wow crap - sorry I have been MIA here with some route information.... augh. Not sure if you still wanted some help but here are my thoughts!
There are so many ways to go.... it's really a matter of what you want to see, where you want to go how long you want it to take.
There is taking Rt 9 all the way up Lake George to either Rt 8 or 74, hop on 87 for a bit then off to rt 73 into Lake Placid. The nice thing about Rt 9 up the side of Lake George is you get some increadible views.
I sent my dad a message to see what his suggestions are for a route to Lake Placid from Lake George if you guys wanted to do that. I remember taking some wild roads there when I was younger. Lots of high cliffs and turns!
From Lake Placid I think you may be able to hop 9N to Ausable. That should be a really pretty drive.
So as of now those are my suggestions. I will let you guys know what I hear back from my dad about going from LG to LP.
I know this is completely a crazy thought and I totally forgot about this! I did a great ride once to Lake George: It was the following:
We started in Stow MA
495 to Rt 2 West (this runs along the border of MA/NH and MA/VT)
We took Rt 2 all the way across MA, this is the Mohawk Trail. What a killer ride!! Up and down mountains, hair pin turns you name it. Amazing views!
From there you can pick up either Rt 9 or 4 North in the Troy area and go straight to Lake George then to Placid.
I don't want to blow up any ones plans, just a suggestion

Hotels are never fun Any thing I can do to help? Let me know. As far as taking Rt 2. Definintely something to look into. The Mohawk Trail is beautiful as it goes right over the Birksheirs.
I'll be getting that drive route from Lake George to Lake Placid over the weekend. My dad said he knows 2 increadible drive routes for it.
I can't even tell you how much I am looking forward to this! The fact that we might drive right past my driveway is even cooler

I really like the idea of Rte 30 through the middle of the Adirondacks (original plan) as the route up to Lake Placid. Much longer than Rte 4 or Rte 9, but isn't that the whole idea?

Ok so here is a round about way to do this but, whether we take Krysy's suggestion of the Mohawk Trail (8a) west or still meet in Brattleboro and take 9 to Bennington, why don't we then head north on 22 or 95 (depending on Bennington or Mohawk Trail) Stay on 22 til it joins with 372 then to 29 then to 4 then to 9 in Glens Falls. Once in the town of Lake George we take 9N along the lake...till we get to Bolton Landing-Riverbank Road. This will take us back West to 87S where we can open up the cars and take a quick jaunt back down to West Glens Falls. Then taking Corinth Road into Hartman, NY where the road turns into Call St. Call st. then Joins up with 9 again (East River Road) then to Main St. in Corinth, NY. Then Maple St. to Saratoga Ave (9N) to Route 10. Follow 10 till we hit 7 and go along the south shore of the Great Sacandaga Lake and cross the BRIDGE THAT GOES OVER THE LAKE (98) That turns into 4 over to 113. That turns into 149 and then we are back to route 30 on our original route!
ANyone confused yet? LOL. I think that this would be a nice way to see Lake George and the other Lakes we wanted to see.
By the way... I used Google maps to view all these roads.

I'd be happy with Mohawk Trail OR Rte 9 to Bennington. They are both great twisty roads with some spectacular views. How to get to Rte 30? I have no idea. I'll just follow the crowd.

I'm down for whatever route as long as it's pretty and winding. If we could have a helicopter take an aerial shot as we drove across that bridge, that would be teh hotness. heh

Anything sounds good to me. I was just offering more ideas since I kinda know the area
The route you just suggested is pretty much what I had in mind as far as going along LG - Bolton Landing is where I live. I'm gonna talk to my dad tonight about the routes. I'll post em and you can decide which or if you want to use those.

Based on the mapquest maps I've looked at - it's only a minor diversion from the original map to get to LP. It looked like it would be about 20 miles off the original route to go a bit more east to LP for the night, with a smaller routed that connects back to RT 30 easily enough.
So how is everyone feeling about changes? Easiest to check out KrysyGT's route options and pick?
IMO - the best mix between scenic route and least interupted route (ie. as few stopsign/light intersections along the way) would be the way to go.

A look I'll share for the first portion of the run. Assuming a good sized group goes to the UConn show, this Spring Run will be the 2nd time I'll see more than 2 8s toghether. (aside from the car lot, but that doesn't count!)
