Got the head unit torn apart.
None of the ICs are labeled as programmed components, but there is a QFP that has two white dots.
Using paint pens are common to identify a process was performed such as testing or flashing.
Its possible this QFP is the programmed component and would be the most difficult to remove and reinstall.
I could remove it in under 1 minute, but I would have to solder every lead, one at a time, to ensure a good joint.
I'll try to PM that guy who was doing it and see if he'll share any information... or at least tell me if that is the PROM.

wait a second.... maybe someone that had it done could step up to the plate and take some pictures of the board. We might be able to tell which one was messed with.

I doubt anyone would be willing to remove their HU and tear it apart like this just to take pics.
But yes... you can tell by looking at the solder joints if it was done by machine or hand.
Looking at the bottom-side of the board I found many 0402 caps that were skewed... many were almost (if not at) the 50% tolerance off the pad.
Workmanship Standards was not important to the operator of this build.

Congratulations to Steve... whose Catch-Can DIY made it to another website:
http://www.rx8blog.com/category/rx8-tutorials/
Of course the "RX-8 Diagnostic Outputs" DIY on that page (which I created) is credited to someone else... bastards!

im sitting here thinking (dangerous as that may be) and i wonder if the guys that are doing the radio upgrades simply have some way of obtaining the upgraded chips from mazda or elsewhere. In this case they could just replace whatever chip(s) that need to be and be done with it.

But the guy in the other thread mentioned that its not a chip replacement.
From what it sounds like, he just re-flashes the chip with another image... possibly one that he copied/obtained from another chip.
Though there is no reason why you can't just buy a chip and replace it... you just need to find someone actually selling just the prom.

gotcha, didnt see that. so at this point the best thing to do is to try and find someone who has gotten the upgrade to sneak a peek? (as hard as that may be to find)

Someone would have to disassemble the HU quite a bit, then they need to know what to look for.
I PMed the guy from that thread, but he hasn't responded.

also his last post was 11-16-09 so i have a feeling we wont be hearing from him

Either that or just going to Mazda for service until you are out of the warranty period. You should also make sure you have no aftermarket parts on the car when you drop it off. They will do everything they can to blame those parts for the engine failure.

"Hmmmm you don't have the stock lug nuts, I think that is what caused your engine failure, warranty claim denied!!!"
I track mine on the Mazda website thing, figure they will still try to find some way around it. So now when I do my oil i'm going to video tape the odometer with the oil draining out below. Extreme yes but I don't want to have another dealership overfill my oil again.
