I'll charge up the camera - Super Cat it is still off - and see if I can get a photo down there.

Just went out and car started, ran for maybe 90 seconds, sputtered and quit. Restarted, sputtered. Restarted, revved it for a minute or so, let off the gas and sputtered and quit. Never threw a code.

Was just reading another string https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-trouble-shooting-95/p0335-eccentric-shaft-position-sensor-circuit-problem-car-will-not-idle-194505/
about the eccentric shaft position sensor. Sounds like a good easy place to start before swapping the CAT and going to the stealership.

I have no idea where it is though? Jon? I'm scanning my Service Manuel PDFs now..

OEM coils maybe 2.5 years old. Started pre-mix few months ago when Steve placed the big order. I've been using it 90% of the time when i fill up - 3 or 4 "glugs" for a tank full (maybe 4 ounces-ish). Haven't used it for past two tanks full - keep forgetting to put it in the trunk.

Just seemed like a weird thing to have in the middle of the pipe. Stig...if the pipe is still off the car...can you try and get a pict of that scratch?

2) Yea...don't know nothin about that sensor. I wish we had sat down and went over the donor engine a bit more now. I still couldn't ask intelligent questions though and I know how much asking for a brain dump is impossible.

Stig - How old are the coils? Are they OEM coils? When did you start to premix? How much premix are you using and how often are you using it?

Eccentric shaft position sensor - Before and After - Dirty isn't the word. I cleaned the MAF with denatured alcohol and made sure it was set properly. Did the brake pedal reset. Started, sputtered, died. It did throw the running lean code again though.....that's enough grease monkeying around for today...

Probably 50k miles on the coils?? Replaced them not long after I got the car.

Today's update. Left the battery disconnected all night. Made sure all OEM gutted CAT connections were tight (with gaskets). Checked plugs, didn't look bad; checked all plug connections - tight and snapped on properly.

Started it up - rough for about 2 minutes. Settled into a somewhat of an idol (without me having to hold the gas pedal) for about two minutes. Sputtered and died. This time threw P0171 (was pending before).

It is running poorly until it warms up then stalls and won't restart. I'm thinking coils or fuel (filter or pump)?

Hey DDDrew.

I run studless snow tires in the winter and I think the car handles like a champ. The DSC seems to work well too. I would advise you to budget for snow tires as they are not cheap (especially the 18"). Luckily I found a used set of 17"s with rims in the classified section. They will last many seasons if you just use them from Thanksgiving to Tax Day.

==========

on another note: Any of you VR's been working out at Fitness 19 in Fairlawn? I keep seeing one with aftermarket exhaust, but have not identified the owner. I'm there at the same time as you. (I usually ride my bike).

Prolly should test those and see if they need to be replaced. They will fail with heat. Jon had some way to test them with a multimeter...I have no idea how he did it though.

The meter is only testing the coil windings.
The ignitor is usually the component to fail in a coil and can't be tested with a meter.

Yea. I'm searching the service manual PDFs to see how. I've got a good digital multi-meter I've barely used so if I know what to do I think I can check em. That would be a quick fix if that was the problem.

I think the fuel pump would be a PAIN to do...

DOH! Expensive guess to make but at 50K miles you are going to be replacing them soon anyway.

Man... In my life when it rains, it pours...
So this past weekend my motherboard died on my computer!
I saw it coming when I started losing USB ports, but my dumbass just wished it wouldn't get worse.
Luckily it failed just before the warranty expired (51st week of 2010) so I submitted an RMA with Gigabyte.

Then last night so many machines at work did not want to behave and was giving me problems.
Let just say, I felt like I got my *** kicked by the time 5:30am came around.

So I come home expecting to relax from a shitty night, just to find out my Onkyo receiver doesn't work!
The HDMI "hand shake" has slowly been giving me problems and usually I can switch sources or power cycle the receiver to get the picture back, but not this time!
Onkyo only has a 2 year warranty AND you need a copy of the sales receipt to prove purchase date.... which pissed me off because many companies simply go by the build date.
Needless to say... I couldn't find the receipt.
Reading through various forums I found that the 100uF caps are known to fail.
I removed the HDMI board and plan on taking it to work tonight and find some axial caps rated at 105C instead of the SMD caps on there now that are rated at only 85C.

With all these problems... I'm almost afraid to drive my car!

Wow Jon that is a down pour for sure If anyone can fix em it's you though!

So I pulled an ignition coil this morning and tested it and I think it's bad. Depending on that terminals I check the Ohms on it is either nothing (BAD) or is all over the place (BAD) so I think I'm gonna be dropping some cash for new coils. Any deals out there? One of my student's dad owns Fred Vincent so I'm going to head up there and see if I can get a deal.

Personally if you are going to go the coil route I think it is worth kickin in the extra cash and goin the BHR route. They tend to run behind though and you have an immediate need so I would hit up CRH and see how quickly he could get a set to you.

I know I was just looking at them but I have to get this running in the next 2 days. After doing some more reading in other threads bad coils would cause all the codes I've been getting - catalyst below efficiency, misfires, yadda yadda. And like you pointed out I do have around 50k on them. They just happen to go right after I got the Super Cat.

Yea...but the benefits of the BHR coils far out weigh that of the OEM coils.

I know they do.....but honestly...by this time next year I'll have a new car. When I get that I may just sell the 8 and get a used BMW Z3M. I've always loved those things, they remind me of the MGB I had a long time ago. OR I could sell my current 8 and buy another used one with a LOT less miles on it.

I took the coils up and they confirmed they were shot. So new ones will be in a day or so and I should be running again. I also ordered new exhaust gaskets for both sides of the catalytic converter. Gonna put the Super Cat back on after the new coils and a good SeaFoaming with the gutted OEM Cat as long as I have it on there still - through the service ports this time (DeViLbOi)

I haven't been on here in a long time. So how is everyone in Ohio doing? I finally bought a 2004 RX8 and I have to tell you the car is amazing. I should have made this purchase years ago. I underestimated it's power since I never drove one before. I'm planning on taking it out to a car meet in Parma at Sonic's tonight. When are you guys having a meet?
