Doesn't mean something is actually wrong with your car.
I'm just really skeptical right now because if you had an ignition, intake, fuel, or compression issue, I should have felt something while doing all those WOT runs.
But your car felt pretty good.
We even checked the SSV and VDI valve, the coils, plug wires, even the plugs themselves (which looked cleaner than any plug I've seen on an 8).
I looked-over your intake setup and cleaned your MAF.
Even though I couldn't find anything during the WOT runs, we still went through a ton of components and checked them and still couldn't find anything.
Yes your car sounded shitty, but that could just be the sound of those aftermarket components.
I heard nothing wrong with the engine nor felt anything during the WOT runs.
Since you are really fixated on sound... but the stock intake back on and see what happens.

So your problem is with the sound/tone of your exhaust?

At least having the stock intake will allow us to hear the car better.
That K&N was pretty loud and actually annoying making it difficult to pin-point sounds through-out the car.
If you can get a compression test for free, it would be nice to do.
That way you know everything is running as it should.
Or wait until next year... I think that's when I'll be purchasing my own compression tester.

no it never did with the midpipe which is why when they said my cat was plugged and no dealer would do it under warranty i figured that was the problem. lol maybe bedford mazda didnt change it actually and just charged 300 dollars in labor for nothing. since thats all i paid for since it was "under warranty" haha

TJ...do you know how long that car sat at the dealer before you bought it?
Jon...is it possible that he has a bad fuel injector? Im just thinking that if the "problem" (Sorry TJ) gets fixed by removing the cat it could be because of the lean code that gets thrown and the compensation involved. Or would the first injector throw a too rich code at that point because it is outside some predetermined bounds?

I doubt it.
You would get a misfire, hesitations, and depending on the injector, experience rough idles.
The O2 sensor would read the unburned oxygen as lean and (should) throw a code.
When I did a few WOT runs, I didn't experience any signs of a bad injector.
My AP didn't display any pending codes (though I could have monitored the STFT if the fuel system was in question).
Also, you usually get black smoke from the exhaust because the PCM was trying to compensate by adding more fuel.

Well...remember before all this fun started that Im pretty sure it was TJ that had blue smoke out his exhaust. With a brand new cat maybe the smoke is just getting caught up in the cat.
So this morning I accelerated quickly to 45 and shifted into 4th on a pretty weak "hill" and went WOT and only got to 48 by the top, 250 - 500'. The car bogged down pretty bad, but you could tell it was trying.

I get people confused.
When I drove TJ's car, it was a pretty good incline (hard to tell from the map below).
WOT it didn't even gain acceleration.
I took my car out to the same hill last night and did a couple passes in 4th gear.
One with the base map and one with the tune.
I was able to accelerate fairly easily with both.
I attempted to perform some logs, but when I cleared my logs (in case there were older logs still in there), it defaulted all my settings and didn't measure everything I suggested it to record.
So I got some useless data that didn't tell me much.

Yeah... with TJ's car I maintained a speed of roughly 43mph up that hill.
Last night I was doing over 60mph and had to slow down (I was almost right in front of St. Thomas Hospital).
I'm really starting to think his car is fine.
The mid-pipe felt like it improved the car because you really do notice an acceleration difference with a mid-pipe (going back to a cat does feel like you "lost power")
And the noise is probably just from the aftermarket components (intake and/or cat-back).

Ran into a couple 8's over the weekend. Thurs I passed a Titanium Gray 8 on Bishop road around 630PM...they actually waved...YIPPEE! Fri I passed a red 8 driven by what looked like a hot blonde on Monticello around 7 PM.

sorry john, but i do have the money to get it right now, i was actually looking into buying doc's Accessport off him if he still was willing to sell it. the problem with the midpipe was now that my parents know the difference in sound, if i put one on again after they said not too idk how happy they'd be. i still would like one of you (besides Jon) to drive it on the 11th if were going to that. because id like to know what John meant when he said his car bogged down real good. could be what mine does, but it'd make me feel better knowin it was. except i'd once again feel dumb for this being in my head.

If you just want to stop up at my house on your way to the Headlands or sometime this week TJ I've got a hill that we can play on for a little bit before the cops come.
