When I was your age, autocross and corner working, at road races, would give me a thrill that would last for a week or 2 before I would hit the accelerator again. But, speed is a drug. That thrill ***** off. I need the hard stuff. I ran a couple of Solo I events. That couldn't quench my desire for speed. I began road racing until I had enough and quit cold turkey. I bought a minivan and had a Illinois Safe Driver certiticate. Then came my downfall. I wanted to get back into a car once it became time to get rid of the minivan. That became my downfall. I started looking at performance sedans and my brother-in-law (an enabler car enthusiast and knows about my problem with rotaries) suggested I get the new RX8. I did and that is the story of my downfall.

Nick - I usually hover around the speed limit or 10 over or so in town, knowing that there is just too much traffic to know when a cop may pop up. In the instances that I want to take it up a bit (or a lot), I stick to back country roads that I know well - very little traffic, no police presence, and no one in sight. Plus, I invested in a very nice radar detector that I can trust (cheaper ones were going off all the time and I got to the point where I just ignored it) If I'm zippin' along out in the middle of nowhere and my radar goes off, I know to hit the brakes. I commute down to Sycamore everyday, and a lot of the time, I'm the guy with cruise set at 62 in a 55 being passed by minivans and college kids, but that's fine because I know how heavily that area is patrolled. You've just gotta pick your spots, and stay below the radar the rest of the time.

I know that at least with NASA, you can volunteer at their events in exchange for some free track time.

Once I got to ride a E-250 van around the Ford proving grounds.... you'd be surprised how fast/scary a can ride can be if you have the right driver

If you've got the cash, I'd go Valentine. I have yet to hear anyone say a bad thing about it. If you get one I'll be officially jealous

Hey has anyone heard about gas stations around here doing the bait n switch on pricing? I hadn't heard about it til I watched this video. Honestly, I don't think I check the price once I swipe my credit card ...

I have the Bel RX65 pro - I looked at escort and valentine as well, but for the area I drive, the bel won hands down. I borrowed a friend's valentine - worked great on the interstate, but it was way to false alarm prone everywhere else. escort owns bel, so they spec'd out pretty close, but at that time, the bel was best overall. Valentine if you live on the highway, but I don't.

I used to have a Bel 945 (I think). It started going nuts after about 3 yrs. It was good for a lower priced unit. I just picked up a Escort 8500 referb on Ebay. Escort has been taking them in on trade and selling them for $150.

An Escort 9500, Bel STI, Val 1 you will be looking at above $300. Of those three, I would get the Bel STI.

Isn't it funny how things work out with a lawyer.

Glad you got out of that one....

so what are you going to do next time you are going to get pulled over ??

I got pulled over for 14 over in OHIO last weekend on 4th of July on the highway. I laughed. The officer said "you were driving at dangerous speed levels" He wanted me to simply pay the $165 fine and that it will go on my record. To that I simply said naaa, I will take care of this in court. That surprised him since I was from Illinois...and said "that it will be easier for me to just pay the fine" I laughed and drove off!!!

One of the thousands of lawyers from PPL is going represent me in the state of OHIO to get it dropped!!!

I will let you know what happens!!!

Look at this link: http://nasamidwest.com/pages/volunteer.asp

Looks like there is a link on that page to email the volunteer coordinator - I'd start there.

Looks like you just have to join NASA and sign up to be a volunteer. If I'm reading it right, two volunteer days equals one free track day. You could volunteer at Autobahn next weekend and then get a free day to use at Gingerman in September, or Autobahn in October.

Most NASA events require you to sign up for both days, but I think the Gingerman one will allow you to sign up for one day. The Autobahn one in October is one day. Or you could do Road America in August for half price, I would imagine, if you volunteered for both days at Autobahn.

NICE...waiting for the outcome. I got pulled over in OH several years ago, the cop said I wouldn't have to worry about my insurance going up since it happened out of state--uh huh--so I eventually coughed up the dough. I was willing to drive back and fight the ticket.

Oh yeah,
Welcome to Chicago, Tony!

You must be joking.

The HPDE meet got scheduled on the ONE SINGLE WEEKEND I have something planned for. I am free literally every single weekend between now and the end of the year...except the second weekend in october.

I think I can make it to the Aug. 3rd one though, probably in a 325i if I can't get my power problem worked out by than.
