I had this problem before... it was caused by my K&N typhoon intake - take out the intake - put the stock intake back in and the car won't stall anymore. If you don't have a intake then I don't know whats your problem

Definitely check your air box for leaks if you have the stock air box - it maybe that

What I discovered was the o-ring around the MAF was split in half, completely, one half barely hanging on by a thread. My final diagnosis is that either the car came with the MAF installed a little cockeyed or when the intake was installed the o-ring got slightly pinched. Over the span of 6 months the vibration of the motor eventually turned the pinched o-ring into a split o-ring. Of course a split o-ring at the MAF will alow outside air in (aka vac leak) that goes unmetered. Not only was it a vac leak BUT since outside air was coming in right on top of the MAF it was sending the AIT readings soaring to the temp of the engine bay itself rather then the air entering the engine.

Since I havent heard about it still stalling I'm assuming it is fixed, either that or well i dunno.

kevin.
I'm going to ask the obvious : did you retest the temp readings after fixing the o ring ? did you replace the temp sensor ?
I would highly doubt that a small vac leak would supply enough air to upset the sensor that much - .....

The code that i pulled from Jeff's car was related to the MAF since he had just changed intakes... you know the MAF is extremely high resolution and touchy.

We went on some runs to see if he could make it happen again while I was logging but it didn't happen..

eh..

clean maf,

check to see it is down and secure, and check the o ring around the maf base. check for the nipple that plugs the intake for the vdaf.

beers

Yeah we cleared the code and it didn't show up again. I had this happen to me also when I installed my Mazdaspeed intake and again when I put back the stock airbox. I think its just the MAF getting bitchy because it wasn't expecting airflow change.

If you're implying the problem he's been having is due to a faulty MAF and/or installation - his MAF is brand new since the dealer replaced it trying to diagnose his problem.. it happened again afterwards. =/

not the maf or the nipple....its just random that the car shuts off.....and even more random that intake temps are so high the car keeps going into limp mode or shutting down

OK Update. I dropped my 8 to Wayne on Friday for several issues i.e. wiper arm, head lights, fog lights & of course the best one - the stalling issue. I just got a call back from them.

Wiper arm is replaced.

Head lights & Fog lights will not replaced because of front end damage. Anthony the rep that I am working with said that when I come in we can speak to the Service manager to see if we can convince him to swap out my head lights and fog lights. Basically im getting condensation and hazing on my headlights and condensation on the fogs.

Stalling under high speeds and braking issue. They can't duplicate the issue so they are asking me to come by and pick up my car again.

The only thing they found was a loose alternator belt. I told him that was probably due to the service techs there not tightening it after they did an alternator swap on my car.

A lil fustrated. Gonna pick up my car either tonight or tomorrow. Im gonna try to duplicate it. If I duplicate it Mazda North America is going to get chewed out. I WIll yell LEMON LAW out loud to them until they hear me. For their sake the stalling issue better be gone.

called Mazda NAO and explained my story. Explain i either want the car fixed replaced or bought back. Explained I have explained exactly to wayne how and when the stalling happens detail by detail. explained to Mazda that this is my 3rd time there for the same issue and that if it can not be fixed that i want to claim Lemon Law under NJ Law.

The rep is gonna look into my account search for my letter and take it from there and then talk with Wayne to get more info.

FUN STUFF let the games begin.

OK GUYS UPDATE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I picked up my car today.

According to mazda NA I am currently not covered under NJ Lemon Law. The dealer needs to recreate the problem 3 times. So far they have two times. This time around they didn't.

They found that the alternator belt was loose. It was tightened. I also got new spark plugs out of it.

So here is a rund down as to what was done so far.

1st time alternator (obviously leading to the 3rd visit fix)
2nd MAS mas air sensor changed
3rd time alternaotr belt tightening and spark plugs.

Compression is fine. Fuel delivery is fine. Vacum is fine. So far
electric" seems to be fine.

According to mazda NA if the dealer cant recreate the problem they can't do anything and give me back the car. Basically in a nutt shell I have 5 years and 3 months (my finance term left) of return visits and attempts until Mazda can recreate trusty # 3 of the issue. then im covered by NJ Lemon Law. They if they cant fix it technically they are supposed to issue me a new replacement vehicle or buy back my 8.

I basically just wnat my car fixed. I love my 8 and would like to keep it for many years to come. I really hope I don't go the full term of my financing and the problem isnt recreated by mazda and never gets fixed.

If thats the case I would just have to wait for capital to build into the car and trade it and unfortunately at that point leave the 8 community because then i wouldnt trust buying another new 8.

So lets all hold hands meditate pray and wish that this alternator belt tightening and spark plug solution fixes all my issues and i can continue polluting the earth w/a rotary for many more years to come.

Thanks chris for going w/me to the dealer and not letting me loose my cool. As always the techs there are great and I trust them and they try to work with me. Unfortuantely im bound to policies and laws that govern what can be done at the moment. I get it though, i understand the position Mazda and Wayne Mazda is in. They obviously have to recreate the problem to continue to explore ways to fix my car I can appreciate that. i just would wish that Mazda NA would do much more to keep me happy and basically in a nutt shell tell me "hey dude sorry you are **** out o luck until we can recreate the problem". So what i plan to do for now on if it happens im calling wayne and mazda NA to document another stall and call road side assistance from theis point forward no matter where i am and let them tow it at their cost (yes im going to make this expensive for them) and let them give me a loaner car at theirr cost (again im gonna make this expensive for them) until they can find the absolute solution that fixes my 8, or under the lemon law replace my 8 or buy back my 8 at full cost.

I guess thats it anythign you want to add Chris?

i still think its temp related cuz your water temp was between 210-220 the whole time the car was being driven.....oil temp was fine in the 180 range but the water did not cool down.....that and the rediculously high intake temps you had when alzors datalogged it didnt seem right either.....the car just runs too damn hot and there is no reason for it
