I suggest PMing Charles R Hill for pricing and recommendations if you plan on aftermarket.
I dealt with him when I purchased my clutch and flywheel.

If you want to stay stock (and cheaper), I should have my used OEM clutch laying around along with a new release and pilot bearing.

Srsly though, if you guys are curious about some of this stuff let me know. I'll try and schedule the engine swap around a weekend that isn't a race and people can come down and watch/lend a hand if they wanted. Granted, it's not an RX-8, but hell, it's a car and it's all the same basic principle.

At work now for over-time and got bored, so I looked through the electrical circuit for the cooling fans.
I still think Steve is just acting paranoid () but I wanted to find a way to turn both fans on AND at high speed (since they operate at two speeds depending on temps).
So here is what I found:


We see three relays that are used together to control operation and speed.
The A/C also plays a factor with the refrigerant pressure switch, but we won't get into that now.
At engine coolant temps 208F or less, nothing is enabled.
At engine coolant temps 208F or more, both fans turn on at low speed and stay on until the temps fall to 201F or less.
At engine coolant temps 213F or more, both fans are on at high speed and stay on until the temps fall to 209F or less.

So by looking at the above circuit, if we simply jump a wire between relay1 and relay2's signal input from the PCM, both fans will be energized at high speed.
Obviously, the input signal to relay2 would need to be disconnected so we don't have two sources energizing the same relay.

Two downsides to this...
1) Having both fans on at high speed will draw more current.
Not sure how this can impact your idle since the alternator isn't generating as much current at idle and the fans are running full speed.
2) Both fans will be running full speed until the temps lower to 201F, so this will make it louder.
Your temps are going to drop quicker with both fans on high and the addition of the upgraded water pump and thermostat.
But it'll be loud until the temps reach 201.

Other than that, a simple wire *should* be all that's needed to make this work.
If you didn't want the two fans on at full speed all the time (or until the temps dropped to 201F), you can also keep the circuit the way it is and wire a toggle switch to the dash so you can energize the 2nd relay.
This way, you let the PCM control when the fans turn on (low speed) and you control when the fan's high speed it turned on.
Obviously.. you'll need to remember to turn it on but its something you can do at the track before you even start to ensure they run at high the entire time.
Then once its cooled down enough (to your satisfaction) you can turn off the high speed and let the PCM control the low speed from there.

A few feet of wire and a toggle switch is much cheaper than the aftermarket cooling kits and this way YOU control when they come on and how.
Just a thought...

Not a far drive... we've gone farther for installs
John lives in Willoughby and offered to ask a friend to borrow his lift (which would be easier).
What components are you looking at replacing?
I have:
1) Used Clutch Disk
2) Used Pressure Plate
3) New Release Bearing
4) New Pilot Bearing
5) Used Flywheel

Depending on if there is any damage, you may not need to replace the clutch or flywheel.
Bearings are known to go bad (especially the release bearing) so that might be the only thing wrong.
Hard to tell until we get in there.

It would be easiest to pay you via paypal or something, that way i dont have to go to the bank and take out cash or some **** and then find a way to deliver it if i didn't grab enough


BTW, im off monday and saturday, whichever works best for you guys... Being that monday is tomorrow it probably would be difficult but if it could be done i would highly appreciate =)

Few complications with doing it tomorrow...
If you aren't going to wait for a lift, we need 4 large jack stands that can raise the car AT LEAST 20".
Then we need a trans-jack. We had four people trying to hold the tranny up to align it, then decided to put the trans-jack back on because it wasn't fun holding it.
A pilot bearing puller/slide hammer. Or you can use grease or wet paper with a socket to remove bearing (difficult to describe).
Will need about 6 hours to complete. If we worked non-stop and everything goes well, we can probably do it in 4 hours.

I don't have 4 jack stands that'll stretch at least 20", I don't have a trans-jack, and I don't have a bearing puller (which you can probably borrow form Autozone or use the method I mentioned above with wet paper and a socket).
Another issue... I work 3rd shift hours (so I sleep during the day) and we really need to start this in the morning in case we run into problems. AND I work next Saturday night/Sunday morning.

If we had EVERYTHING needed to do this right away, I would consider doing it tomorrow.
But I would need to borrow large jack stands and the trans-jack from another friend.

Make sure he has a trans-jack that'll reach that high too.
I would hate to have people holding that thing up.
Having a lift will help speed up the process, but having more hands will too.

They need to go up at least 20" or the transmission can't come out from under the car once its lowered.

I asked about a transmission jack but he goes "**** it just do it by hand that transmission weighs nothing."
