Fatmat / Dynamat install
Hey guys, I can't wait to actually get up north and meet some of you.... but in the meantime...
I bought a roll of fatmat for some sound insulation and for a later subwoofer install. I still have my craptastic factory potenzas on the car, so the road noise is bad, and the door rattles are getting under my skin.
Anyway, does anyone have any advice on how to install this stuff? I saw some pics on the forum of completed trunks that are just covered! But I really think that looks like overkill. I'm told a little bit of this stuff goes a long way, but do you need 100% coverage?
I'm thinking of doing the trunk floor, deck lid, and driver and passenger front doors to start.
I welcome any advice you guys have!

Covering the entire surface would be most effective, but only doing part will also work.
One of the main purposes of Dynomat is to stop the resonation of sound waves off or through the metal panels of the doors, floors, and trunk lid. Not every surface has to be covered as it works similar to if you held you hand on the panel; it stops the vibrating. It all depends on how much noise you're putting through your system. The louder you are, the more you'll need.
In one car I had, I covered everything- every tiny surface in the rear of the car and doors. I had to, though. I had two 15's pushed by a few thousand watts of power in a little hatchback Eclipse. I could get out of the car with the music on and watch the glass on the hatch flex outwards when the bass hit.
......that's probably why you'll always hear me say "What?, Huh?"

Needless to say, I'm not into that much sound anymore. That hobby died with my teen years.

I thought I was going to be able to use the money I was supposed to get from selling back my textbooks, but the bookstore wanted to give me $70 for them. I spent close to $400 at the beginning of the semester for them. I'm not about to get the shaft from the bookstore so they can turn around and sell them again for three times the price they paid me for them.

If you need to sell the intake to someone else, I understand. In a couple of weeks things should look upwards for me. If you still have it then, I'll take it.
Gosh I hate being poor.....Then again, if I didn't have the RX8 I wouldn't be. I'll never get rid of it, though. Like Charlton Heston said "....from my cold, dead hands....."

Well...the Shinka's aren't made anymore so you have to go used. If you are going to go turbo you may even want to go older as you are going to void most of your warranty anyways. If you want to destroy everything else on the road you want to buy something other than an RX8. There are probably a handful of RX8s that can do that and they have all had engine swaps done. As for the different types, I remember them to be...
Base :: BORING
Touring :: Base model plus HID's, Traction Control, Bose Radio, Sunroof
Shinka :: Touring plus pretty interior
Grand Touring :: Touring plus Leather Interior, Heated Seats, Keyfob entry

The RX8 is a road track car, hands down. I can vouch for this personally. Straight out of the box this car handles incredibly well and better than a lot of higher dollar sports cars out there.
However, it's drawback is power....at least when compared to Evo's, STi's, S2000, etc. Think about it, though: It's a 1.3L putting out 238hp. Not many piston engines can claim that.
Turbo kits are about the only way to get a significant increase in power for the RX8. Caution is empahsized to people new to the rotary engine when they speak about getting a turbo for their 8. It's not nearly the same ballgame as it is with a Civic or similar. Much fine tuning is needed for it to be effective, reliable, and worth your money.
As far as motor swaps, the three rotor 20B is the wet dream of most hardcore RX8 power enthusiasts. It's a HUGE investment, though, and requires a lot of modifications. I'm going to do this myself.......a very long time from now......when I'm not so broke.
The best advice I can give is to search the forum. We have a huge wealth of info available, and it will keep you busy for hours. (Which I'm sure you probably don't have over there)
BTW, thanks for your service in the Sandbox. If my situation was a little different, I'd probably be sitting right next to you out there.

neolowrider: I believe all the models (except the sport) had Sport Tuned suspension... but don't quote me on that. My car is the Grand Touring and it has the Sport Tuned suspension and larger front brakes.
As far as HP... Mazda has done a fine job at getting everything they could out of this engine while staying within regulations. Forced induction is the only way to see "serious" HP gains on this car, but a midpipe, ignition, and the Cobb AccessPort can give you a nice boost.
You might have heard people talk about an engine swap with a 20B motor (which is a 3-rotor design). Not many people here have this because it usually cost over $20,000 to upgrade everything in preparation, and its not street legal.
Hope this helps.

You could also try and put a 2JZ engine in it like some other person on the forum. The engine is pretty well maxed out straight from the factory. You can add all kinds of stuff to the car...but the Renesis just won't give you the return that I think you are expecting. If you plan on draggin the car you will be disappointed with the 1 - 1.5 sec gain that are reported with the turbo.

Hopefully they won't run out of loaner helmets i found out that the helmet i purchased very cheaply $30 (not to disappointed) probably won't work. Otherwise if they do i'm just going to end up watching you all which would be very disappointing.
Registration starts @ 8:30 correct?

I'm not sure how much they'll run if it rains. The last forecast I saw is reporting " a few showers" for Sunday; whatever the hell that means.
Is the helmet that you bought SNELL rated? I'm guessing it's not for $30. It must be SNELL rated for you to participate. If you get there early enough you should be able to grab one of the loaners.
BTW, nobody better try to use my number.

I'm lucky number 13. (It would have been 1.3, but I don't think they allow that)

Gopherage, if you're planning on running Sunday (you should) you'll need to pick up some of that painters tape, the blue tape, to make a number on your car.
So Tony, I and Gopherage are planning on running. Anybody else?

Current Sunday forecast is 40% chance of rain all day. As long as it doesn't rain I will show up and point and laugh. I don't know why they would let yall run in the rain...you would think that there would be a little madness going on. Oh wait...this Sunday was supposed to be that car show in Boardman. I will have to see what the rest of the guys are doing. Someone had asked me about rolling out there for that.

btw...I decided with the chance of rain the drive wasn't worth it. So I shall probably see you guys at Lakeland.
