The Last Open Road
I visited the Road America website today and a news article caught my eye. The Road America shareholders has stopped (for now) Sheboygan County from widening and straightening some of the county roads that made up the original Elkhart Lake race course.
I spoke with my contact at Road America, who confirmed that they were nearly too late. Trees have been cut and utilities moved in preparation for this "highway improvement" project. There is a temporary stoppage while the Environmental Impact Statements are reviewed and the Wisconsin Historical Society weighs in.
Road America is encouraging autosports and history enthusiasts to write to the Sheboygan County Board, asking them to halt the project because of the history of these roads.
You may e-mail a letter to the board mail to: www.co.sheboygan.wi.us/html/contact.html.
If you prefer, you may send a letter by regular mail to Sheboygan County Board, 508 New York Ave, Sheboygan, WI 53081.

Great info Rex!
If the road is still "standing" when the MRR goes to Road America Aug 21 - 22, we could do a parade lap with all the RX-8s, 7s, REPUs, etc. Maybe Saturday afternnoon on the way back from RA (or on the way there).
Cheers,
Steve

I haven't been to RA for many years, but the roads in the surrounding countryside were absolutely perfect for sports cars. I can remember dicing with a guy in a TR6 along two lane roads with corn 6 feet high along each shoulder. Absolutely great. Be sad if they changed all that in the name of progress.
