camshafts drive the valves of a piston engine. rotaries have no valves.
if i am not mistaken, the eccentric shaft connects to the flywheel like a crankshaft would. thus making them more similar. so, yes DB, in this case, wikipedia is more right than wrong.

I don't care what Wiki says. An eccentric shaft is closer to a camshaft then a crankshaft, appearance and function wise.....
A camshaft has eccentric lobes on it.... a crankshaft does not....

Crankshafts move the rods that are connected to the pistons. Rotaries have no pistons or rods.
And if I'm not mistaken by the picture I just posted, the eccentric shaft has eccentric lobes on it, much like a camshaft, thus making it more similar. So in this case, wiki is wrong.

I like the second option more. I'm trying to figure out if I have a boost leak or my turbo is supposed to whine like a banshee. I should get some video of that..

I don't want to be that guy, but did you buy that turbo second hand?
If so....... did you check the shaft play in the turbo? 6-8 times out of 10 the reason a turbo is screaming is because the bearings are ****. If it is howling like you say it is then I would suspect the bearings are shot on it. Obviously this is just me speculating over the internet, and I would want to hear it first hand, but if it sounds like a twin screw supercharger then I would be extremely cautious of running it hard.
Now, I'm not trying to sound like a dick here, so don't take it that way, but we had a guy on a local forum with an MS3 that didn't listen to me no matter how much I told him he was wrong, and he ended up popping his motor on his MS3. I've been dicking with boosted cars for well over 10 year now and now have a decent amount of know how with how this **** works. If you need someone to come out and lend a hand then by all means let me know. I'll be glad to help you get this thing running proper. It very well could be something as simple as an oil line that isn't giving enough flow to the turbo.

More importantly, this only occurs under heavier throttle above 8psi or so. I'm just not flooring it for the time being.

i watched both videos half dozen times each and couldnt discern anything that sounded bad or wrong. Though i do not make any claims to be a "turbo expert". i thought it sounded fine.
Brian (tiresmoker) would be the better judge i think.

You're gonna be at the boneyard on Friday right? If so I want to get a better listen at it then.
It sounded like there was a little something extra instead of just your "normal" turbo whistle. It was hard to tell though in the video, just because cameras obviously don't pick up all the sound that an ear would be able to hear.
I have a few more things to add to this but I gotta run out in the shop real quick. When I get back I'll elaborate.

ok lets see here. Essentially your turbo will be a lower pitch whistle upon spool up. Once it is spooled the pitch changes and it gets higher, that being said.....
One of the first things I would check is your oil feed line. Make sure there isn't a restriction (blockage in the line, kink in the line, etc..) Also make sure the little screen at the end of the line at the fitting on the turbo is clean (if there even is a screen) Basically when a turbo starts to lose oil pressure the bearing will heat up and howl like a sonofabitch.
Second. Make sure you don't have an exhaust leak at the downpipe to turbo exhaust housing. If you have one that will definately increase the turbo noise, since you are basically dumping exhaust right at the turbo and not routing it properly.
Third. Check all your piping. Make sure nothing has come loose. Are you using t-bolt clamps or regular hose clamps? Do the pipes have bead rolled ends on them? This is just good measure to do considering that some stuff will come loose typically after the first run or two (engine movement, stuff settling and adjusting itself...)
I almost wouldn't suspect a leak (air wise) unless you notice boost falling off or vacuum to be off/fluctuating.
Like I said, without being able to get a clear sample of what it sounds like (basically in person) I couldn't tell you if it is no big deal or if it is something to worry about. I'll take a good listen on friday. If I can think of anything else I'll be sure to post up.
