My Illinois people, tint laws
Hello all, I am wondering how many of you have your front (passenger) windows tinted? I have seen the laws that say you can have any degree of tint on your back, side widows and the back window. Currently my back, side and back windows are tinted heavily, I need some in the fronts to balance it out. I do not want to go full limo on the sides but a significant amount. Any of you bold enough to break this law?
If so how often did you get stopped, where, how much were the tickets.
BTW I am in the Peoria area, shout out to Peoria.
Peace,
bosko

Any window, behind the front seats, can have tint you want. There can be no tint on the front and side 2 windows at all.
My son bought his Nissan with some percentage of tint on the side windows and later received a ticket. He then removed it.

Unfortunately, that's why I don't have any tint - I think it looks weird to just have the back and the suicide doors tinted - so I just don't have any. Some on here have tint and have had no problems, others have had a lot of problems...(ie tickets) really no way to tell.

illinois law sux in the tints cause you can do the back and it can be black as a limo but you cant tint at all in the front .... i have them in the front but not that dark and i am have lucky (knock on wood) that i havent get a ticket on the tints alone (i have for other things but ont the tints) soooooo i know that there are alot of people that do it and roll the dice and they will get the ticket and some never get one for the tint ...... some cops will get oyu for it and others have other things then doing that

This might not help much, but...
I bought the car in Maryland, had it tinted in Virginia while I was stationed there and now the car is currently in Michigan. I had them tint the windows 5% all around with a 9.5-10" front banner. Now granted the car has Colorado plates on it, but ::knock on wood:: I haven't had any trouble with the law. That's my story I suppose.

Illinois law doesn't allow the front windows to be tinted...with that being said I do have tints on my DD and the FD. I believe the fronts are tinted at 20-15% and I haven't had an issue with the police (4 years and counting).
The way I see it is if the cop wants to give you a ticket, he/she will...so you gotta pay if you wanna play.

My Toyota pickup came with tinted sides (it was supposedly from Texas) and I drove it for several years then had a county sheriff stop me and give me a warning for them. I removed the drivers side and never got around to the passenger side and drove it a couple of more years until I was stopped again in town at 3 AM by a city cop who gave me a warning about it. I finally took that side off. Depends on the mood they are in, I guess, as to whether you get a ticket or a warning.

I just got pulled over about 2 months ago for my window tint and loud exhaust.
(Southern IL near St. Louis)
I have about 15% tint all the way around and 8'' on the top of my windshield that is 5% (limo)
It rained the first half of the month, so they cops were pulling anyone over for anything. (as I left the parking lot, he already had his lights on pulling someone else over)
I went to court on these tickets and if you know your rights and research the laws two things can happen.
1: They dismiss the charges
2: They are so dumbfounded you know what you are doing they kick you out of court as to not look stupid themselves (since they don't know the laws themselves)
Number 2 happened to me about two weeks ago. I got the ticket, did my homework on the law and the rights I have (supreme court rule 504 is amazing in IL if you know how to use it)
When I stood on my rights when I went to court, the Judge actually denied me my constitutional right to assistance of council, he denied me the supreme court rule 504 and denied me a Trial by Jury and had me escorted out of the court room.
Not the ideal situation, but I don't have to pay a fine and that town hasn't pulled me over since.
I do need to hit the DMV up to get a new license as the county is holding mine illegal sine I full filled my bond requirement by showing up in court.
No warrant was issued either, because last week I got pulled over for driving with my neon's and LED's on and wasn't arrested (I was very happy)
Neon's aren't illegal in IL if they aren't flashing and know the law
Amazing what you can find at the Springfield Library
But all in all. If you do your research and have the ***** to stand up on your rights to a cop and in the courts. You will NEVER have to pay a fine for window tint/exhaust/neons/or any stupid non moving violation ticket you get.
But you WILL get pulled over, and probably a lot for a while. The cops in my town don't bother me anymore. I drive by with neons, music and loud exhaust without any problems. Other towns I still get harassed a bit, but nothing will ever come from it. Mainly just warnings now.
Let me be very clear on one thing though, If you do plan to stand up on your rights and research the laws. Make sure to research it in great detail as the courts/cops will try to trick you into answering questions you don't have to and have you incriminate yourself.
If you have any questions let me know. I don't give legal advice but I can show you how to find information about the laws and IL rights you have.

I have all mine tinted at 20%. Looks hot. It's the chance you take. I always get off because of my profession. It's not right, I know, but they show me professional courtesy. I guess it's a perk. I never play the card. They just know me. It was said before...you have to pay to play. I'm done with my fragmented sentences! Peace.

Tint is hit or miss for the most part. Around here, most Chicago cops won't give your tint a second look (unless they're already pulling you over for something else). However, once you venture outside of Chicago into the smaller suburbs where the coppers don't have bigger fish to fry, its almost a gurantee you'll be pulled over. I have heard that you can get a legal waiver for the tint from your eye doc (light sensitivity or something like that) but most docs won't sign the line unless you have a legit eye problem.
Cissel, I can't say I'm familiar enough with the law to say you're right or wrong, but my understanding is that a ticket in traffic court is different than a crimal charge. Seeing as how you still have the bond on your license, it obviously hasn't gone away so perhaps that strategy is not as sound as it appears at first glance.
Personally make sure I'm familiar with the quirks of LOCAL MUNICIPAL Law of wherever I got the ticket. Local laws often take precendence over state laws when it comes to motor vehicles, and even then I'd rather leave the court battle to a lawyer who specilizes in traffic cases.

i have pretty medium dark tints, it says in my sig what it is and I only got 1 ticket when I was parked by the airport, a traffic person gave it to me cause they ride there bicycle just giving out tickets for anything....
But other than that one I had no problems at all, I plan on getting my windows limo all around.
