Thanks to Cascade Mazda I now have oil in my accordion tube. (Overfilled during last oil change) And their refusal to give me a catch can even under warranty did not help prevent it. My question is what to do next. I think i'm going to call up Cascade and see what they plan on doing about it. Probably nothing > They'll probably just say i overfilled even though i haven't even put any oil in since they did the change. I guess is there a weekend where you guys are free to supervise me taking it apart and cleaning everything out?

Let me see if I get this right...

1) Remove everything from the airbox back to the Lower intake manifold.
2) Clean tubes with seafoam and rag.
3) Clean MAF with contact cleaner and clean rag.
4) Check air filter for oil, if found, replace.
5) Reassemble everything.

Sounds like you're volunteering.

No, that pretty much sums it up...

Oil came in through the accordian tube and in most cases gets sucked back...
The one step you omitted was to clean the throttle body... which I guess could be included in cleaning the tubes.

If you remove the upper intake (black plastic) and there is very little oil in there, I wouldn't worry too much about your SSV. You can look down and inspect the condition of it.

As for a weekend to crack it open... I'd buy the catch can supplies first and do that install at the same time... easy to remove if you need warranty work.

Rumor has it someone wrote a handy DIY...

Oh yea...and btw...the TSB is not to install a catch can but is to install a rubber line that goes from the overfill to the maintenance ports.

That's about right (with Steve's recommendation of cleaning the TB), but #3 is a little incorrect.
You don't want to use a rag because you shouldn't touch the resistor wires at all.
They are two axial components and the leads are fragile.
So just spray a good amount of contact cleaner right at the wires and let air dry, it evaporates quickly.

And if you have the UIM off, might as well spray Seafoam on the SSV and cycle it a few times just to be safe.

Thanks guys for responding so quickly, it's why it's nice to have the support of our local group on the forum.

Devil -> that must explain why they looked at me like i was stupid when i asked about a catch can.

Guess i'll be ordering a catch can soon and i'll clean out the whole system once i get that.

No oil in the air filter so i don't need to replace that. Surprising because it seemed like there was a lot of oil in the tube leading to the filter.

I guess the morale of the story is change my own oil so that I make sure the right amount is put in. (Although i overfilled the first time I ever did my own oil without getting any in the tube)

John, you were right, you'll want to clean the maf too. Typically the air filter is okay, but it doesn't hurt anything to check.

Josh, no problem. I may be free sunday if you'd like some unskilled help.

That would be much appreciated Steve. Hopefully we will just get the black plastic upper intake off and discover that no oil made it that far.

I'll give you a call this weekend.

However, you can buy a decent Miata for 4k... I love the 8, but a supercharger just doesn't seem like good value. I'm sure I've put over 4k into my car into mods that do much less, but that was spread out over a few years.

I bet its a sweet kit though. . .

Just max out the credit cards, it'll totally be worth it. You can live on ramen for at least 3 months with no lifelong side affects. When is the next time one will come up for sale like this? No one ever gets rid of the supercharger. You'll be all the rage, you'll get that satifying supercharger wine everytime you drive it. Your Mazdamaniac tuning will finally have a clear purpose!

muahaha. . .

Thanks for the offer to help me out Jon, should we wait to do this until i have a catch can ordered though? Or just go ahead and clean it up this weekend and get a catch can ordered sometime soon?

Steve I actually made it back from Canton last time i was down there in 40 minutes. I think i was lucky though as far as traffic. Plus I live on the border of Streetsboro and Hudson so it might even be less than 10 minutes to Jon's place.

Stig if this ends up happening your more than welcome to join. That is if your family event doesn't happen or you get out early. I don't think we have met in person yet?

As long as the oil level is back down to where it should be, there shouldn't be a problem with cleaning the intake area now before the catch can.
And I live off of Frost Rd right by I480... so you're probably really close to me.

Haha ya I live on a street right off of Middleton I don't think that we could get much closer than that while still being in the two different cities.

And yes the oil level is back to normal. It is right at the top of the full line. I guess I finally burned enough out of it or sucked enough into the intake.

I think I have your number saved somewhere on my computer in that file that Doc sent to everyone in the local area. If you need my number just say so and i'll send it to you via private message.

I just realized the Cavs play Sunday at 3PM.
Since this shouldn't take too long, we can tear apart Josh's intake, clean it up, and anyone who wants to come back to my place and watch the Cavs game is more than welcomed to.
I can have beer ready to drink (or juices for John ).
