dude. I can't even imagine what your insurance must be like. I thought it was only 3 tickets in a year in IL and you lost your license?
