>lycanthrope,
I assume that Evo School is some kind of driving school?
I'd love to have the lesson if I could. This whole autocross experience is so addicting, and just make me more and more want to learn how to drive...
(When I run on my last ride, Toyota Solara, I never felt like this.. it was fun, but not addictive...)
I told my wife that I'm planning to attend only 4 or 5 events this year just to see how i like it, but now I may need to come up with some excuses to go more!

>Rzoops,
actually I have been watching those two videos again and again, side by side, matching for each corner... and totally understand what you meant by squeaking tires now. Pat rode with me for the first few runs, and told me about the rhythm of Gas' on and off, and steering inputs. I tried to do the same, more I go in to slalom i loose the rhythm, and getting messy...

also the hard and short braking before the corner, instead of soft and long one, is something I tried, but could not figure out on sunday.

i'm likely not be able to make it on 26th, but will be at the one after.
hope, I can ride with you then...

Thanks for all the advice!

Also, let's look at your hands. You look really hunched up on the wheel, with a death grip at like 11 and 1 on the "clock" of the wheel. You often have your hands crossing over the imaginary 12 o'clock position. It's difficult to convey why, but this is part of why you are over driving the car. Relax a bit and keep your hands closer to 9 and 3. Watch my video and focus on where my hands are at on the wheel. I never cross the 12 position and try to keep my hands at roughly 9 and 3, even in mid corner. This is something you can practice every day on the street and it will help you become a lot smoother. It's a trick I learned early on that contributed to me being smoother.

No one is a born autocrosser. I had to learn all of the same stuff at one point. It's difficult to go into an event and make 6 runs and gain huge ground. Pick one thing you want to focus on and do it. Whether it is hand position, being smoother on the brakes, or whatever.

tacti evo school is a kind of autocross driver school we usually have but this year we ended up missing out due to venue problems but what i was trying to say i can do my best to pair you up with someone who can ride with you alot and take you out in there car and help instruct you but it looks like you may have already found someone. if anyone else needs someone like this i can work something out. we have quite a few national competitors who love to help and its really nice to have someone dedicated to just you. again i cant make any promises but i think i can work something out. also great advice ryan my only question is where was don for this event?

Don was at a Louisville event this past weekend. I decided to skip that to try out the new venue and I was definitely glad I made that decision.

The next event on the 26th also coincides with a local CKR event, which I know Don will be attending. But.. I hate the venue they're running at and I will make the drive to Wilmington again!

While y'all are in a reviewing mood, how about taking a look at the vid of my fastest run and critiquing it? I know I was losing out in the sweeper. The run actually starts at 2:28, pardon my newbness in posting (first time with the camera).

>Rzoops,
I just tried to drive (well, not my 8, but my wife's highlander though) holding 3 and 9 o'clock, and without crossing my hand over 12 o'clock, when I was driving around the town to go to grocery shopping. it seems much harder than I was thinking when i read your post. even in daily slow speed driving, I think I got the bad habit of holding wheel on upper part, and cross arms all the time...
that would be something I can try in my everyday driving.

>lycanthrope
got what you mean. on sunday, Pat rode with me and also let me ride on his car, and that was extremely helpful. He gave me a lot of advice after each run. and I really learned more seat time is the best mod... even when I understood the advice in my head, it's so hard to drive the way I want...

>Chiefmg
I used Mac, so I'm using iMovie to edit video, but Movie maker would do the job as well.
if you'd like I can trim the video (and add title if you'd like) for you. let me know.

Maroon supercharged Miata?

Hard to tell a whole lot from the camera view. Being able to watch the hands and your helmet can help a lot. You drove very smoothly, first of all. It's pretty easy to build off of that. You have to be smooth and slow before you can start adding speed. But that's basically what you need to work on. You could've carried more speed at every single point. You don't need to go out and be a daredevil and end up sliding through every section, but next time, throw the car into corners a bit more. Go faster through the slalom and use your hands to keep up with the cones.

The Miata has terrific suspension that can handle a lot of sudden transitions and tight corners. An autocross is the best place to get yourself into trouble, because the worst that can happen is you hit a couple of cones. See what it feels like to go too fast and then back off from there. You already know how to get through the course in a pretty direct fashion, just throw a little caution to the wind and go faster Riding with someone in a much faster Miata may be what it takes to say, "wow! so I can carry THIS much speed and be okay?"

Also, I have a pretty good suspicion based on a few corners that you are not looking very far ahead. You should be looking at least a couple elements ahead of where you're currently at. By the time you're going through the sweeper, looking at the turn in cone, you've already botched the entry for the next turn. Let your subconscious memory help you out. Or at least, start teaching it to help you out. The further you look ahead, the more prepared your brain is to make quick decisions without having to pause and actually think about it.

There is lag time between your eyes, brain, hands, and feet. If your brain is aware of what's coming a couple of seconds ahead, your hands and feet will react so much quicker. Like the hands on the steering wheel thing, it is difficult to practice, but NOT something you necessarily want to practice on the street. Next time you walk the course though, walk it and focus on what the next element is from wherever you're at. Then just try to work your way up during your runs to looking further and further ahead. "LOOK AHEAD" is one of those phrases that just gets drilled into your head at any autocross school, and it's amazing how it can help.

Thanks for the offer Tact, I had someone on another forum give me some guidance on that. I'll be sure to do better next time.

Ryan,

Yep, that was me. Thanks for the review. I knew I wasn't looking far enough ahead. I roadraced motorcycles a number of years ago so know the importance of doing that, but for some reason the last two events I have found myself driving the front. Need to just get my head out. My car does not have stock suspension, it is upgraded (FM V-maxx with Jackson Racing sways) but I think right now my tires (Toyo T1Rs) are holding me back. They were not at all happy with the heat, I don't push until they are squealing but they were making some uneasy movements. I'll see what I can do in the fall when I can next attend an event.

I wouldn't get too concerned with trying to fix everything at once. Ryan is right about focusing on one thing at a time. For most of us, learning to autocross well is a skill learned after years of experience and seat time. I'm glad I could help you out. The big thing that helps a lot of people is looking ahead. If you need any help, and I'm at the event, just grab me and I will assist as much as I can.

That indeed was the section 8 That black 8 had some young kid that needed driving lessons - he was a bit timid in his but was wearing the typical HUGE 8 smile when I passed him the first time, maybe daddy's car and he had to have it back by sunset, lol. Yep, live up over the hill - you live up past the high school? It was a great night for driving. I have been asleep I guess but had not noticed your rims until last night, what are they because they don't look like the ones in your signature pic - either that or the velocity in which you went by made them look different

Recovering from a long weekend.. took the RX-8 down to Carolina Motorsports Park (~7.5 hour drive from Lexington) for the Integra Type-R Expo. Two days worth of seat time, plenty of friendly people, and an awesome track to drive.

This was my first track day with the RX-8 and first time at this course. I will be hitting Putnam in a couple of months to better get a feel for the car on a track I know a lot better.

Looks nice man. Are you going up to mid Ohio in July with us? Also how did the rs3's hold up on the track?

I'm not planning on it. I like to keep my car stuff on the weekends. It just makes it easier to enjoy them.

The Hankooks performed very well, even with the ambient temps in the 90's and the sun beating down on the track all day. They are not as good as the RE11's for braking/accelerating, but lateral grip, especially tossing the car into corners, is fantastic.

When's the next meet n greet?... I wouldn't mind putting some faces to these names at some point.

And I know there are autox events, but aside from going to spectate I don't know how well I'd fare there. I'd definitely wanna hop in and drive a (horrible) lap, but I don't have track tires or much experience driving aggressively with a stick. So that's my excuse for a regular ol meet n greet instead :P

Most Saturdays there's Fuel coffee and cars down on Riverside Dr (East End I guess). I hope I can get down there this Saturday around 9 or so. Lots of cars and 8's.

I'd like to do a auto-x this summer, but I'm getting over a strange case of vertigo, so no telling where I'd end up, probably in Indianapolis. I'll probably just end up watching one instead.

im not knocking the idea of a meet and greet or that cars and coffee thing but dont worry so much about being good at autocross. everyone is really bad and slow there 1st time and it is expected. also you dont really need good tires in fact id recommend using bad tires as they will show your mistakes more and help you learn.

I know Cars and Coffee is hard to make for some so early on a saturday, but it is a good time. I'm up for a meet, especially if we include a drive. I'd be happy to put together some east side roads to drive if anyone's interested. I seem to always be busy on the weekend, but I can make some time if we have some interest.

Autocross isn't for everyone, but I recommend checking it out for yourself if you've never been to one.

I realize that autox isn't for everyone... and certainly not in my cards right now. Just saying that I don't want my street tires to suffer my horrible driving at this point. I'm up for anything and a drive though.

I am down with a meet as well. I would love to auto x but I can't really afford it and with a stock 8 and all season tires I found while driving the dragon that it can suck a bit- stupid trac control was really pissing me off - either that or there is something wrong with her which then would take $ I don't have to fix so ignorance = bliss. There are some great roads around here so it would be fun to maybe meet and have a nice cruise and maybe grab some lunch some time. I love to learn from you folks so when I get some $ I can spend it wisely on mods. I would love to come watch you guys auto x in Wilmington next time though to cheer ya on - I even have a canopy that could offer some shade for us i can bring if desired.

i'm up for the meet and greet (and cruise) as well.
I don't know if i can make it to the fuel this weekend (i'll try though)
how about we meet at the fuel and then go to some park for cookout (or stop somewhere for lunch), and cruise in the afternoon?

in that way morning people like me can just go to fuel in the morning, and then non-monring people can just comedown towards the end like noon.

and well, autocross may not be for everyone but it is something worth a try, or you'll never know.
least for me, I just started this summer, and already hooked...

if anyone wants to just try autocorss once, but don't want to waste your tires, I have a set that I don't mind let people use for one event.
It's stock RE040, and slightly off balance, and also it's getting pretty hard.
not a good tires, but least you can save your tires if that is something holding you back.

Sounds like a good plan tact. I'm up for it whenever, but i most likely won't be at fuel saturday. I have to help a friend move some stuff early in the morning.

Redson: since you'll probably see this, it shouldn't effect getting your **** done. I can just meet you at your parents when i'm done at my friend's and C&C is over.

Edit: I know of a nice park on the east side that we can cook out at and is surrounded by nice roads. There's actually two. One up on the hill and one bye the river. I believe both have grills. The one by the river is smaller, but less used so we'd likely have it to ourselves.

Compared to the Speed 6 I had, the TC seems a little more forgiving in the 8. Maybe that has to do with 100 less lb/ft of torque the 8 puts out. It also might be the 2010 has a bit different threshold over earlier models. I know coming out of Mike's Car Wash up on Fields Ertel I can hang the back out after the tire shine gets all over the tires and I can do a formula drift in it without the TC getting too nanny-like.
