Can't speak for any others that Road America and the Autobahn, but the Autobahn is well worth the drive, South or North course.

Do any of the tracks in the area allow passangers? I would like to ride along with someone at least once before I go at it on my own. Is there anyway for me to do this?

Not so much the track, more the club that you are running with. I know NASA does not let passengers ride along until the driver has reached a certain level, but at Road America with the Fbody or Shelby Clubs, they really don't give a hoot.

At NASA events you can always get a ride along with an instructor and you will also start in HPDE group 1 which requires you to take an instructor along with you in the car until the sign you off to advance to the next level.

I'm thinking of hitting it on a Monday to take advantage of the full 3.56 miles

The north course is a LOT more interesting than it looks on a track map!

tdiddy,

Do what I did - come hang out at a track event for a couple hours. It will help alleviate a lot of your concerns. You can probably get a ride along as well - just make sure ahead of time they will be available. The one I went to to check things out didn't allow them, but that is rare. It was that Mazda-specific event. Then I signed up for a NASA event at Gingerman. It is a great track to do your first event on. Lots of runoff and very few things to hit.

FYI - if you are concerned about insurance, I was told by my state farm office that they would cover me as long as I wasn't racing, running against the clock, or doing anything illegial. Based on what you told me when we met in person, I'm guessing you have state farm as well.

Like Kyle said, at least with NASA you start in the beginner's run group. Passing zones are limited to the straightaways, and most events require point-bys to pass. There is no pressure to drive any harder than you feel comfortable with. If an instructor tells you to do something you aren't comfortable with, you just don't do it. I didn't have that problem at all - my instructor was really great.

Thanks for the great explanation, guys!

Yes, I have State Farm. I figure that since they pay my salary the least I can do is purchase their insurance.

I am not really concerned with insurance or my driving skill (or lack there of). I would just like to progress slowly. I would like to go and watch once. I would like to ride along with someone once. And finally, I would like to enter a beginner's group and drive with an instructor. That gives me plenty of time to ask questions and learn before I endanger my car, myself, and more importantly the people around me.

PS - Once my turbo is installed and tuned hopefully I won't have any problems passing on the straights.
