Catch cans are easy to install.
If you can tighten a hose clamp, you can install a catch can
Only difficult part is finding a good place to mount the can.

I checked at Montrose (westside mazda) since we get a discount.. They seemed to be fairly decent prices for the Mazdaspeed body kit (bumpers, skirts, and wing). I'd call there and mention that you're from the cleveland6club or rx8club and see what they can offer.

What is the benefit of putting a breather filter on the catch can instead of running it back to the intake? Am I wrong for thinking that running it back to the intake could cause similar problems if the catch can overfills?

There's no benefit to putting the breather on over running it to the intake. If your can fills up obviously then there's no place left to go. Breather's are just generally a cleaner option since it's one less hose.

If you can run it to your aux. port then just run it there. Then you get the best of both worlds.

OK guys. I'm looking for my next set of tires. USE: Autocross and Track Days.

I've found I don't like the stock tires for this. I want something a little stickier.

I've searched but can't find a qualitative list. Lot's of commentary but the following is the best I can find:

Here is a summary of times from worst to first.
Any comments. I need to stay with tires that go on the stock size wheels. I don't want to go to 17s or 19s.

Doc, I have experience with 3 of the 6 of those tires....


Azenis RT 615's: I've run these on the Focus for a few years now. Gone through multiple sets. Use ranges from daily driving to autocross to roadcourses. I really enjoy this tire. Although, this tire sucks in the rain once treadwear is at 40% ish

Direzza Z1 Star Specs: Great tire. Currently using these at autocross. The car seems to do rather will with these on them.

RE-01R: No way are these "stickier" then the Direzzas. They are comperable, but just marginally lower on the list. Still a good tire though

Doc - I'd probably go with the RE-01Rs if money isn't an object. Falken's get mixed reviews on the track tho they'd be my choice for autocrossing since they heat up quick. That's generally bad on the track.

Well, I haven't had a chance to run the Azenis 615's at a track day, but I have used them at a few autocrosses. I definitely like them and they stick really well. I do agree with Brian though, they are very slick in the rain. I have Brian's wheels with the azenis on them, pretty much worn down completely... they are quite a fight in the rain. Even with tread, they weren't great in the rain. Sorry, don't have too much experience with the others Doc..

Interesting responses. We seem to be sticking with the names on the list I showed and somewhat in the order I showed.

It would be nice to be able to find someone who's driven them all.

Tiresmoker and Machiavelli are both riding the Dirrezza's . Brian any probs with those on the track?

Seems people are rating the RE-01Rs a little higher. Not sure it makes much diff. I think Tom said the Dirrezzas were significantly Cheaper than the Bridgestones.

I'm really looking for tires dedicated to the track and autocross type events (Wilson Circuit). Not for daily drivers. The stock tires are OK for that.

FWIW I think those two activities have completely different requirements for tires. I'd take the Falkens in a heartbeat for autocross but you're gonna burn through them quick on a track and the reports of them getting too slick from turn to turn would scare me off.

The RE-01Rs seem to be decent at both which is why I'd recommend them.

I haven't taken the Direzzas to the track, but I will say that autocrossing on them is fantastic. They do get a little hot, but that's basically because Jamie co-drives my car and 12+ runs back to back with little time to cool down. I will say that they are better then the 615's

For the record I have never had an issue with the 615's in track situations and them getting slippery and greasy. I've run them at Nelsons and BeaveRun, as well as a **** ton of autocrosses.

I daily drive on the RE-01R's and when I had to break in the Direzzas I daily drove on them as well. I can say for certain that the Direzzas are better then the 01R's. Jamie (my co-driver) will agree with this statement as his last set of tires were the 01R's and he autocrossed those.

Oh just thinking of it, I saw two 8's today ... A red on on 80E by mile 204ish (Ravenna/warren area); and a yellow on 271S coming from 480E. Anyone on here perhaps?

Yea that was me! Were you heading the same way? Hope I wasnt driving too slow, I normally stick to around 73 at that part of the highway since its so close to the patrol building

When I bought mine the Dirrezza's were running about $55/per cheaper than the RE-11's on Tire Rack. They were offering rebates on both. I was actually leaning toward the RE-11's, but the more homework I did the more I came to the conclusion that they were pretty comparable, with the Dirrezzas being perhaps the slightly better of the two in the wet and as an occassional street tire. I know little or nothing about autocross but as you know, Mark, I was extremely happy with the way the Dirrezza's performed at BeaveRun. They seem much stickier than the Michelin Pilot MXX3's I had on my M3.

Lol, no. I was heading to downtown from Youngstown.. coming back from Tiresmoker's (brian's) house. Honestly couldn't tell if you were slow or not haha. I was the little black focus with bright HID's .. if you even were paying attention lol
