I've always used needle nose pliers on the rears.
Some people around here (the whole forum) like to argue with everything so its not worth bring it.
I've heard people bitch about using the pliers on the rears, people bitch about the c-clamp on the fronts, people bitch about drilling tiny holes in the tail light (that are very hard to see) to eliminate condensation...
I can go on, but you see why some methods aren't forced more than others.
And its usually the people with no "back-yard mechanics" skills that argue.

Well...........................

The OMP copper gasket didn't come in today. THANK GOD. I saved $6. lulz?

Good news: I found the oil leak..

Bad news: there is more than one leak.

Badder news: It's the engine and the OMP

Even badder than badder news: It's the main seal at the e-shaft

Gooder news: From my understanding, Mazda won't crack a rotary unless there is a master tech that was trained onthe rotary in Japan (aka rice land)

Even moar gooder news: if this is the case, new engine for Brian.

Basically after not getting the gasket I decided to do a dye test on the oil to see where it was definitely leaking from. After 8 start and stop cycles I shut the car down because the garage smelled terrible..... I shut the lights off and shined the UV light all over the engine. Oil is leaking out of the OMP (which has visible cracks in it) as well as the e-shaft seal. And when I say leaking, I mean I have a puddle underneath the car the size of a dollar bill.

DAMN YOU STEVE AND YOUR CURSE!!

Seriously though, the car is going to be towed to Montrose after I alert Sandy of what I found.

That all being said, I believe I may be the first in the area to get a new renny.

Also along those lines... If I don't get a rental I won't be able to help with the flywheel/clutch install that I prematurely promised. I'll be dropping the engine that I have sittin on the stand in my focus so I have a car to drive until my baby is fixed.

I'm gonna go drink a beer now and mourn the loss of my engine.

Sorry bout not posting the pics yet, i used my ex girlfriends camera to take the pics and i cant find my memory card reader.. (damn sony)

On other notes, I should be getting my brother in laws impact to take that flywheel off friday night so we can put everything back together on saturday morning if thats cool with you guys, We can do another "show up as early as you like" however it probably wont even get started until i have someone that knows how to align/calibrate all the stuff that needs to go in (hooray learning day)

For those of you that didn't come, this saturday (pending scheduling) would be a good learning day to see how everything goes back together, shouldn't take terribly long either, the hard work will already be done.

Suggestions for transmission fluids are open (im completely stock)

and how much do you want for parts jon? ill get some cash for you.

BTW, thanks again for all your help guys, especially jon316g and vyndictive =)

Thanks doc for stopping in and putting a hold on all the work! (and driving a truck when you own *2* RX8s) Nice meeting you doug regardless that you seem to be afraid of dirt, however i think it is justified judging on the size of the dust bunnies jumping outa my transmission =P

Steve drives your car... you get a new engine... what curse?

I just hope everything goes smoothly with your warranty stuff and there isn't any funny business. If you don't get a loaner and need wheels, you can always borrow the Bronco for a few days. Its a thirsty bitch though!

I'll try to make it back up this weekend to help put your car back together, Tim. But I can't make any promises. Let us know how the air tools work friday night.

I'm not 100% sure on the policy, but in order to get that seal out they are going to have to take some heavy **** apart , and from the looks of it, it could be labor intensive. I "think" you have to be a master rotary tech (like actually trained in Japan) in order to crack these bitches open. I could be wrong though.

I may or may not get a new engine, but considering the seal went I'd be inclined to check the compression for ***** and giggles. Plus, if that seal went, what else let go in order to cause that seal to leak, something had to warp/crack/break, maybe...

Either way, I'll keep you guys posted as I go through the paces. I'm going to call Sandy later today to let her know whats up, and probably take a vacation day tomorrow to get the car up to Montrose.

Nope. Daily driver and autox pads. I used them on the track a couple times and they work but they're not meant to be true competitive pads - just a good compromise between performance and regular use. I used HPS pads before I switched to ceramic and didn't notice a difference. HPS and ceramic are just a little grippier than OEM. HPS dusted just as bad as OEM and the ceramics barely dust at all and when they do it comes right off with a tire brush.

What kind of posi-quiet pads did you have? I put the ceramic ones on my GFs Hyundai and they seem to work pretty well. I wouldn't trust those on a track with the temps our brakes can get up to but for DDs they seemed fine. Read that the semi-metallic ones are at least as dusty as HPS.

I can't remember who took the pics, (it was either my buddy Devon, or John) but you wanna talk about brake temps...

My rotors were blue after the event on sunday.

Like deep navy blue. hot **** right there.

The Posi quiets were semi metallic and somewhat dusty... No where even close to say Brian's car though.

I was just curious because they really feel about the same or worse than the Posi Quiets... but I haven't pushed them yet... its just from D.D. feel.

Brian- Are we still on for this Saturday to work on Tim's flywheel?
I really can't do anything further without a good impact wrench and good size tank.

Well unless Tim knows someone who can tack weld the gear ring onto the flywheel or has access to a good enough impact wrench, he might be **** out of luck for Saturday.
And if we can't get it done this weekend, I'll probably have to take the jack stands and trans-jack away which would make things harder for him.

Jon: I saw that Tim had posted he was going to get his brother in laws impact to get the flywheel bolt off

Tim: This is very important. IF you don't get that bolt off/out then let us know ASAP. I got a truck for a rental vehicle while the RX-8 is in the shop and I can run my air tank and impact up to get that sucker off, but I will need to know tonight so that I can plan to leave early in the moring tomorrow.

I think it is suppose to rain on and off on Saturday and Sunday, so I may be screwed for dropping that engine in the ST.I may end up putting the car in the garage though and tearing at in there, but it will be a pain in the butt to get it over there.

So Tim be sure to let me know if you can't get that bolt out. I don't ahve a problem running up there for a few hours in the morning to take care of that for you but like I said, I'll need to know tonight so I can load eveything up and get at your house in the a.m...

PS, my car looked lonely sad on the lift when I left the dealer yesterday. I almost wanted to cry

Brian- I really would appreciate your help taking that lock nut off if Tim can't.
I just don't have the required tools for this. Thanks for offering to help

Tim- Please let the man know ASAP because that really is your best option unless you want to be without a car for another week.

Quasi update on the car.....

They can't find the oil leak.. The tech knows there is/was a leak on the car due to the oil everywhere underneath it, but they can't reproduce it...

There's a puddle of oil in my garage that says otherwise, as well as the oil that was coming out of the e-shaft seal...

Knowing my luck it's not going to leak again untill I get the damn car back. If it wasn't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.... ugh

John: I'll let you know if I need a hand on Sunday.

Jon: Just be sure he either gets ahold of you, or you know for sure somehow. If needed, feel free to call me if you get an answer, as I probably won't be on the forum once I leave work because I'll be at home geting **** ready to put the engine in the ST.
