Well I thought I was done spending money on my car for this year....
Driving home this morning I turned the radio down and heard rubbing sounds coming from the front driver's side wheel.
I took out this old POS jack that I had in the shed and jacked the car up to spin the tire.
I noticed the rotor had a film of rust/brake dust around it instead of a nice clean surface. There was a small patch on the rotor that was clean.
So it looks like I too will be replacing brake pads this weekend (probably tomorrow). Only thing I fear is the caliper.
For it to rub like that, one side of the caliper is probably seized.
Problem with that is when I compress the pistons, I could tear the o-rings inside if its badly seized (which would then require new calipers).

So with that said... since I've been up since 5pm yesterday, I'm not sure about tonight.
If we come, I'll probably only stay a couple hours.
I'll have to wait until tomorrow to borrow a garage in case the caliper is bad.
I would rather keep my car securely on stands in a garage than in my driveway while I wait for new calipers!

Jon...I'm not in a real rush to have my pads done this weekend anymore as I have decided not to go down to Mohican. So if you want to bring your car down and have everyone look at it at Docs I'm cool with getting bumped. Ryan and I can get together some other time to do the pads on my car.

That is weak . . . now you have me worrying... I'm getting a vibration under firm(er) braking that leads me to believe my rotors may be warped or there is something going on in the brakes.


Anyway, I was planning on bringing chips+dip/salsa and some beers also. . . should I try to bring something else? Pretzels and soda or something for the kiddos? I don't know. I just don't think anyone wants to end up with 30 bags of ruffles tonight.

EDIT:

And we should all bring quarters for some poker/hold'em or something? All proceeds go to ricer style rear wings.

LOL... thanks John, but I'm cool.
It'll give me something to do this weekend.
Plus brake pads are easy to change, its the possibility of a bad caliper that I'm worried about.
This is why I would rather not do it at Doc's, because then my car would be stuck there until I got new calipers.

Really? You think it might be that bad? And are you just getting a new caliper from OnlineMazdaParts or something or getting all new calipers all around? Our calipers are pretty good.

I was thinking worst case.
I'm hoping that the caliper is durable enough and the piston will just compress as it should.
But you never know... it does happen!

Anyone else binging a spouse/girlfriend/significant other? My wife will choke me if she's the only female and I'm spending time in the garage observing the much anticipated changing of the pads.

Well - to go along with the mechanical problems on here... one of our mills went down today. . . so I may miss tonight in order to observe the people that need to fix it... my turn to be "on call" so to speak.

I'm hoping to get out in time to come up there. . . it'll be hit or miss...

Thanks again Ryan, Mark and Billy Bob Frankie Steve. I really appreciate you guys sticking it out and really trying to get things done. I never thought it could possibly take that long to do pads. I owe you guys a ton. But as you can see I did make it home without issue. I'll take my car in in the morning and see why that piston wouldn't compress and let you know.

Ok...took the car up to Monro this morning. They said that sometimes when you are using the brake tool on a new caliper that the rubber gets trapped behind the piston and twists. He stated for newer calipers you should use channel locks to turn the piston as it keeps the rubber out of the way. Once calipers get old then the tool is good to use. *shrug* He said other than that we did it right. As Billy Bob Frankie Steve said last night...the little punks have tricks.

Jon and I had an adventure today that puts your brake job at docs look like a trip to giant eagle.
(Jon def. got more than he was bargaining for with my midpipe replacement project.)

First - all 3 bolts connecting the midpipe to the down-pipe were stuck. . . completely stuck. Fused is a better work. We used nearly every method at out disposal to cut them. Reciprocating saw, oxy-fuel torch, grinder with cutting wheel - pnuenmatic grinder with smaller cutting wheel. The only thing we didn't use was the hand plasma. The thought of using the closest thing to a light-saber on the car didn't appeal to me.

When I was using the torch though. . . I torched something. The whole cabin stinks of burnt sugar now.

We threw in the towel and took it up to a muffler place to have them pull the bolts. Jon and I went to lunch, and an hour later, picked up the car to go install the illegal midpipe.

From there, aside from some bolts not fitting and some nut replacements, it went rather smoothly.

Anyway, many thanks you jon for coming down and helping me out. Or, should I say, him doing 80 percent of the work while I went running for different tools.

Thanks to Doc for hosting our meet last night. . . as for never being allowed back there: too bad, we all now know where you live.

. . . on a side note - took me a total of 6 minutes to replace both bulbs in my clear corners. . . flashing blue parking light remains.

It probably would have been a very good option in more capable hands... but the rule is that plasma cutting is like writing something in stone... very unforgiving for an "oops!"

This is true!
This is now my 7th time removing an RX8's midpipe and I can say without a doubt, yours was the worse.
I think the muffler place was shocked to see each bolt to the header had a different method used to remove (or attempt).
One was cut through with the cutting wheel, one had the bolt head almost removed with a reciprocating saw, and the other was melted by the torch!
This was my first time having to resort to cutting while removing a midpipe, so it was (in a strange way) fun to see what worked and what didn't

In the end.... a take back what I said about gutted midpipes!
This thing sounded surprisingly good... nothing what I expected.
It wasn't an annoying tone while driving and it was hardly noticeable.
And while on the "surprising" subject, I was quite shocked on the height difference between the stock shift **** and his aftermarket.
Never thought I would say this, but its making me think twice!

And yes, his clear corners look MUCH better now!
